RAF Combat Units: SEAC 1941-45 (Aircam Airwar)
RAF Combat Units: SEAC 1941-45 (Aircam Airwar)
by Bryan Philpott
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Be careful of the title., 23 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Titled "RAF Combat units SEAC 1941-45" is in fact more of a story about the RAF in the SEAC theatre as opposed to data regarding all the units that took part. Nevertheless it is a good read that describes the ferocious air war that took place in what still is very much a forgotten conflict. There are some decent colour profiles of various aircraft and an account of the use of the Vultee Vengeance, very much a forgotten aircraft, it gave sterling service until the arrival of later US built fighter-bombers. If you want to get a flavour of how it was in the Burma campaign the this is a good start.

The definitive story of Rosebud Kitmaster and their siblings, Airfix and Dapol. Well written, informative with some sparkling photographs. Kitmaster HO/OO railways kits remain a legend some 60 odd years since their inception this books tells why that remains so. A great coffee table, birthday, Christmas or whatever present, you'll be going back to look at it time and time again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know., 20 Nov 2013

Often called "The Forgotten War" information about this conflict is not something you find easily. This film set of DVDs gives the viewer a very good insight into actually what happened and why. With commentary from those who were there and fought this set is well worth the money. Enjoy it, we did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Massive historical look-back, 21 Jan 2012

A wonderful work of art, a collection of historical artefacts and collectables dating right back to the beginnings of Pan Am's start. Not a read as such, more of a nostalgic look at what may well have been the world's foremost airline.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Incredible Walker RN - U boat hunter/killer supreme, 29 July 2010
This book covers the life and battles of one Frederic Walker RN, from his early days between the two world wars until his untimely death in 1944. No one person knew more, fought more or sunk more u-boats that Walker did. As so often happens to great warriors, that during peacetime and the "Sitzkrieg" months it looked like his naval career was over despite the fact that he was the Nr.1 Royal Navy anti-submarine expert and that of all the combatants, the UK was more dependent on the sea than anyone else and that lifeline would be and very much was threatened by submarine warfare. Although widely recognised by the naval community he remains very much to this day an unknown figure. If he had been Russian, German, American or French, streets, naval vessels, schools and the like would have been named after him, alas he was a Brit and that virtually garauntees obscurity. This is one heck of a book about one heck of a man, a thoroughly entertaining and informative piece of work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful reference for this little known battlefront, 24 Jun 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
One of the best Osprey "Aircraft Of The Aces" series, this one deals with the arrival of the Supermarine Spitfire in the Pacific and India/Burma theaters. At first only the Mk V was available, whilst being as good as most Japanese fightes, the numbers just weren't there. Later on the magnificent Mk VIII was supplied in greater quantities, the Mk VIII swept all before it, it was without doubt the very best Merlin engined model of this world famous fighter. Any contact with Japanese fighters againt the Mk VIII usually spelt doom for the former. Lots of colour illustrations, facts, figures and anecdotes, a thoroughly good read would suit the enthousiast or model maker alike.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best from Osprey, 24 Jun 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is one of the very best issues of Osprey's series "Aircraft Of The Aces". Following the history of both the Mustang and Thunderbolt in UK & Commonwealth service the reader is informed of how important these 2 aircraft were. The Mustang was probably the best all round land based fighter of WW II and gave the RAF something to fight back with deep inside Germany. The Thunderbolt was useed exclusively in the India/Burma theater and was ideally suited to that rough, tough environment. A good read, well illustrated a perfect book for the enthousiast or model maker alike. I thoroughly recommend it.

Aircraft of the Aces 22: Allied Aces in Asia,

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor makeover from Osprey, 24 Jun 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book gives information and data for both US and British/Commonwealth pilots in the Asian theatre. Mostly a re-run of books from the excellent "Ace" series. The colour illustrations have been reduced to 2 per page instead of the normal 3 or 4 we have come to expect from Osprey. What Osprey appear to have done is take things from other books in this series and re-hash it into a poor reference book. You can pick them up cheaply but frankly I wouldn't bother.

5.0 out of 5 stars A not to miss reference book about the late marks of Spitfires, 24 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As the piston engined WW II fighters now fade from distant memories this book tells the story of the latter day Spitfire. Designed as a short range home defence interceptor it found itself flung into every sort of role imagined. With the need to constantly fly faster, higher, longer, more heavier armaments the Spitfire alway came through. Perhaps only the very late FW - 190D was a match for the late Griffon engined versions, this book covers all later marks with a wealth of photographs and 7 pages of wonderful colour illustrations. Buy it........
