5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 11 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Superb reporting on a tale of heart breaking bravery and sacrifice on the ground and some grim background of hubris arrogance and one right stupidity by senior soldiers.

To chase the oil in Iraq Bush abandoned Afghanistan and left his own forces over stretched and poorly supported. This has yet to come back and bite him but God knows it bit far too many of the men who lived and fought for their country in Afghanistan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sparse and perfect, 27 Mar. 2015

Parker , like Elmore Leonard, can write.

Sometimes it is that simple.

Clean, simple, direct prose. Sparse precise dialogue.
Easy humour and sharp action.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Three Star Film....Shame Really, 11 Feb. 2015
All that money, all that attention to detail and yet....a poor script.

Its flaws nearly kill this film. The dull dour humourless relationships between the men shows a total lack of undertstanding of
how people interact. No joking, no laughter just po faced faux seriousness because THIS IS A SERIOUS FILM DAMMIT!
Ok I appreciate Labeouf has the acting dexterity of a wardrobe and can ony show one emotion per movie so he is ideal for the hard silent type but everyone else too? Really?

Much has been made of the 'authenticity' of the film - by which people mean the uniforms, the vehicles, the equipment and possibly even the haircuts. But sadly that's where it ends. Just one simple example.... Shermans taking on Tigers head on? Really? That's a lot of burned out Shermans we're talking about. There is a serious issue to be examined there; the Shermans were utterly outclassed by the Tigers and Panthers and its ony because of the outstanding ingenuity, skill and unbelievable bravery of the crews that the Allies could take on German armoured forces. THERE is a story... men fighting and continuing to fight even though they were hopelessly outclassed, undergunned and lacking in armour. Yet they did it time and time and time again losing far too many crews in the process.

Yet in this film the combat - though it looks an sounds good - is Call of Duty stuff. Thank God those Germans were stupid, inept and hopeless fighters. The secenes are all sound and fury with very little sense or inteligence or thought behind them.

Its worth a watch, no doubt about it, but this is suppoused to be a SERIOUS AND WORTHY film. I mean just look at the cover with Brad looking all mean and moody and exhausted and ....whatever....

But if that was its purpose it fails miserably becuase of its flaws are so profound they undermine the 'authenticity' that the makers strived for. There is no use raising the subject of Allies shooting German prisoners -which we know happened - in a film where we dont care about the soldiers doing such things and wondering hwo these men came to be able to carry out such acts. Or, indeed, care about the Germans because they are COD 'bad guys' rather than victims. To deal with such a serious subject and make the audience be shocked/horrified by it requires the audience to be engaged on something other than the shall, trivial levels this script offers.

The tanks may be 'authentic' but the characters are not.
The unforms may be authentic but the tactics used are not
The firearms may be authentic but the script is not.

I dont think they meant this film to be a mediocre three star Call of Duty type of movie I think this was supposed to be a serious, hard look at men in war that would have the producers dreaming about Oscars and Golden Globes.

Sadly all they have is a three star Call of Duty movie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Meh.... Still producing 3 star stuff I'm afraid, 10 Oct. 2014
This review is from: Moonshine In The Trunk (Audio CD)
How this gets 5 stars from people is bit mystifying to me.

Certainly its a partial return to form but its still moribund stuff really. There are good songs here but not enough of them.
Far too much, by the numbers, songwriting and repetitious musicianship. Its formulaic and a bit lazy.
Its like everyone has turned up and produced a 'Brad Paisley Album' by following a script.

There is nothing here to suggest that anyone has sat down and acknowledged that the recent past is littered with
'ok' albums where a few high quality songs are outnumbered by mediocre dross that even elite musicians cannot
disguise or dress up.

Songs are the key. If you cant write enough good songs, swallow your pride, take the royalty hit and go get some
quality songs. They are out there so go look for them.

If no one in the Paisley camp can sit down and say 'Nice song Brad...but not good enough' then we will be looking at album after album of mediocre songs dumbing down the 2 or 3 cracking tracks that are produced.

He's a cracking singer, a great guitarist and can produce great stuff but I'm getting a bit tired of the laziness that seems to say that every song he writes is worth our while buying. At least half of them aren't.

I'm hoping for the next album to have 10 or 12 GREAT songs...dont care who writes them.

I dont want 15 to 17 (bonus tracks....they're hardly ever a bonus are they) songs handed to me just because they have his name on as writer or co writer.

Give me an ALBUM of good songs please.

Superb style and imagery and characterisation.

Quite an unusual style but it works so well and so seamlessly that you don't notice how clever it is....

3.0 out of 5 stars A question, 22 July 2013
Can anyone recall the last decent film Will Smith made?

Me neither.

This isn't it for sure.

Lots of talk about how its a movie about scientology etc etc etc...

Be that as it may it makes no difference to the basic fact that despite the money spent on this production its just not
that good.

Mediocre at best. Its very much a wait until you can rent it and have a 'lost' afternoon to fill up.

Not a bad film but shallow, dull in parts and not that exciting when it tries to be...
