The best book on preaching I have read in quite some time. The order in placing prayer first was crucial and I highly recommend this book for ministers and those training for Christian ministry.

I have to say that this is the best book I have read this year (as of May 2013). At times I was left speechless and stunned in thinking of what Christ did in his suffering for the unjust. Devotional, theological and humbling. An outstanding book!

The biography is better. This DVD leaves out alot of key facts about Bonhoeffer. The DVD Sophie Scholl is better to understand the times of Nazi Germany.

5.0 out of 5 stars God is a Communicative Being, 21 Dec 2012
This book is based on theological research conducted by the author before he became the church planting minister at Gateshead Presbyterian Church. This alone signals encouragement in that he is following in the "footsteps" of Edwards who was similarly committed to the church with a "single eye". We need pastor-theologians as frontline servants in the church of God.

The main theme of this book seeks to highlight an important aspect of Edwards' thought, and a cornerstone quote is: "The great and universal end of God's creating the world was to communicate himself. God is a communicative being" - Jonathan Edwards (p 11). This thought pervades the whole book and there is an attempt by Schweitzer to systematise the theology of Edwards around this theme.

The six chapters in this book magnify the communication of God and the starting point, rightly so, is the doctrine of God, the Trinity. The first chapter "The Communicative God" emphasises that the Triune God has communicated himself in Creation and Redemption and these are no minor keys in Edwardsean thought. As you read this book you cannot fail to be impressed by the breadth of analysis that Edwards treats every subject. At times you sense that Edwards is overly speculative and Schweitzer is not uncritical of him at certain points. Chapter 2, "Nature" highlights this capacity for wide-ranging thinking and Edwards had a passion for science because it reflected the Creator (p 41-43). In a western world that has been hijacked by Darwinian theory in every scientific field, a fresh approach to the sciences by Christians is desperately needed and not simply for apologetic reasons.

"Special Revelation" is the heading of the third chapter which is followed by "Scripture" in the next chapter. Sadly many Christians today seek for God's voice in all the wrong places. The corrosive influence of Charismatic enthusiasms bears testimony to this, with the abounding confusion that results from pursuing extra-biblical revelations. This book is refreshing in that magnifies that God is a communicative being and that this communication is found only in holy Scripture for redemption. How we need a recovery of this dynamic principle in the church.

The vision presented by Edwards on divine providence expands our horizons and chapter five handles "History" as a significant key to his thought. Schweitzer asserts that "Edwards was both a historian and a theologian of history" (p 141). However, this divine purpose is encapsulated in the final chapter "Edwards' Project" which ties the various threads together. An important section is the view that ministers are to ably and responsibly continue this project as heralds of the gospel to communicate the harmonious message of the Trinity to a depraved world (p 148-154).
This book is highly recommended. It is readable, fresh, challenging and needed in our secular and atheistic zeitgeist (spirit of our age).

An excellent new book on baptism. It is concise, pastoral, theological and enriching. Baptism is badly in need of being re-visited within British evangelicalism, so that a healthy and covenantal view of this sacrament is rightly understood and practiced.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Doctrine of the Church, 9 July 2011
A resurgence of Trinitarian interest gained momentum in the twentieth century and it is showing little sign of abating in the twenty-first century. This research endeavours to critically evaluate Miroslav Volf`s ecclesial model for `the church as the image of the Trinity', one which he presents with the English title, After Our Likeness. Volf proposes a social doctrine of the Trinity, one which is heavily influenced by the theological writings of Jürgen Moltmann, and he puts forward that this non-hierarchical Trinity should be reflected in the structures and theology of the church. If Volf is correct, then a radical reshaping is needed for the church to conform to an egalitarian pattern, one that is `after the likeness (Gen 1:26)' of an egalitarian God.

Our research begins by stating the theological influences that are pertinent to Volf`s thesis in After Our Likeness and the assumptions that undergird and inform his whole theological paradigm. An important theological excursus is offered to assess the theology of John Smyth, the first English Baptist, who is Volf`s representative figure for the location of his own ecclesiology, the Free Church. A critical analysis follows of Volf`s engagement with his two chosen dialogue partners that represent both Western and Eastern theological traditions: Joseph Ratzinger and John D. Zizioulas.

Volf presents five theses for `the church as the image of the Trinity' which could be labelled as Volf`s Free Church in the image of Volf`s revised doctrine of the Trinity. This monograph offers extensive insight into the contemporary debate on the doctrine of the Trinity but also it assesses many aspects of ecclesiology from both Eastern and Western perspectives.

The e-book errors have been amended by the publisher for the KINDLE Edition; thanks for letting us know!
