Awe inspiring!, 15 Mar. 2006
Having never heard of Bear Grylls before I read "Facing Up", I had no idea what to expect. But soon after i started reading I realised that this was going to be one of my all-time favourite books. I was hooked from the very beginning right the way through to the end, and Grylls writing really gets the reader involved, writing comically at times but then contrasting that with the magnitude of the tasks ahead of him. Unlike most books, with "Facing Up" there wasn't a point where i felt it was dragging on, as every chapter is filled with the hopes and fears of Bear and his companions, giving the book a sense of comradeship and showing their intimate feelings.
Bear does not see his ascent of Everest as "conquering" a mountain, rather he is humble and modest and describes his journey as something more spiritual. He is a very likeable author and motivational speaker and i would recommend this book to anyone and everyone!
