4.0 out of 5 stars Judging by the number of cd's of Douglas Lilburn's compositions ..., 31 July 2014
This review is from: Home Is Where... (Audio CD)
Judging by the number of cd's of Douglas Lilburn's compositions, he must be popular at least in his home country. He deserves to have a wider listening public in the western world.. The first offering is "A Salute to Seven Poets", all New Zealanders I guess, not ever having heard of any of them. These "musical pictures" depict the pioneering experiences of European settlers in the colony. They attempt to show a sense of cultural identity. I think they largely succeed. The other two works by George Enescu and Boris Pigovat very vividly bring out the Cultural Identity of the respective composers. Enescu's transformation of Gypsy inspired ideas into western art form has succeeded very well. While Boris's Sonata for Viola and Piano brings out his Russian roots and his changed circumstances since emigrating to Israel. This is a very interesting disc of little known music in the U.K. The sound is first rate, on my equipment I could actually think I was there.

3.0 out of 5 stars Spain and Portugal map which falls apart after only a few days use!, 23 July 2014

I notice that there are a few errors on the roads of Northern Spain, having just returned from there. The paper is too thin and after only one weeks use it is already falling apart. Best try to get another companies product.

Ravel, Tchaikovsky & Rachmaninov Works for String Quartet
Ravel, Tchaikovsky & Rachmaninov Works for String Quartet

4.0 out of 5 stars The Puertas Quartet- an Accomplished body of Musicians, 23 July 2014
I had not heard of the Puertas before, but on the strength of this cd I find them to be thoroughly competent in all three works. The Tchaikovsky Quartet was to my ears a bit on the slow side to begin with but soon got going. A minor quibble but to compare with other performances this was noticeable. But perhaps they are correct and other quartets are wrong, Who knows? only Tchaikovsky.
The sleeve notes let this cd down. The photographs show all four of the quartet but do not tell you who they actually are. There is no mention description of the actual music. The back of the cover is printed Orange on a black background making it difficult to read except under strong light. I liked this cd and will play it again in my presentations to Recorded Music Groups..

Gabriel Faure Mirages & La Chanson d'Eve

5.0 out of 5 stars Unknown and strangely peaceful forgotten music, 24 May 2014
Charlotte de Rothschild and Adrian Farmer make a musically satisfying musical duo in this CD of rare songs by Gabriel Faure. Beautifully executed, this is music for the drawing room on a summer's evening. La Chanson d'Eve is almost if not unknown and we can thank these two artists for bringing them back this collection of late songs into circulation. The whole disc is a joy to listen to as the recorded sound leaves nothing to be desired. Recorded in the concert hall of NIMBUS whose acoustic properties are just perfect, this a cd for the connoisseur. The sleeve notes written by Adrian Farmer are just what is required to achieve a deeper understanding of this rare music. If this your interest, then buy it!

The Three Great Pianist Composers Vol.1 - Robert Schumann
The Three Great Pianist Composers Vol.1 - Robert Schumann
Price: 14.30

5.0 out of 5 stars Piano Bliss, 23 May 2014
What can I say? These performances rank at the very top of the tree. Angela is a first rate pianist and this disc of works by Robert Schumann can only help to bring pleasure to those that buy this CD.Carnival Op 9 is well represented in the catalogues along with the Arabesque. The ABEGG Variations along with the Piano Sonata in G Minor are very interesting and are new to me. Altogether a very enjoyable programme by a master musician. Buy It, you will not be disappointed!

The Lost Concerto of Pavel Pabst
The Lost Concerto of Pavel Pabst
Price: 14.31

4.0 out of 5 stars Lost Concerto?, 23 May 2014
This concerto is also issued on Cameo Classics CC9033CD coupled with the Jadassohn Concerto. Why has it been issued again?-Perhaps to emphasise that is a concerto that has been "lost" to listeners and musicians alike. It makes for pleasurable listening and is coupled with the Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini and Tchaikovsky's Hamlet Overture. these receive sympathetic performances by the Belarusian State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Marious Stravinsky. From the sleeve notes I see that he is currently assistant conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The sleeve notes on the second to last page, paragraph 3 is repeated on the last page, making for a slight confusion.
So you have a choice CD9033CD if you want the Jadassohn concerto or CC9021CD if you would like the Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky fill ups.

In any case Pavel Pabst's Piano concerto is well worth hearing although I think that the orchestration in the first movement portrays a learning curve- quickly learnt by the time the last two movements are reached.

Leopold Stokowski Live From The Proms
Leopold Stokowski Live From The Proms
Price: 14.89

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascination, Stupendous, Exciting., 22 May 2014
If you are a fan of Stokowski you will have to purchase this recording. It is in stereo as a bonus. He is energetic even extreme in his interpretation of this work considering his age when he set this to tape.. His extremity lies in the fast tempos and shaping of the music like no other conductor, bringing out instruments that I have not heard before, whether this is how Tchaikovsky wished us to hear this is another unanswered question! Undoubtedly Stokowski knows how to galvanise the orchestra and audiences alike.
I would not entirely agree with Robert Stumpff II (Leopold Stokowski Club of America) who has said that this is the finest performance of this symphony. Listen also to the 1961 recording by Evgeny Mravinsky and his Leningrad S.O. and the one by Maris Jansons and the Oslo P.O. for comparison.
A note about the track listing on the sleeve notes which are incorrect. There are five tracks, four for the four movements of the symphony and the fifth for the rehearsal track, which has a loud hum all through it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three World Premieres, 29 April 2014
All the works on this cd are premier collections and to my knowledge have never been recorded elsewhere. To start with Holbrookes Pantomine Suite. This composer here has written this piece in a lighter vein compared with some of his other works such as his ballets. I can associate this with works by two French composers e.g. Massenet and Delibes. If you like their music, you will like this piece.

Next is some music by Alexander Mackenzie called "La Belle Dame sans Merci" Written when he was in Florence. It was a commission by the Philharmonic Society. He went to Florence to recuperate after the pressure of teaching and performing in Edinburgh in the 1870's. Once recovered he finally took up residence on a semi permanent basis.
The inspiration for this music was taken from a poem by Keats of the same name. An altogether lovely work which deserves to be on the shelf of every collector of English Music.
Finally the Symphony by Sir Arthur Somervell, his only symphony called "Thalassa". This name refers to the Sea goddess of Greek mythology. Somervell gave each movement a title. Arlequin, Colombine, Pantalon and Clown.
Arlequin has the heading "...immortal sea". Colombine has the heading called "Elergy" and refers to the ill fated expedition to the South pole by Robert Falcon Scott in 1912. The third movement bears the following inscription "Magic casements looking on the foam of faery lands". The final movement has a quote from James Harris' The Daemon Lover.
Sir Arthur Somervell lived in the time of Sir Edward Elgar and appears that he was eclipsed by that great composer. Nevertheless this is music that I will play often and I can only hope that Cameo Classics will dig out some more compositions from the archives.
I am indebited to the conductor Michael Laus for using quotes from his sleeve notes on this CD. Highly Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great recorded performance by Angela Brownridge, 23 April 2014
Angela was a child prodigy, equally talented in composition, extemporisation and technically brilliant. She has recorded many works on other labels, but this recording by Cameo Classics is one of three (the others being by Chopin and Schumann) that show her artistry to perfection. This cd is one for collectors of fine piano performances. Her performances of the Annees De
Pelerinage, second year (Italy) and the Sonata in B Minor are representative of her pianistic ability. To quote another critic, she has been compared to Solomon, Rachmaninov, Cherkasky and Bolet. That is enough for the reader to go out and buy this CD. The recorded sound is also just perfect.
