The Choir Mistress
The Choir Mistress

Funny, clever and chilling. Hard to put down. I would have given it 5 stars were it not for some copy-editing and proof-reading infelicities (which I assume are the publisher's responsibility, not the author's.)
Do hope there will be more novels from Carol Bunyan.
Highly recommended.

In the Line of Duty
In the Line of Duty
Price: £5.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended read, 18 Mar. 2015
Beautifully written, engaging story of love and conflict during World War 1.
The characters and their homes and their lives in Wales and London are well drawn and the issues they confront are timeless.

Sara Banerji is one of the most inventive novelists I know. This book takes you into an extraordinary and absorbing world and has adventure, magic, humour and believable human psychology all together.

5.0 out of 5 stars At least as good as Brooklyn, I.e. Brilliant!, 8 Mar. 2015

This review is from: Nora Webster (Kindle Edition)
Perfectly beautiful writing about real, touching characters. In one sense, not a lot happens, but every small event - the purchase of a record player, a singing lesson - holds your attention and engages your feelings. I liked this even better than Brooklyn, possibly because I found the protagonist easier to identify with.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Cambridge female Morse?, 8 Mar. 2015

Not usually a genre I read, but I loved this gripping story set in Cambridge. (Why haven't they made these Laura Principal novels into a rival to Morse?)

Another of this author's brilliant novels. This a sequel to The Siege and perhaps even more distressing in that it deals with the undeserved suffering of characters whom one really cares about and because it is based on recent horrific history( Stalin's USSR). A book to make you cry even while you admire the brilliance of the writing.!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for the squeamish, 24 Jan. 2015

I was in the minority at our book club and I gave this up after I'd read about a third. I'm squeamish. There's a lot of what someone called 'medical porn' - overlong accounts of operations. Others in our group were fascinated and gripped by the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric, 24 Jan. 2015

If you like ghosts and dogs and other animals this will appeal to you. As with most anthologies this is a mixed bunch of tales, but I thought most of them were well written and atmospheric.

Moving and enjoyable short read set in Australia. Some really nice writing and a wonderful sense of place. And nice to read a romance that reminds us there is more than one kind of love.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, 20 Dec. 2014

I was enthralled by this clever and thought -provoking story which turns big issues with an intriguing plot and an engaging cast of characters into a page-turner.
