Under the Penitence
Under the Penitence
by Mary Gentle
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but included in Ilario, 13 Jan 2013
This review is from: Under the Penitence (Paperback)
I am a great fan of Gentle who I consider to be one of the most underrated sci fi authors working in the genre today. Golden Witchbreed was a masterpiece as was Ash. I am not quite as fond of her latest "The Black Opera" but it is still worth reading. Under the Penitence is a novella rather than a full scale book and is included in her later "Ilario" the Lion's Eye".

3.0 out of 5 stars Read the books instead, 7 Jun 2008
A well acted series but spoiled by the fact that a number of the episodes were not taken from Reginald Hill's brilliantly written books but created by the Tristams of the BBC. Why oh why try to reinvent the wheel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Liberate your music, 15 Mar 2008
Say goodbye to searching through your cds. Simply rip them losslessly and stream them with the Squeezebox to any amplifier and speakers; as long as the range is not more than 40 feet. Fidelity is as good as the original CD. One point of information, since the Squeezebox includes a very good Digital/Analog Converter (DAC) you will actually get better fidelity using the analog RCA connectors rather than the digital optical or coaxial connectors, unless you are feeding the signal into a high level DAC of your own.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not ready for prime time, 15 Mar 2008
Avoid this product until such time as they have got the bugs out. I have two receivers, one duet controller and an SB3. The SB3 works perfectly, which is why I "upgraded" to the Duet. The wireless range of the new receivers is much less than that of the SB3 but an even bigger problem is the instability of the wireless links. Every day I wonder whether the system will work today. If I switch off my computer I can then expect to spend an hour or so trying to reset the receivers, either the network will not be available, or the music library will not be found, or the receivers will not show up. What fun.

Good Morning, Midnight
Good Morning, Midnight
by Reginald Hill
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing end, 18 Feb 2008
This review is from: Good Morning, Midnight (Paperback)
As always with Hill a well written mystery that is well plotted for much of the time but alas the end just doesn't make a lot of sense. I fear that when the author gets too far afield he loses his way. Any time he writes about Americans he seems to lose his normally acute characterisation.

Amusing at first but rapidly becomes very boring, the same characters and jokes repeat in each episode.

4.0 out of 5 stars Is the series getting tired?, 22 Jan 2008
Nice to have all five series together, even if overpriced, but is it me or is the series getting a bit tired? Like so many good series they seem to be trying too hard as time goes on, with more and more farfetched plots; think the last series of Ally Macbeal for example.

As an aside, I don't expect realism from this sort of series but I would hope that MI5 has somewhat more than the skeleton staff portrayed here, with 5-6 people to save the country each week.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful series spoiled by a weak ending, 28 Nov 2007
The acting and writing in this series was marvelous with Sims giving, in my opinion, a better performance than in Life on Mars. However, the ending wimps out, all of the previous plotting had suggested a massive conspiracy but in the end the wrap up in unconvincing and spoils what had gone before.
