3.0 out of 5 stars Blandest Grisham tale yet, 2 Aug 2011
This review is from: The Broker (Mass Market Paperback)
Aside from a bit of cat and mouse this story never really convinces.

Found the descriptions of coffee and coffee bars a little too obsessive after a while. Italy perhaps has more to offer.

Weaker story than most of Grishams, less convincingly told and consequently was less prepared to accept the ending as plausible.

Shame.

4.0 out of 5 stars Made for Gene Hackman, 2 Aug 2011
This review is from: Bleachers (Paperback)
From the moment I first read his description I couldn't shake Gene Hackman from the role of Coach.

Didn't think I'd enjoy this but was very surprised.

An absorbing tale of glories past, obsession, regret, growing old, dreams, binding friendship and reflection.

Doesn't sound great but works well.

As per all Grisham novels a movie in the making - slow paced, intelligent and engaging.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the better recent releases, 24 July 2011
Jake Gyllenhaal plays a Air Force Captain who wakes on a train not knowing where or who he is. 8 mintes later the train explodes and he wakes strapped in a chair in an apparent laboratory....

Not a classic, not one to watch again and therefore probably one to rent rather than buy but entertaining and an interesting concept.

Have to be honest, more I thought about it after the film the less I was able to explain the ending.

Rent and enjoy but don't expect it to completely make sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Comedy you've never heard of, 20 July 2011
Following the exploits of the Parks And Recreations team in a small City Hall in USA.

Series 1 started as an Office me to, genuinely funny but many parallels.

Series 2 comes into it's own with a vengance (series 3 builds on the momentum) the characters have grown, the situations are assured, Rob Lowe joins the cast but Lesley Knope is the undoubted star. Funny, daft and touching. Easily one of the best comedies around.

Check out Ron Swanson's Pyramid of Greatness - a map to success for us all. Brilliant cast, great characters.

Give it a chance. Top quality stuff.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Movie - ok for an evening, 20 July 2011
This review is from: Hall Pass [DVD] [2011] (DVD)
Genuinely funny moments, some very funny script and well acted. But there was a degree of introverted suspension I just couldn't shake.
Owen Wilson is a likeable as ever but it's impossible to accept that he would come across as anything other than creepy in the situations portrayed - there were just too many characters who's behaviour failed to convince. Well acted but the writers were asking too much.

What's with Merchants umbrella?

Just felt the creators had started with a premise, decided the ending and then worked backwards.
Worth a watch but unlikely to watch more than once.

4.0 out of 5 stars Yep, not the movie but great in its own right, 10 Jun 2011
Being a fan of Bladerunner I've been meaning to read this book for some time, finally got round to it.

Yes the film butchered the story but to me made something entirely different. I loved the book.

Incredibly inventive the characters were spot on and engaged from the start.

Well worth a read but be happy to accept a more thoughtful, complex world than Bladerunner.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not all its cracked up to be, 10 Jun 2011
Reads like a forced assignment - right I've got to write 10,000 words. I'll repeat myself alot, talk about my family, tales from the old days and a ton of stuff from the internet.

I've liked his work for some time but found little new here. I've read a couple of years on from publication but very little felt new.

Began to grate very quickly and every mention of just how great his wife and children were and just how fat, stupid and ridiculous everyone else was just wore thin.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty handy but not perfect, 26 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Spent ages looking through various formats of these multi chargers and this does do much of what it promises but not without reservations.

The Sony Ericsson plug does not fit our Sony Ericsson phone.

The Iphone works
The Blackberry works
The LG works
The Kindle plug for example will fit and does charge the device but it doesn't feel a smooth fit and creates an uneasy feeling that the socket is being mashed.

Not a bad product but didn't come across one any better.

1 charger instead of 3 - perfect.

The plugs fit well into the sockets, feel a decent quality and the charging is fine.

Well worth a few quid.

State of Fear
State of Fear

1.0 out of 5 stars Preacher man strikes, 13 May 2011
This review is from: State of Fear (Kindle Edition)
Typically the success of Crichton has come from taking a cutting edge aspect of science - genetics, nanotech, quantum mechanics etc and weaving it into a well researched 'what of' yarn.

State of fear felt like a series of repetitive lectures peppered with well meaning 'misinformed' characters who the needed several pages of lecture to explain environmental issues.

Yes, yes the point was made after a couple of chapters but Kenner keeps going on and on to anyone who will listed like the most excruciating, know it all bore you could meet.

Much better stories out there. Expected much better.
