I primarily bought this for the Spiders from Mars era stuff but was blown away by some of some of the early stuff like 'In the Heat of the Morning', 'Silly Boy Blue' and 'The Cygnet Committee'. Really good quality recordings xx

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, dark set of cards., 23 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Hermetic Tarot Deck (Cards)
A beautiful, intricately designed deck of cards. More complicated to read than the Hanson-Roberts deck (which I would suggest for beginners as I started with). This set of cards has a depth that I'm sure with continual use will become more apparent.

The Rise of the Fourth Reich: The Secret Societies That Threaten to Take Over America
The Rise of the Fourth Reich: The Secret Societies That Threaten to Take Over America

5.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise..., 25 Mar 2013

There is such a wealth of information of where all the ‘brains’ went to after the end of the war; and I didn’t know where to start to find an informative record of it. I purchased this book , willing to take it with a big pinch of salt, thinking it would be quite OTT (as the title and blurbs seem to sell it) and convince us that there were Nazi’s under our beds… but… the reality is actually more frightening. This book doesn’t need to overstretch the theorising; it cites recorded history and fact about how America assimilated the thinkers that were left without a role after WWII. I came away from this book asking more questions than I did when I started it. A very interesting read…

The Book of English Magic
The Book of English Magic
by Philip Carr-Gomm
Edition: Paperback
Price: 11.89

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful..., 26 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is great: it covers such a vast range of the history of various subjects in English Magic, and countless characters notorious throughout that history. It never fails to be interesting, and is not a ‘heavy’ read. At the end of each chapter it suggests how you could possibly try out some of the activities it covers like dowsing and rune reading, and further places to go – or books to read if you wish to know more.

When people have seen me sat reading the book I’ve easily got them interested in talking about different subject within it and have now since bought 4 more copies which I have given to people as gifts; it’s that interesting. It’s something you can dip in and out of as you please.

Mutants & Masterminds RPG GM's Kit
Mutants & Masterminds RPG GM's Kit

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant... but necessary?, 26 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The best thing about the GM’s kit is the ‘quick start’ character design section, which means you can quite easily form and create new characters very quickly and tweak them quite simply to how you want them to be. That’s priceless – especially as I had to create 20 characters and NPC’s before the start of the campaign.

I read recently online that this is to be incorporated into the 3rd edition rule book though. The fold out card has the stats and tables you need on but – do you really need it? I usually photo copy them out and paste them on to one piece of larger card. If the character design section does get put in the rulebook, this purchase isn’t really necessary…

A Writer At War: Vasily Grossman with the Red Army 1941-1945
A Writer At War: Vasily Grossman with the Red Army 1941-1945
by Vasiliĭ Semenovich Grossman
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully balanced writing..., 26 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I saw Vasily Grossman mentioned in a documentary on how the Soviets helped the Allied Forces in WWII, and the presenter quoted from his work from time to time so I was interested in finding out more.
Vasily’s power as a writer and what has assured him his place in history, is his honesty. He writes beautifully about conditions for the Red Army which at most times grim, and later on, as a Jew, has the horror of reporting on the evidence of genocide committed in various cities and towns and ultimately – has to face up to the reality that this is how his mother met her death. From the front line in Russia, all the way up to and including the invasion of berlin.

He manages to subdue his anger and to continue to write directly, concisely and fluidly. He does not shy away from admitting that at times, the Red Army behaved terribly with the treatment of the German civilians as they marched in, and the brutality and rape committed against the females. Very strong war journalism, which deliver balanced facts and he doesn’t let a bombastic ego take over which some war correspondents tend to.

Public Image Limited - Album
Public Image Limited - Album
Price: 6.55

4.0 out of 5 stars The most 'listenable' album – easy entry level listening., 24 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Whilst I like all of Pil's back catalogue, some of it can come as a bit of a surprise if people are expecting anything like the Sex Pistols from John Lydon. He was desperately trying to avoid that. Sometimes earlier on, he maybe tried too hard, and that could alienate a lot of listeners.

'Album' is a nice, tight album with some very 'hummable' riffs and tunes on it. The production was strong and the remastering lifts it even more. If people haven't listened to Pil before but are interested, this is a good album to get first. It has some of the poppier elements to it, but also some of Lydon's typical droning vocals, and word repetition that might stand you in good stead to go looking further back through their work.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Attempt but..., 13 Oct 2009
I was glad to get my hands on this and finished it quite quickly not wanting to put it down. It's a great effort and very evocative of the classic 'Fleming' Bond. My only complaint is the 'twist' at the end with the Bond Girl. It made me groan, and it really left me with a feeling of anti-climax.

The Bright Idea Deck: Breakthrough to Brilliance
The Bright Idea Deck: Breakthrough to Brilliance
by Mark McElroy
Edition: Cards

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for Tarot AND Brainstorming., 13 Oct 2009
After using the Rider-Waite deck for many years, I wanted to try something different. I saw this deck mentioned in a book by the same writer called 'Absolute Beginners Guide to Tarot' and was intrigued seeing the designs as being quite contemporary. After purchasing the cards and reading the accompanying book; it all seemed to make more sense and these are very expressive cards that tempt you to draw out your own interpretation rather than slavishly depending on referring to the book. They are a real pleasure to use.

Reading further on in the book I reached the section that suggests using the cards to brainstorm ideas, for - amongst other things, writing stories. Since I run table top Role Playing Games and need to write an incredible amount of material - I found using the cards great for bringing up ideas for plots by interpreting the images in the context of how they would fit in and refer to characters and situations that are already in play. This was a really worthwhile buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very, very good informative read., 22 April 2006
This review is from: England's Dreaming (Paperback)
This book must be at the top of the pile when it comes to the history of punk, and the Sex Pistols. There is a wealth of information here - and details of the socioeconomic background of the nation's history that inspired these angry young men (and women). This book was the main source of my dissertation on how the Sex Pistols changed the face of music. Invaluable.
