Whilst its location isn't as exotic as Jerusalem or Istanbul, this is more than compensated for by the streamlined pace and topical subject matter. Also, the decision to devote a large part of the story to Isobel's point of view and develop her character is a good one, especially given the news that a fourth novel, set in Nuremberg, is in the pipeline. I look forward to their continuing adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoughtful parable, 17 Jan. 2014

This novel echoed with me long after I had finished it, as it's a book that invites the reader to think long and hard, and not just about the obvious environmental issues it focuses on. Rather than getting hung up over the authenticity of such an island in today's world, I saw it as more of a construct, in the manner of Moby Dick or Billy Budd, where themes such as the essential nature of man, together with the place of innocence and goodness in our world, can be played out. On this level it works extremely well, and the reader is left contemplating the choices the narrator makes at each turn in the narrative.

A really enjoyable read, beautifully capturing the atmosphere of Istanbul, a city I last visited over 20 years ago. The perfect setting for a showdown between Islam and the west, it also introduces lots of current political themes. Some people have objected to the cutting between 1st and 3rd person narrative, but it wasn't a problem for me at all. I know the book's being published in a lot of different languages - note for publishers and future editions, I'd have found a map of the city at the front useful. The characters certainly have legs, looking forward to the sequels.
