5.0 out of 5 stars An original designer, 19 Jan 2012
This review is from: Pattern (Hardcover)
Orla Kiely is an orginal: Irish, female, anti-loud and cheap fashion designer. She tells her story from her Dublin childhood, her textile studies in London, international experience in the fashion industry to the launch of her own products and success. This book is exceedingly interesting not only for the stories it tells, but also for its content of pages upon pages of 60's inspired patterns and great designs. A great source book and a true inspiration for aspiring textile and fashion designers who aren't into throw-away fashion. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A forgotten masterpiece, 19 Jan 2012
Conversation Piece is a hidden gem in Visconti's filmography. The explosive sexual chemistry between Silvana Mangano's classical, mesmerizing beauty and Helmut Berger's dangerous charm, which will change Burt Lancaster's ordered life forever. High (italian) drama, exquisite décors, and fascinating characters. Highly recommended for a lonely afternoon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock on!, 8 Dec 2010
This review is from: Life: Keith Richards (Hardcover)
Life is an excellent read, better than I thought. It is thorough, packed with humourous observations, well-written and very funny. I recommend this book to anyone and especially the atheists and politicians who would benefit from Keith Richards's beliefs and no-nonsense views of the world. This man will survive all those who think rock n' roll is a silly occupation because he has discovered the secret of eternal youth. Scientists and other scaremongers please take note...

5.0 out of 5 stars Love at fist sight!, 4 Feb 2010
This book is terrific! Imaginative design, wealth of pictures and testimonies to illustrate how incredibly talented and exciting Stephen Sprouse was. Child of the sixties, with influences encompassing Andy Warhol, Punk and hip hop, he was the designer of youth as it used to be (R.I.P.). A trip into nostalgia, still inspirational. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars This man was for real., 10 Nov 2009
This review is from: Julius Caesar (Hardcover)
Excellent account of an extraordinary life. Unlike Brad Pitt pretending to be a hero in Hollywood blockbuster, this man was for real. Roman politics were complex, but the author tells the story in an easy to understand style. I found the retelling of the battles which makes the bulk of the book, especially vivid and exciting even though they are almost taken word for word from Caesar's own Gallic Wars. The fact that he was always victorious even in desperate situations illustrate perfectly his genius in war. Althought I found the book a bit light on the personal life of its subject, I'd recommend it for anyone who doesn't know anything about Caesar. It is well-written by someone who is a serious scholar but who knows how to be entertaining as well as informative.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best French cooking book ever, 3 Oct 2009
I am French and this book offered me both a nostalgic trip into my childhood and a staple of traditional recipes. I highly recommend it because it contains everything you need to know about French cooking without the fuss of what is percieved as French cooking by restaurateurs. This is authentic and simpler than what French cooking is made out to be. Well done to the authors!
