A triumphant book that teaches us the possibilities of new thinking, 7 Dec 2012
Culture Shock is a recently published book by the exciting Brighton based business owner and now author, Will McInnes. In Culture Shock, Will takes us on the journey of how he came to run one the most new thinking, open, honest and democratic work places in the UK today. The book identifies quite quickly and clearly how the world of business is currently suffering due to the essentially boisterous legacy of 20th century management. The way Will explains this truly leads you to realise that the future cannot be sustained if it continues to operate in this way, and in order to breathe life and human success back into our businesses, we must radically change our working values and cultures, hence the name `Culture Shock'.
But all is not lost. Will tells us about the businesses and people who have inspired him and the lessons other companies have learned when working to achieve a newer way thinking. This spans from the `new on the scene' retail revolutionary Zappos, who on the face of it just sell shoes online, but have in fact positively turned the world of company culture and staff empowerment on its head. Then back to the 80s with industrial giant SEMCO, and how their CEO Ricardo Semlar almost flattened traditional hierarchies and took democratic management to a whole new dimension.
The way Will discusses these break through companies and how they have motivated him to continue along the curve of better, social business is genuinely convincing of that we can change and we can make the world a better place through business.
If you believe there is more to life than money and you look for happiness in your work, then you are already apart of this movement and this book is essential reading for you to personify your feelings into real actions and philosophies.
