4.0 out of 5 stars not Vietnamese, 23 Jan 2013

Just as a correction to one of the reviews above - Youn Sun Nah is South Korean, not Vietnamese. Anyone interested in Vietnamese jazz should try CDs by the excellent Huong Thanh or Nguyen Le.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, 6 Feb 2012
This review is from: Voice (Audio CD)
Recently (Feb 2012) managed to catch a performance by Hiromi's trio in Europe in which they performed much of this material. The concert featured Anthony Jackson on bass (as on CD) plus Steve Smith on drums. The concert was simply wonderful. My review cannot capture just how good Hiromi is live but you can at least get a flavour from this CD. Certainly the best and most enjoyable piano trio that I have seen since the much-lamented EST (and that includes some good ones such as John Law's and Zoe Rahman's). The fact that Hiromi can get sidemen such as Jackson and Smith to play with her indicates the esteem in which she is held by her fellow musicians. Ignore ths sour-grapes merchants - this is not technique for technique's sake and neither is Hiromi's clearly evident on-stage emotional involvement in her music synthetic. Utterly sublime - just wish she would hurry up and come back to the UK - preferably bringing Akiko Yano with her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's hope they come to UK soon!, 31 Dec 2011
Another delight from these two major talents who deserve to be much better known in the West. Hiromi is an astonishing young jazz pianist who has already cut her teeth with both Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke as well as in solo, trio and group formats. She is also great to watch play - check out her impassioned performances via youtube videos (e.g. with Stanley Clarke band at Ronnie Scott's). Akiko is a long standing star of an earlier incarnation of Yellow Magic Orchestra as well as in her own right (check out YMO at the Budokan as well her own songs (e.g. 'Presto') on youtube). She has a very distinctive voice, is a great pianist, and is held in considerable esteem by the jazz giants (e.g. Pat Metheny) who have appeared on her albums. She is also the sometime spouse of composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. I can't wait for Akiko and Hiromi to come/come back to the UK, whether together or in any of their numerous other configurations.
On another note, I ordered 'Get Together' direct from Japan using Thanks to the wonderful Japanese postal service it arrived in no time at all for about half of the price being asked for the used equivalent here.
