The Oxford Book of Modern Science Writing
The Oxford Book of Modern Science Writing
by Richard Dawkins
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A Superb Selection of Modern Science Writing, 1 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have read a lot of "popular" science writing recently so bought this book. Dawkins does not include any excerpts from his own books but does give an excellent introduction to each piece. Of course the authors are all highly eminent and significant for their contributions to science, Einstein and Oppenheimer to Crick and Watson, but the quality of the writing is mostly superb, in places poetic. It has given me some real insights into the thinking of these scientists who have changed civilisation. To haver read them all individually would have taken much longer although I will now go and read many of them. My only disappointment was that James Lovelock was missed out. I am sure others could mention other scientists they would have liked included. Such is the nature of selections.

HRT MusicStreamer II
HRT MusicStreamer II
Offered by Analogue Seduction
Price: 155.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceded Expectations, 1 April 2014
This review is from: HRT MusicStreamer II (Electronics)
Bought this as an engineer friend told me an external (to my computer) DAC would reduce noise. I have a 3k hi-fi setup but am listening to far more music from my computer hard disk. Some is in flac and some mp3. I was pretty sceptical that it would make a difference other than removing some of the clicks and noises through the amp when tracks were not playing. However the improvement in sound quality is tremendous. I am very very pleased with this purchase

4.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary, 12 Dec 2013

This review is from: Roller Trio (Audio CD)
If you like Acoustic Ladyland or Polar Bear you will probably like this. Some pretty chunky pyrotechnics on the sax. Great melodies and some very muscular soloing. As a trio it presents a very open sound with some sparce comping on the guitar which also seems to be playing the bass lines. Very groove based music, which I am into.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real authority on the subject, 30 July 2013
This is a writeup of a conversation between two of the foremost authorities on the middle east. Highly recommended if you want some of the historical detail.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy products produced in illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine, 30 July 2013
Soda Stream is manufactured in illegal Israeli settlements in Palestine, so your money is supporting something really atrocious if you buy it.

Tomandwill 22TP Trumpet Gig Bag - Three Tone Grey
Tomandwill 22TP Trumpet Gig Bag - Three Tone Grey

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Features but doesn't protect Trumpet, 28 Aug 2012
A really nice gig bag with lots of features if you are okay with a soft bag. My trumpet has acquired dents in this and so I am now using a hard case. The cost of repairs makes it worth using a harder case although it will be more expensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Knockout, 21 Mar 2012
As Bruce says you have to see them live to appreciate how phenominal Neset is. Neset's technique is truely astounding. The compositions are great as well showing Bates influence, which is no bad thing, but with plenty of originality. It is dense and benefits from several playins but pays back the investment. Definitely one to watch.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Morgan on Top Form, 13 Mar 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found the book a little confusing at first. It was some time since I read the Steel Remains, which I loved, and this is very dependent upon having read SR first and remembered all of the characters. As with all of his books Steel Remains takes on some social issues. Having two gay central characters in fantasy / sf must be a first? The way he tackles race, cloning and even politics in his SF is superb. However this follow on was a romp without new ideas. The mystical elements were confusing and the pacing was poor with a bizarre final victory that came out of nowhere. It also owes somewhat to Ian Banks "Culture". Having said that I remain a big Morgan fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars A scolarly work of recent history - esential reading for the informed, 30 Jun 2011

Difficult to say anything that has not already been said. The thoroughness of the the research and the eloquence of the writing only go to emphasise the shocking truth. She stitches together beautifully the crimes of the neoliberals over the past 30 years into a coherent picture.
