5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful version of Elgar's masterpiece, 8 Sept. 2010
This review is from: Elgar: Cello Concerto (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful version of Elgar's masterpiece. Lloyd Webber and Menuhin are more faithful to Elgar's score than any others. No wonder Elgar scholar Jerrold Northrop Moore selected this as the finest ever recording for BBC Music Magazine.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is sheet music, not the book with the same title, 9 May 2010
I made the mistake of ordering this thinking that it was Julian Lloyd Webber's book. It isn't, it's sheet music of pieces from the CD.

2.0 out of 5 stars An unattractive piece of confetti, 22 April 2010
I'm afraid this concerto did nothing for me - an unattractive blend of traditional symphony orchestra textures and traditional Chinese music. Why?

Cruel to be Kind
Cruel to be Kind
by T. R. Wilson
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Grimly detailed 'crime noir', 22 April 2010
This review is from: Cruel to be Kind (Hardcover)
Tim Wilson is a cut above the average crime writer. His characters are detailed and believable and there are moments of supreme black humour as in the wonderfully claustrophobic chapter here involving an unhappily married couple who can't stand each other who are forced to endure a long car journey together. Great stuff!

Village of Fear
Village of Fear
by Martin Jenson
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Very black humour, 22 April 2010
This review is from: Village of Fear (Paperback)
A naughty send-up of dark goings on involving a sanctimonious local vicar. Very funny if perhaps slightly dated.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read!, 22 April 2010
This review is from: Travels with My Cello (Hardcover)
I loved this book! Although written early in Julian Lloyd Webber's career it is packed full of stories about his collaborations with musicians like Solti, Curzon, Handley and Boult. Written in a light, breezy style it describes what life "on the road" is REALLY like for a classical musician in a way that no one else has ever quite managed to capture. His stories of travelling with a cello are hilarious!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful new music, 29 Oct. 2009
This is an exceptional collection of fifteen new works by Patrick Hawes. The music is varied - for the most part pastoral and contemplative, but with a natural gift for melody which eludes many other composers. Performances are uniformally excellent with Julian Lloyd Webber's cello sounding absolutely gorgeous on Reflexionem. Elin Manahan Thomas and harpist Claire Jones also make very impressive contributions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overwhelmingly good, 5 Oct. 2009
Three underplayed cello concertos by Rodrigo, Delius and Lalo are given here with the kind of committment that makes you wonder why they are hardly ever heard in the concert hall. The special joy is the Delius - a glorious work, one of his best - and it is marvellously performed by Julian Lloyd Webber accompanied by that superb conductor Vernon Handley. The Rodrigo is great fun too. Five stars all round.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hutson's Best, 3 Oct. 2009
This review is from: Deadhead (Paperback)
An excellent story from Shaun Hutson - who manages to gather all the best things about his writing and imagination together for once. Easily his best book - a terrific read!
