5.0 out of 5 stars A deft touch, 28 April 2015

Some friends and strangers will soon convene for the purpose of making an H.P. Lovecraft style movie. I will see to it that this film is screened in order that younger people will know how a handful of British pros made a testosterone fueled film out of thin air. If Sim does not have a statue in your country, it is a disgrace! This is a chill from hell and one of the best.

I have never understood most British humor, being from the Colonies. This is supposed to be a laugh riot but I remained unmoved. With roots going back to Karloff's THE GHOUL, you would think there was more going on. I will allow that Sid James is interesting to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delight, 8 Jun. 2013

I had just watched an episode before seeing this review request. I'm a little shamed to admit I'd never heard of this series until recently. I figured one or two out, felt a few were too contrived, but the rest are a joy to behold. I would like to thank the English reviewers who turned me on to this funny and fascinating program.

And it sure as hell won't be the lurching, grey skinned, vampiric malignancy of Boris Karloff, guaranteed in this film to age your garden statuary by 20 years, never mind your nerves. Rough thing to open a door to, as he re-establishes his dominance over the horror field under the tutelage of maestro Mario Bava; international co-operation at it's finest. Both versions are presented here, shutting the door on that complaint. The U.S. version seems to have an edge pictorially. So, boys and girls...if you wake up in the morning and look like THE 4-D MAN in the mirror, you will know what you watched the night before. Bad boy, bad boy what ya gone do?

3.0 out of 5 stars Ho Hum, 3 May 2013

When a hundred English fans tell you a picture you never heard of is the most hilarious film they ever saw, the radar should go up because you are about to be bombed. Maybe the title led me to believe it was a fantasy instead of a mystery but a lot of things creak here besides the house. One step above CARRY ON SCREAMING, which is really painful. Nice to see some of the cast, certainly the great Ray Milland, and the Dance Of The Dolls is creepy. But I was left thinking there was no there there.

We all own Blu-rays where you can see "every single hair" on their heads. This is not one of them! This picture only has a pretense to sharpnest in the close ups. This title was a long time coming and looks like a glorified standard. It is a bitter disappointment and a waste in this format. Flesh tones and contrast appear decent enough so whats going on here is a mystery to me. The rating, of course, is strickly for picture quality.

It's not that I mind telling you Brits how good your movies are but Amazon should realize this is better and more productively said to Americans. I have always liked this film for a simple reason. It is less assembly line than many other Hammer films. Put another way, CULT OF THE COBRA is in many ways not a typical Universal horror from the 1950's or HORROR ISLAND the usual Universal product of the 40's. Somehow, it is more an individual undertaking with more to bring to the table.

Alas, when I wrote a review of the horrible German Blu-ray for THE LAST MAN ON EARTH, I was taken to task by another poster because it ended up in the standard section. So, Amazon... how do I tell my countrymen the good news when many of them know nothing of this product?

5.0 out of 5 stars But baby, look at you now!, 16 Aug. 2012

This is a review of the recent British two disc Blu-ray. NEVER before and Never again will you see this film look like this and enjoy the multitude of extras that this six hundred pound gorilla came with! It is required viewing in the same way that you must see SINGING IN THE RAIN even if you despise musicals. Stateside, it will require an multi-zone player which you will budget for by foregoing food, other dvd's, or anything else that prevents you from owning one. Mine is an Oppo, built like a tank, obtained from Bombay Electronics in Chicago who know their way around such things. The alternative is to stand in front of a butt kicking machine with a rope! I trust I have not made this film seem too inconsequential.
