3.0 out of 5 stars For students of Scottish history only., 11 April 2013

This review is from: Macbeth: A True Story (Paperback)
I bought this book because of an interest in Shakespeare rather than in Scottish history. However, we are given what is clearly a detailed, well researched history of Sotland in the first millennium before we reach Macbeth himself. In fact the first half of the book is pre- Macbeth.

For Scottish history students, it's probably a 'must', but for those interested in the Bard it's a bit of a wrong turning.

Just what I needed. Digital readings are a bit small to read, though. Otherwise it's fine & does the job required of it.

Arrived promptly, too.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't use for soup, 11 April 2013
This blender has design flaw that make blending anything warm (not 'hot') very frustrating.

Its upside down style means that the liquid will leak if the rubber seal breaks, & I've had two that have perished in less than 6 months. I don't think the seal is dishwasher-proof.

I really have to turn the jug hard to fix it to the motor, then it is not easy to untwist.

The jugs are really too small for soup.

It may well be ok for smoothies, but certainly not for soup, I'm afraid.

The Caliban Shore: The Fate of the Grosvenor Castaways
The Caliban Shore: The Fate of the Grosvenor Castaways
Price: £6.02

5.0 out of 5 stars Gripping Stuff!, 31 Mar. 2013
Taylor tells the story & mysteries of 'Grosvenor' in a style that makes the book impossible to put down. He does not use melodrama or hyperbole - he doesn't need to. From the immediate background of the unfortunates to the legends that arose of the survival amongst the native tribes the narrative is clear and well researched.

Strongly recommended

4.0 out of 5 stars A Useful Historical, although personal, Record, 26 Mar. 2013
Bernard Smith has done those who have an interest in Anglo- Japanese relations, especially war time relations, a service. I have never given much thought to the UK's involvement in the Occupation of Japan post 1945, &, indeed, was not aware of any UK military involvement other than in the War Crimes process.

Smith has written without drama, but also without any historical insight into the conditions in and around Hiroshima, which is a pity. Perhaps some of his own personal history would have been of use, too (his background, what sort of a war did he have, etc). The Anti- Fraternization Law could have been expanded upon, too, but in general, this is another useful addition to the memories of the man in the street of the generation who fought in the Far East.

Easy to read.

Salmon has produced a very readable history of a battle of which many will be aware (I hope!), but fewer of us will have read much detail. Written after extensive interviews with those who were there, both private soldiers and officers, this is a story that had to be told. There are plenty of books about WWII written from a personal perspective, but not many about the Korea conflict.

Really enjoyable

4.0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag, 15 Jan. 2013

I was a little disappointed, I must admit, because some of the heroes had only a passing contact with Rosslyn Park, let alone each other. It's not a story of a 'Pals' team as it has been heralded.

However, it is a must for anyone interested in WW1 & is worth reading so we never forget

4.0 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any Japan-bound JET recruits, 15 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Baldwin's tales brought back so many memories of my (shorter) time in rural Japan & should be compulsory reading for anyone going to Japan to teach. He tells little of his classroom work (good), but tells of the friendship & fun he had when he emerged himself in Japanese life.

This is not a tourist's tale, but a witty diary of how he lived rural Japan.

Good stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Life 'John Grisham' story - stunning!, 15 Jan. 2013
Woodward says he was living the life of a Grisham character, & he certainly was. This book is gripping & the sort that cannot be put down I read it in one hit!

A principled man who did the right thing at huge personal cost. Well done to him.

His story is very damaging to Japanese business. Who would want to buy shares in Japanese companies after reading this?

2.0 out of 5 stars Predictable & shallow, 3 Jan. 2013

Maybe I set put not to like this because Archer is such a jerk, but I can't find anything good to say about it other than it skips along and is finished nice and quickly!

From about page 20, the plot was predictable with goodies and baddies laid out before us. No character is rounded, just black and white. The repetition is just there to pad out the nonsense and get another book put of it.

I won't bother with the rest of the series, thank you!
