5.0 out of 5 stars A near perfect collection of classics, 23 Mar 2010
There's no denying it - Basil Rathbone is spot on as Holmes. Firstly, he looked the part - more than any other actor ever. But also the way he acted. The fast paced dialogue, the way he moved. He was Sharlock Holmes in these films.
And all the films are great, entertaining thrillers. Not all of them deserve to be called classics - but quite a few do. "The Hound of the Baskervilles", "The Scarlet Claw", "Sherlock Holmes Faces Death", "Terror by night" etc. are all in my mind, classics.
Sure, Nigel Bruce as Watson is far from what Doyle wrote. The Universal pictures (12 out of the 14 in this set) takes place in the 40's. The Conan Doyle storylines are mostly ignored by the screenwriters. So what? These are fun and entertaining films.

The box set is great. The box itself looks cool with lots of b/w pictures to enjoy. The extras are fun as well. Interesting production notes accompany each film, and on a handful of them there is an audio commentary track. Also included are some of the theatrical trailers.

One thing I want to complain about however is the lack of subtitles. There's not even English for hearing impaired, which is a pity. I have no problems with my hearing, but I usually like to have the English subtitles on so that I do not miss any of the dialogue. Especially when the films are as old as this and maybe the audio isn't always as good as of today. And sometimes it's hard to make sense out of all those English character actors wacky dialects.

But that's just a minor flaw. On the whole - a great box set.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great box set, although somewhat of a mixed bag..., 6 Mar 2010
The set is, on the whole, great. The sound and image of the films are great, the extras are fun. The casing looks cool.
But out of the five films, it's only the first one (The Invisible Man from 1933, with Claude Rains) that really is a classic. The `33 original is an excellent movie. Although not as chilling and eerie as Dracula, Bride of Frankenstein or Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde '32, it's doesn't fall too far behind. Rains is excellent in the title role.

The other films in the collection are somewhat of a mixed bag. They are all watchable, but of course none of them live up to the original. Vincent Price stars in the first secquel, The Invisible Man's Return, and it's an entertaining flick. The same goes for the Invisible Man's Revenge. These are the only ones of the sequels witch could be labeled "horror". Invisible Agent is a spy adventure fantasy, and Invisible Woman is a comedy.

But if you are classic horror-fan, pick this up. The original film is great and the sequels are entertaining as well. Although not the best Universal Legacy Collection box set (the best one is probably the Frankenstein set) it's definitely far from the worst (that's The Mummy set).

3.0 out of 5 stars The original is great, but don't except much from the sequels., 6 Mar 2010
The set is, on the whole, great. Really nothing to complain about. The sound and image of the films are great, the extras are fun. The casing looks cool.
However out of the five films, it's only the first one (The Mummy from 1932, with Boris Karloff) that really is worth watching. The `32 original is an excellent movie, and belongs up there with Dracula, Bride of Frankenstein and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde `32. The other films in the collection are, however, really disappointing. The Mummy's Hand is OK, but unfortunately the three sequels starring Lon Chaney Jr. are essentially the same boring film done three times over.
But one could look at this box set as sort of a special edition of the original Mummy, and view the sequels as some sort of bonus features. If you are classic horror-fan, pick this up. The original film is great, but don't except too much from the sequels. Out of all the Universal Monster Legacy Collection box sets (featuring Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, The Mummy, The Invisible Man and The Creature from the Black Lagoon) this is the weakest set of films.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great box set of classic monster flicks!, 26 Feb 2010
Included in this box set are the three Creature movies, on two discs. It's a nice trilogy. The original "Creature from the Black Lagoon" is probably the only one which can be rated as a "classic". But the two sequels "Revenge of the Creature" and "The Creature walks among us" are also a lot of fun, although not as good as the original. The extras are fun aswell.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of horror classics., 10 July 2009
Well, the title says it all really.
Great films, although I wouldn't call "The Mask of Fu Manchu" a horror film. It's more of an Indiana Jones-type adventure flick, although starring the great Boris Karloff. Very good film, don't get me wrong, but not "horror".

But "Mad Love" (great Peter Lorre), "The Devil-Doll" (surprisingly touching), "Dr X", "Return of Dr X" and "Mark fo the Vampire" (although a disappointing ending, and "mute" Lugosi) are all true horror classics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great collection of horror classics, 10 July 2009
For fans of horror, fans of Bela, fans of Karloff, fans of film or fans in general - this is it.

A great "box set" (with one double-sided disc) with Bela Lugosi's best Universal films (although without Dracula - THE Lugosi movie - which is available in the "Dracula Legacy Collection" box set).
The best ones are "The Raven", "The Black Cat" and "Murders in the Rue Morgue". But "Invisible Ray" and "Black Friday" are classics as well - although Lugosi has smaller parts in these two. All films but "MITRM" co-star Boris Karloff.

Classic films. This is the only Bela Lugosi collection you need. All other ones are low budget, crappy editions of his C-movies.

BUY!

4.0 out of 5 stars The best White Zombie you can get., 9 July 2009
The Roan Group's White Zombie... probably the best White Zombie in the world.
That about sums it up. This is as good as it gets when it comes to picture and sound quality. The picture is crisp and clear, and the sound is OK. A bit muddy sometimes. But since the original tapes are lost, this is it if you want to see one of horror's true classics.

Bela Lugosi shines as the evil zombie master in this voodoo and black magic classic. Maybe lacking in pace here and there, but every scene with Lugosi is pure (black) magic.

The extras are fun as well. Two short interview clips with Bela. Real gems.

4.0 out of 5 stars This should have been "Dracula pt. 2", 9 July 2009
This is one of Bela Lugosi's better films. I heard that this Columbia picture originally was intended to be a sequel to Universal's 1931 "Dracula", and if so - it shows.
Some great atmosphere and a decent plot. Lugosi is great, as always. He is Dracula in all but name.

This DVD has crystal clear picture and the sound is crisp. A great remaster. No extras to mention. But buy it. The film itself is up there with the Universal monster classics (better than any of the official Dracula sequels), and this DVD is a high quality edition.
