5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive dictionary for Learners, 15 Jun 2012

This dictionary was purchased for a school library. It is useful as a dictionary for English learners of Japanese and Japanese learners of English. It can be used in the exam situation as it doesn't have extra sections that would make it ineligible for use in public exams in the UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading for aspiring opera singers, 21 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book has been recommended as a useful and interesting read for aspiring young opera singers studying at Conservatoires and Schools of Music. It is not just a biographical book but one that emphasizes what Renee has learned from others and the priorities she has made during her career. It gives a useful insight into a roller-coaster journey emphasizing hard work, determination, opportunities taken and vocal technique as well as meetings with great teachers and aspirational musicians who saw her potential and helped a great musician to reach the top of her profession. It gives lots of tips to aspirational singers. An interesting and inspirational read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hardwearing headphones with reasonable sound, 14 Jun 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These Sony headphones are reasonably priced, offering reasonable sound quality but are extremely hardwearing when compared to similar headphones by other manufacturers. They are used 13 hours a day in a music school for 40 weeks a year and they last twice as long as other headphones in this testing environment. They are excellent value for money and perform well. The sound quality is not as good as equivalent Sennheiser headphones, but the latter are more expensive and have flimsy wiring which often fails. If you need hardwearing headphones and are willing to compromise on sound quality, these headphones are an excellent choice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Holst - Interesting DVD, 14 Jun 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A reasonable introduction to the music of Holst with excerpts from his most popular suite "The Planets" and inclusion of his less well known compositions, particularly wonderful sacred choral music and that written for the young musicians of St Paul's School, London. The documentary is too long. Some of the background film material is inappropriate for use in schools. The moody shots of musicians performing the excerpts was unnecessary, the music speaks for itself without special effects or the repetitive use of film clips of the English countryside. Interviews with family members and musician's with an expert knowledge of Holst's music added a bit of weight to this documentary and the performances were excellent. Holst's family background, politics and travels were well handled. The influence of other composers on his compositional style could have been more detailed. Overall the documentary reveals Holst as an interesting and innovative composer, creating music for musician's of all abilities, whilst leading a busy life as a family man, teacher and musical director.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stylish protection for Kindle, 24 Jan 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The purple cover is stylish and well made with contrast stitching and holes for the speakers. It looks and smells a bit plastic for a "leather" cover. However, it is solidly made offering excellent protection for the Kindle on its daily travels. The magnetic clip seems to work OK. You can get at all the buttons easily as it is made to measure for the latest generation of Kindle.

The History and Architecture of Chetham's School and Library
The History and Architecture of Chetham's School and Library
by Clare Hartwell
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £23.96

4.0 out of 5 stars Chetham's School of Music Building, 1 Dec 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an excellent book if you are interested in English Vernacular architecture. It focusses on the important collegiate manor house that is now Chetham's School of Music. This is a hidden treasure in Manchester with the famous Chetham's library and the former home of Chetham's Hospital Grammar School, set up by Humphrey Chetham. There are plans and information about how the building was used, developed and extended. This is the best book on the subject with lots of beautiful illustrations of the exterior and interior of the building. It is well laid out with appendices, contents and index. It is a scholarly book and does not cover the history of the schools that have and do occupy the building or its inhabitants in any detail.
