Sir Georg Solti was far too scrupulous a musician ever to let a really mediocre recording pass but DECCA have been careful to choose the repertoire in which he truly shone and, in cases where he recorded a work more than once, have chosen the version generally considered the best. Many of these recordings are classic, benchmark ones: the Bartok, Mahler, Schubert and Strauss in particular and the 'Pomp and Cicumstance Marches' are as full of splendour as any in the catalogue. It is good to see the return to the catalogue of Solti's 1960s Vienna performance of Bruckner, preferable to his later Chicago version. He is also, perhaps unexpectedly, an outstanding interpreter of "Petrushka". This is lateish Solti and the Chicago Symphony plays it with a most beguiling warmth of tone. My only slight regret is that the four Suppé overtures recorded in Vienna were not included: no conductor has ever made them ring out so superbly.

DECCA, as always, has provided splendid sound and I heartily recommend this bargain set of one of the truly great conductors of the last century.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Delight from Start to Finish!, 30 April 2013
I must confess to not knowing a note of Mercadante before getting this set and only bought it because Riccardo Muti was conducting. I put on the first disc with the thought that perhaps the opera might turn out to be a justly neglected masterpiece but from the very first notes of the overture I was entranced. This opera is full of delightful melodies and the music flows so that one's attention is fully held. There are a number of melodies and dances in Spanish style (the work was written during the composer's stay in Spain) and display pieces for the singers. There are reminiscences of Rossini (his crescendos) and of Mozart in the delicate orchestration but the writing is no mere pastiche: Mercadante has very much a voice of his own.

It has to be said that the characterization lacks the depth of Mozart and the individuality of Rossini but I found the whole experience uplifting.

The singers are all young but no concessions need to be made to their age: they are all excellent, as is the orchestra of young musicians, the Cherubini Orchestra, founded by maestro Muti. This is a live performance, made at the Ravenna Festival in 2011: the audience behaves perfectly and applause never breaks into the music. The theatre has a warm acoustic and the sound is well balanced.

The set is elegantly packaged in a smart box: the CDs come in a digipack and there is an elegant libretto complete with English translation.

Heartily recommended to all those music lovers who like to make new discoveries.

Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This set is a very real bargain. Each disc contains 80 minutes of music and the sound recording is just about the best I have heard of a piano - a wide, deep soundstage and a big, though never uncomfortable, dynamic range from thrilling 'fortissimi' to the most delicate 'pianissimi'.

I must say that Lortie was no more than a name to me but I heard on French radio a panel of critics concluding that his was the best "Années" available and I see no reason to doubt that judgement. This was Liszt's first really great work showing that he was more than just a showman. He wrote it when his passionate affair with Marie d'Agoult was at its height, and it was she who encouraged Liszt to develop intellectually and read more philosophy and theology. The passion and sense of peace and awe as well as the evocation of landscape, particularly in the First Book ("Suisse"),are all conveyed in Lortie's reading, which is both moving and exciting.

So don't hesitate: these days one can't be sure how long a recording will remain available.
