4.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what you want if you like Richard Bacon, exactly what you will hate if you don't., 4 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A collection of amusing stories told in the slightly smug end of informal tone that Richard Bacon fans and foes will be familiar with.
I would have rated it 5 stars were it not for the brevity - I wanted more!

This book tells the reader about life onboard a cruise ship from the point of view of a resident musician.
Having worked on a cruise ship myself I have first hand knowledge of a great deal of the situations recounted here, though am always interested to know how the same situations can be experienced differently by differ people.
Unfortunately the author doesn't have a very entertaining writing style. In fact the book is very disjointed and feels like it was written by two entirely different people, with some chapters written in a very straight forward, school work plain English, and other sections being written in the style of a surfer dude musician.
If you have read every single cruise ship related book on the market and are desperate for more then give it a go, but there is little here to recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent if you are a fan, won't win you over if you aren't., 27 May 2012

This book is basically a written word version of everything Brand has ever done. There are no real surprises, though if you are a fan you will be thoroughly entertained by this book. If you aren't, there is nothing here to challenge your opinion.
What I did find quite touching is the way that he speaks of Katy Perry towards the end of the book, and knowing that the relationship has now come to an end I felt a little sad and sorrowful.

3.0 out of 5 stars True Story? True or not it is a very sad tale., 27 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having looked into the author a little online it seems that there are some doubts about the authenticity of this tale from people claiming to know her, some saying that the whole affair is fabricated, some that she entered into a life of prostitution willingly and some quite disparaging remarks.
When I read the book I didn't doubt that this was a true story, though having been abused and dependent on a cocktail of drugs for such a long time it is probably inevitable that some parts of this story are not in chronological order and indeed it is likely that some of the events actually happened to other girls or were rumours that the author can no longer separate from her own memories.
This is certainly a grim piece of writing, though of course it could hardly be anything else. Sarah Forsythe/Sara Lee still lives a troubled life and was convicted for spitting in a nurse mouth when a mix up over a methadone prescription turned aggressive, despite knowing she had Hep C. Clearly the woman has problems, be this story true or not. Quite frankly having read the book I really hope that it is all a huge lie, but I think that poor women the world over will always suffer similar situations as the darker side of human nature will always be present.

Cruise Ship SOS: The Life-Saving Adventures of a Doctor at Sea

3.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Read, 17 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is a well written and entertaining account of a side of life onboard a cruise ship that I have never really seen, either whilst working onboard or as a passenger.
Whilst the anecdotes are well written and form an amusing narrative, I, like others, was somehow disappointed to find in the prologue that rather than being a 'proper' memoir was 'inspired by real events' and took place in part over many different times and places and in part was fiction, as the book gives the impression that it is a literal adaptation of the authors diary.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay account of life at sea, 6 May 2012
This book gives an honest if slightly repetitive account of life at sea. The writer is far from superb but the narrative is bolted together well enough.
I think that this book is more interesting to those who do or have worked at sea than Passangers hoping for a peek into the lower decks.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay but out of date, 6 May 2012

Permenant Passenger is okay, a moderately enjoyable read and competently, if not stylishly written. Having worked on cruise ships myself I feel that this nuts and bolts tale is lacking the real story of life at sea, and is not a representation of what it is like to work on a cruise liner today, more the early 90s.
It's readable and will fill a gap if you want cruise related fluff o fill the quiet time.
