Closer to the....live experience, 30 Dec 2003
Having read mixed reviews of this cd I was determined to listen to it with an open mind.
Rush fans, old and new, are used to top quality sound on their cd's regardless of setting - studio or live show, and I think this is exactly the point of this recording.
Having released "Different Stages" relatively recently, to document another live performance so soon, albeit one seen as something of a comeback, would have been pointless. Indeed, just looking at the track listing could put many fans off as they would think they've heard it all before.
But they haven't!
What this cd does is take you right into the live arena like no other concert recording has ever done. The usual attention to detail that produces a recording that could be just a studio "one take" with the crowd dubbed on has been unavoidably dispensed with. Have you ever been to a rock concert where the sound was perfect and the crowd noise comfortably in the background? No, neither have I.
My advice would be to put on your headphones, crank up the volume and imagine yourself in the middle of 40,000 fans going wild for one the best rock bands on the planet. So Geddy's voice does disappear occasionally, but you know all the words so get over it, it's live.
For added effect you could also ask some friends over to bump into you, sing loudly in your ear and overcharge you for a collection of old photographs they call a tour programme.
As Rush are seen in the UK less often than Halley's comet, this will be as close to them as many of us will ever get.
