5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant except for the title buy book not kindle, 28 Jun. 2014
Pulls together many thins to create a biographical history of the man. Some good maps and illustrations. I learnt lots of stuff ,about late rome, constantine III and the otherwise strange wanderings of Alarich. Fascinating insight into late roman bureaucracy and politics. The joke being that the rich landowners not providing men and money for the army AND reacting against using foederati are shortly after this book ends due to be swept away by a barbarian tide. Meanwhile Stilico who is roman really just of part vandal descent and oddly loyal to a weak emperor throughbloyalty to his greaterr father goes nobly to his death when he could have rebelled. I bought the kindle version first but then realised I needed the book proper for the maps and ease of reference

We'll I am glad I have it and read it. Its a phenomenal, detailed work of dedicated effort mainly u.sing all available bits of information in written sources on people to narrow down their possible dates and then statistical models of longevity and family size to further refine probable date ranges. This is then used to create realistic royal family trees out of the confused, contradictory and partly invented originals. Its fascinatng stuff but you need to be a student of the period not a casual reader and the work will really count if others use it as a base for further work. It also needs a summary of conclusions e.g gwrtheyrn is definitely not gildas's superbus tyrannus

4.0 out of 5 stars great overview 4 not 5 because of the price, 28 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very detailed review of current knowledge and leads to a very plausible model of how late roman britain may have evolved into small polities which eventually lead to the heptarchy. One caveat [and if the author or publisher had provided a contact I would not have to criticise in public). Is that the references to Bede V9 on p261 and IV 19 on p271 don't really support the points made but then I am using an oup translation!

5.0 out of 5 stars buy it as an intellectual exercise, 1 Jun. 2014

I came to this book through studying the Spanish muslim conquest and reconquista where a similar debate rages that current accepted history can't be right and a mention on qi of Illigs theory as dubious. I have also long been used to multiple debates on dates and facts in the anglo saxon chronicle to the point where you feel you know nothing and never can. So let me thank the author for providing an accessible summary in english.
Now let me give this book NO stars for
A. Repetition of things as facts in the hope you are convinced by the end
B. An uneccessary anti islam tone
C. Overly complex explanations. E.g if its just an assumtion that the numbers on islamic coins are AH dates that's enough. If Otto III and the then church authorities decided to declare a particular year as the year 1000 in order to clarify the undoubted date donfusion of the time then that is a sufficient explanation.
D. Dubious statements. Bedes use of age of grace dates is not anachronistic, he develops it through several of his works as a possibility and only in the last ones uses it an then not.much.
Let me give the book FIVE stars for
A. Inspiration on a fascinating possibility
B. Making sense at last of some historical conindrums
C. Use of multiple lines of evidence
For sure this one deserves to get more scholarly attention.
Am I convinced. No not yet but recall that most of our chronicles date from the tenth century or much later copies and that the problem of dates was a very hot topic at both ends of this missing period. And if you want more faint echoes get hold of the asc garmosway edition1953.67. (Chosen as its long befor this theory surfaces] and read how Bede claims in 725 that dec25 is falling into disus as year start yet was "revived" in another author about 1000. Or even the fax of the easter annal where the year preceeding 1000 was originally written 599 showing how easy scribal errors and chnages were

I think this will provide me with weeks of fun. Next stop our only pre 914 ASC the Parker

This review is from: 6009: El CID (Paperback)
A must for those building a. Christian wargames army of the time for inspiration and to make sure your army looks more like a norman style than hollywood medievals. Not as good as an osprey in detailing sources and references . Style is a bit over the top. Disappointing in its poor coverage of the various muslim groups of the time, one plate has them looking more like dark age visigoths (which might just be correct for poorer folk as historical info is hard to come by)

I really wanted this book and am pleased I have it although I had hoped for more text and analysis for which you could try the world of el cid by barton and fletcher or el cid by francisco javier pena perez. You will also need to understand written spanish. (Much easier than the spoken form !). But the real point of this book is the splendid pictures of jimeno. Snag there is that you can find quite a few of thse in the cheaper book from concord. So this one is for fans of jimeno's illustrations really

Works well. Arrived quick. I like the automatic start up/shutdown as you open the wallet. No it is not premium leather but its great for the price and I feel a need to make my smartphone a bit less conspicuous and desirable to unwanted eyes. If I could get into the habit of using it instead of my cash/credit card holder, it would more than compensate for the slight increase in phone weight

Triec about ten samples and this was the closest to the sort of thing you hear on balmy nights on holiday in spain. Just a daft whim really and you might be better of getting a full sound effects album than one track
