5.0 out of 5 stars Superb !, 8 Mar 2011
This is a modern dress production by the always interesting Robert Carsen. He shows that this great opera can be as relevant to today as it was when Verdi and Piave wrote it. Ciofi is stunning. Verdi said it should be performed in "contemporary" dress and how right he was. For an alternative to what you might be used to, do not hesitate. The Willy Decker production from Salzburg with Netrebko on DG is also superb, very high concept and another modern view. I have both.

5.0 out of 5 stars Iconoclastic and magnificent, 27 Nov 2010
Don't be put off by the dinosaurs. Katharina Wagner is a real iconoclast who dares to fail. The fact that she largely succeeds in what she is trying to do is to her and her festival's huge credit. Maybe there are too many ideas in this for its own good, but that is the only real criticism I can offer. If you believe that the theatre is a place where startling and innovative things should sometimes happen, then buy this. If you want a real shock to your system and a proof that operas can still shock and surprise and delight, then buy this now. No yawns, no sleeping, just drama. Great stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful !, 22 Aug 2010
I echo all the other reviews. At the end you feel as if you have lived through something deeply profound and been changed by it. If you are considering buying it, consider no longer, just buy it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Repeated viewing exposes inadequacies of first time director., 27 Jun 2010
I have become tired of this production after seeing it a few times. I think Gardiner's inexperience as a stage director becomes exposed on repeated viewings. There are moments of hiatus in the acting that become longer and longer each time you see them. The feeling that the cracks are growing deeper. The cast are too often left in mid air wondering what to do next. A proper director would have seen all this and done something about it. Also Amanda Roocroft has mannerisms which expose her lack of direction. There is a hand gesture she keeps using which a proper director would have pulled her up on in rehearsal. She also has a very limited set of expressions. All this matters for repeated watching. I also cannot decide if Eirean James really does keep laughing or whether it is part of the direction she has been given. The fact that I cannot tell whether it is real or not is a minus. Also she keeps wandering about the stage. Again a proper director would have noticed this. The two blokes carrying the drums are straight out of Benny Hill, by the way. I also agree with another review that the sets look very cheap.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it !!!!!!!, 18 Jun 2010
Loved it. A real antidote to all the tired old stagings you have ever seen before AND WHICH YOU CAN ALWAYS GO BACK TO. As another reviewer said, give it a go. It was meant to be what it is - iconoclastic and provocative. It is also done with terrific punch and enthusiasm by a great cast and also very well played and sung. Malin Hartelius with the riding crop - great !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Bayreuth production fleshed out in documentary., 1 Jun 2010
The previous reviewer could not be more wrong !!!! Katharina Wagner's Meistersinger production at Bayreuth was electrifying. (The actual production is available in full from Amazon Germany.) She proves again that Bayreuth is the crucible of new thinking in opera production and only the terminally stuck in the mud would think otherwise. This splendid documentary fleshes out what was an unforgettable (for all the RIGHT reasons) night in the theatre. More please.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, superb, superb ! Not to be missed !!!!, 11 Jan 2010
I had to write a very quick review to obliterate the apalling and silly review by Mr. Wyatt. This production directed by Christophper Marthaler is a true landmark is T&I prroduction history - challenging, worrying, prokoving, intelligent. The likes of Mr Wyatt bleat about "traditional" productions. They do not understand that great works like this need re-interpreting for each era and its concerns. Modern dress ? Of course. The issues raised by great works such as this make them revelant to all eras and we need to see them in as many ways as possible. Let directors dare to fail so that when they succeed, as here, we are enriched. DO NOT MISS THIS GREAT PRODUCTION.

1.0 out of 5 stars Old fashioned USAtrash production, 1 Sep 2009
This is the kind of opera production the Americans love. It's a lovingly recreated "traditional" version. Problem is its a "tradition" that goes back to about 1950. Costumes are like something off a chocolate box, a kind of faux authenticity. The women are done up to the nines but are too old for the parts they are playing. Rene Fleming is a handsome woman and a good singer but her acting runs the gamut from A to B. Her lipstick is a wonder to behold too. You half expect her to look into the audience and sing "Because I'm worth it." Levine makes the whole thing sound like Wagner. The orchestra is too bigand heavy, the string band sumptuous, completely unMozartian. The timps are thoroughly 19th century. You long for HIP sound, lighter, more attack. The kind Mozart would have recognized

There are some who would think this is in some way "authentic". It is not. It is like a painting mired with gunk and dust needing the cleaners in to get us back to what Mozart originally wanted and expected. But this is what a NY MET audience and their rich sponsors pay for. People who know the price of everything and the value of nothing. They are welcome to it. USAtrash exemplified.

Try the Rene Jacobs DVD. Young cast, ligher voices, original instruments, real sense of discovery and drama and excitement. No worries over "authenticity" of costumes or set. Superb.

1.0 out of 5 stars Jaw-droppingly awful blast from the past., 2 Nov 2008
This review is from: Verdi: Il Trovatore [DVD] (DVD)
This is how awful it used to be and illustrates what a very long way we have travelled in thirty years of opera production especially in Europe. (Americans will love it, of course. But then....) If you want to see actors too old for their parts, with minimal acting skills, with bows and curtseys and curtain calls after every scene breaking what little dramatic flow there might have been and, of course, absolutely NO director's concept whatsoever, then this is for you and you are welcome to it. This is the kind of opera production that people expected to see as late as 1978, now we want something more: actors who can act and look right for the characters they are portraying, directors who can direct and who are prepared to go beneath what is on the page even daring to fail, and a production that isn't stopped every few minutes so the principals can bow and curtsey to the audience's applause.

That was then, this is now. Wake up and smell the coffee. Go for the fabulous Bregenz Festival DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Director's Theatre at its best - Do not miss this !, 24 Oct 2008
This is an example of director's theatre at its very best. I have it as part of the huge Mozart 22 box set where it is one of the jewells in the crown. Director Stefan Herheim has thrown away the plot and created another. He doesn't give a toss for the conservatives and good on him for it. This is funny, dramatic, stimulating, provoking, annoying, unforgettable. It will keep you coming back again and again for a fix. There are plenty of other DVD versons of this opera for the faint of heart so they are well catered for. For the rest of us, we are grown up enough to relish an experience to be treasured.

Musically it is excellent. It has a young cast more than up to the demands of the score and a conductor in the front rank of Mozartians. Picture and sound quality are superb. It is like being there.

It caused a scandal when it first appeared onstage. So strap youself in (and down) for the ride of your Mozart life. Go on !! You know you want to !!!!
