1.0 out of 5 stars Not a full size ball, 31 Jan 2012
This is not a full size basketball. You can't tell from the photo but it is around half the size of a real basketball, so of little use, other than to a small child.

3.0 out of 5 stars Long stark epic and unentertaining., 27 Sep 2007
This review is from: Sunshine [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
This is a good film if you are interested in Hungarian history. There is not what you could call a plot, just a story of 3 or 4 generations of one family and how they all faced difficulty choosing between their own morals and passions, and the zeitgeist of that era. I think you would really need to know a bit about European history to understand what is happening, as the story lasts 100 years. Some parts, particularly the 2 world wars are dealt with so quickly you could easily miss them and the marriages and affairs are likewise hurried and unexplored. There is no doubt that Hungary went through horrible times but, given the pace of the film and the severity of the characters, I couldn't muster much care or sympathy for the outcome. The cast and performances are mostly excellent, as are settings, costume & feeling of authenticity. I was glad I managed to sit through the entire 2 and 3/4 hours and found it interesting, in a documentary way, but I couldn't recommend this as entertaining to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great epic Sci-fi movie, 5 Dec 2005
If you like sci-fi and action films then you will really enjoy this. It is the sequel to Pitch Black but you don't need to have seen that to get this. It is wonderfully epic, large scale, the baddies are bad, the goodies are not too nice, even Dame Judy, the sci-fi is great, awesome spaceships and nice weapons BUT is is not at all bright happy and beautiful. This is a sinister world and the artistic design is rich. Rather like Alien has its own style this world is very distinctive, with influence from Roman and Art Nouveau style. The few bits that let it down I felt were the immature names for worlds & individuals and peoples. The dolly birds and cleavage also do seem to be thrown in for the sake of it, but you can't blame them for that too much.

1.0 out of 5 stars Rather disappointing, the magic is gone, 12 Sep 2005
This review is from: Ocean's Twelve [DVD] [2004] (DVD)
I think I can see what they were trying to do, there was some magical dialogue between Clooney & Pitt in Oceans11 which looked like it could have been improvised. There were some cool shots with a roving camera. There were a few quirky jumps in the plot timeline. All that worked in Oceans11. In Oceans12 it is like they decided to try and make the entire film with out script, timeline or tripods - and it comes out a mess. Add to that a plot that is not beleivable and you will only get to the end if you are lazy or have nothing better to do. The improvised dialouge still works for Pitt & Clooney but not for anyone else in the cast. And rolling out Bruce Willis and having Julia Roberts pretending to be herself severely failed to please the audience I was with. Sadly it isn't even good for the kids as there is little action and no great heist. If you liked Oceans11 - watch that again & not this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad simple action adventure, American Da Vinchi code, 19 May 2005
Think of a combination of Indiana Jones, Italian Job and Da Vinchi code and you have National Treasure. Quite fun and interesting. Kids aged 10 & over enjoyed it. Depth of story and characters is on a par with Lara Croft or James Bond, so a willingness to sit back and enjoy is requisite to enjoying it. Nick Cage is good, as are all the cast. Plot is adventurer Nick Cage and computer geek sidekick have to steal the Declaration Of Independance to protect it. Then they have to figure out endless clues on the treasure map to find hoardes of ancient treasure. Big glass of wine helped me enjoy this action adventure.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dark moody and scary, 21 Feb 2005
It is not fun, and it is really slow, but it does hold your attention and eventually delivers a good ending. Not a film for everyone. It is painfully dark both literally (curtains closed in every room) and in mood. There is a mystery concerning the mother & her 2 childen and the 3 house staff, but it is the trauma the family are suffering which is the meat of the film. This definately isn't a classic horror film, although it has all the ingredient. So it is original in some ways. The performances are great and the icy temper is maintained throughout. If you are temped then I would recomend it - switch the lights off, get comfy, let yourself get taken for the ride and reserve your judgements for afterwards.
