The tablet is fast and not too heavy. You can use mini HDMI to connect to TV. Also you can use a memory card. The screen is not always too clear but acceptable. Sometimes web text is not legible.

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific read!, 15 Nov. 2013

This series gets better and better. Number 12 is one of the best, seeing our 2 heroes in the war to win Britannia. What is brilliantly handled is the complicated relationship between Macro, the older soldier centurion and his younger friend and protege, now his senior officer, Cato. One of the glories of 12 novel series is the development of Cato an unpromising recruit to his current position as Prefect. This is just one of the many things to enjoy in "The Blood Crows". The battles are intricate and exciting, the whole story created and told by a master.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impeccable virtuosity but ......, 30 Aug. 2013

Having seen David Hansen's appearances on You Tube, I looked forward to his debut CD and was not disappointed. Hansen is an extraordinary singer - a glorious voice with an astonishing technique that would have impressed Farinelli himself! I agree whole heartedly with the first reviewer in his comments about the choice of repertoire. Hansen obviously wants to make his mark in a musical world that is now teeming with countertenors. The time when James Bowman and Rene Jacobs held sway are long gone and Hansen is going to be, without doubt, amongst the stars along with Jarrousky, Cencic, Daniels and Mehta.

All the arias on this disc are showpieces, even the slow ones and Hansen sings them perfectly. Broschi's "Son qual nave" Hansen throws off with ease. It is interesting that this aria, in a much abbreviated form, appears in the feature movie "Farinelli" and the screen writer has the singer complaining to his brother that it is all "runs and ornaments". This can be said of everything on the disc, unfortunately. They have a rarity value (and I doubt is "Son qual nave" has ever been sung complete since the time of Farinelli) and for lovers of Baroque opera this CD is a must. What one longs for now is a CD with music from the real Masters of the period. Hansen's contemporaries have shown that Handel, for example, wrote extensively for virtuoso singers, providing them with music worthy of their musical and dramatic talents. I hope that David Hansen will provide us with music of real value in his next outing on disc. In the meantime, buy this one and enjoy the singing of this truly astonishing rising star. I must also mention the superb playing by the Academia Montis Regis under Alessandro de Marchi. The orchestral ritornelli are thrilling and in the quiet arias some exquisite solo oboe playing.

This is great story, well thought out and executed. The background research for setting in the city of Rome is impeccable, giving readers a real insight into Roman life. Out two heroes continue to entertain us in what one of the finest of the Cato / Macro series. Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liszt playing at its best., 26 Aug. 2013

Alexei Grynyuk has been noted in recent years as the equally capable pianist in a duo partnership with violinist Nicola Benedetti. On this new cd we have Alexei as a soloist in his own right. It is very remarkable album in every way. An all Liszt programme is headed by Liszt's B minor Sonata. This sonata is one of the greatest intellectual and technical challenges in the piano repertoire and Grynyuk shows himself fully equipped to deal with the virtuoso and emotional demands of the music. The notorious double octaves are thrown off with brilliant clarity while the lyrical episodes are played with a wonderful palette of quiet tones. This is a performance that stands amongst the finest on disc.

The remainder of the programme is equally satisfying, from a brilliant Mephisto Waltz to some wonderfully colourful playing in pieces from the Anees de Pelerinage. Finally, La Campanella left me gasping in admiration at the clarity and musical brilliance of Alexei Grynyuk' virtuosity.

This whole Liszt programme will be a delight to all lovers of the piano repertoire. Grynyuk shows himself as a consummate performer, brilliant and thoughtful and at all times musical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Handelian performance at its best, 26 Aug. 2013

This review is from: Handel: Ombra cara (MP3 Download)
This cd is spectacular if every way. The choice of programme, the singer's performance and the orchestral playing. The selection of Handel arias steers away from the usual popular pieces. The choice shows Handel at his finest, with both emotionally moving and dramatic numbers. Mehta's singing is marvellous. He produces a fine individual sound that serves him with long lines and some astonishing virtuosity. Finally, the Baroque orchestra under Jacobs plays with great sensitivity and drama, lending a truly musical support to Mehta's performance. I unreservedly recommend this album to all devotees of Handel and Baroque opera.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing experience, 6 Aug. 2013

I am an avid collector of historic recordings, both from studio and live performances. Having bought the Bayreuth Vision collection and purchased the Met collection looking forward to an equally exciting set of performances. The casts are wonderful with great names like Flagstad and Melchior singing together, especially in "Tristan und Isolde" - a partnership for all time. However, my reservations lie not with the singers but with the recording quality and the conducting of Bodanzky. There is a world of difference in the sound quality between the Bayreuth on-stage recordings and those from the Met. The Met sound, despite being cleaned up by up to date technology, is thin and sounds its age. I know most of the recordings are pre-WW II and therefore older than most of the Bayreuth performances, but it still remains a disappointment. I have a couple of Bodanzky live recordings in my collection and have always disliked his excessively fast tempi, but in the performance of "Tristan" in this set it is ridiculous. It seems at times as if the singers, great though they are, struggle to keep up and get ther words out. As for the orchestra in this opera, the playing is scrappy - how else could the strings play at such fast tempi.

Other performances are fine and can be enjoyed, as long as listeners are prepared for a less than perfect sound quality. For devotees of historic Wagner performances I would recommend the Bayreuth Vision set with classic casts and exceptional conductors.

2.0 out of 5 stars A promising but disappointing resource, 7 April 2013

This review is from: Petrucci Sheet Music (App)
I was very excited at the prospect of being able to access so much music in original editions but found that many of them were not available or took too long to download on my Kindle. Some pieces downloaded the front cover or first page of music and would not allow any further access. Works that did download were clear and legible. However, I think that the application is too slow and needs to be much faster to be really useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful film of Great Performances, 17 Feb. 2013

For fans of Philippe Jaroussky, this DVD is a must. The excerpts from his concerts are terrific with great performances from the soloist and his various accompanying ensembles. I am not keen on the way in which Purcell's "Sound the Trumpet" turns into a swing fest for all musicians present. I found that rather embarrassing. Otherwise this is a fascinating peek at the professional life of a great performer and one of the musical world's leading counter-tenors.

I bought this book for information while I was preparing a performance of a Bach choral work. All the information is supberbly presented and the book eminently readable. For anyone musician who wants to get closer the Bach, one of Baroque's most inspiring composers, this book is a "must".
