5.0 out of 5 stars A smart and efficient pen, 7 Mar. 2016

I find that I lose ballpoint pens very easily and then acquire others, some of which are of poor quality. I find that by paying a bit more for a quality pen like the Parker Jotter I can hang on to my pen much longer. It is comfortable to hold and use and the ink does not smudge. I tried to buy it locally but the local shop no longer stocks them because they do not sell in large volume. So, I went on Amazon.

I like printing a picture on my discs rather than messy handwriting with a felt pen.

Napoleon and his British captives
Napoleon and his British captives
by Michael Lewis
Edition: Hardcover

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting naval history, 7 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My reading of this book was in the hope of discovering something about an ancestor who was taken prisoner as a merchant seaman during the Napoleonic Wars. This book offers an interesting and informative account and analysis of the fate of 600 or so Royal Naval officers and an insight to the civilian hostages or détenus but almost nothing about the merchant seamen and their Masters and Mates. In addition to the detailed appendices there is a comprehensive description of the various prisons in which they were kept and interesting anecdotes about the long treks they made from capture to imprisonment and the comparatively few attempt at escape. The number of prisoners increased over time to well over 16,000 after Bonaparte decree of May 1823 banning the traditional cartels for prisoner exchange. Lewis also goes part way in explaining why the British captives had to travel such distances to their prisons whereas many of our French prisoners were kept in the hulks; apart from new prisons such as Dartmoor which were built.

2.0 out of 5 stars Why so lonG?, 18 Feb. 2016

It is an over-long account of this horrific event. Everyone with an interest in the European commerce and exploration of the Far East needs to know and understand this tragedy but to justify a book of this length it should better explain the Dutch religious and commercial background.

It is an extremely well researched book that builds a comprehensive picture of Britain's long struggle with France in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.

The Whaling Trade of North-east England 1750-1850
The Whaling Trade of North-east England 1750-1850
by Tony Barrow
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Brave men in small boats, 26 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is an academic book that one reads for the wealth of information that it contains rather than for general interest. That said, it is the story of intrepid seamen from the North-east making money from an industry that is now almost gone. It is a well produced short book with good illustrations and useful sources of further reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars George Vancouver - a great explorer, 26 Jun. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
George Vancouver was one of the greatest explorers of the late eighteenth century, mapping what is now Canada's NW coast, negotiating with the Spanish and visiting SW Australia. The pressures of command led eventually to mental illness and over severity towards the expedition's troublemaker Thomas Pitt. Pitt being a cousin of the Prime Minister managed to ridicule Vancouver in the eyes of London society. The book tells the story of another great man laid low not by the elements or foreign powers but by the snobbish London society. The word betrayal is rightly in the title. A very readable book that I recommend without reserve.

This review is from: Fatal Passage (Paperback)
The story of John Rae and his exploring of Canada's Artic wilderness deserves to be better known. He never got the acclaim that he merited as a result of vilification orchestrated by Lady Jane Franklin. It is a well told story. My one small criticism is the inadequacy of the sketch maps.

Garrison Life at Vindolanda: A Band of Brothers
Garrison Life at Vindolanda: A Band of Brothers
by Anthony Birley
Edition: Paperback
Price: £15.58

2.0 out of 5 stars Academic rather than exciting, 24 Mar. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The edition I purchased must have been older than this one. Mine had no colour on the cover. I found the book rather boring and so frequently found excuses for putting it aside. It tells the story of the archaeology of the site rather than the story of the garrison. I had bought it prior to visiting the site. I hope it will mean more to me after my visit. The b/w photos of the tablets could benefit from graphic interpretation to allow the lay reader to decode some of the words. The Wall by Alistair Moffatt is a much better introduction to Hadrian's Wall and the Roman occupation despite its wealth of detail.
