5.0 out of 5 stars sublime & magical - so many gems included here, 17 May 2015

A short review of the 48 tracks (originally from 4 of Jackie's 60s LPs)...
'IN THE WIND': most here had actually originally been previously released on Jackie's 1963 LP 'JACKIE DESHANNON' and highlights are the aptly titled 'Blowin In The Wind', 'Walking Down The Line' (outstanding), 'Don't Think Twice', 'If I Had A Hammer' (brilliant), 'Needles & Pins', '500 Miles' (highlight), & 'Puff (The Magic Dragon)' (magical), 'Don't Turn Your Back On Me' (re-released track from Jackie's 3rd LP) i.e. most of them (are highlights that is) (9/10);
ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?: highlights are 'Music & Memories' (reminds of Supremes), 'Windows & Doors' (a slow start but then soars), 'You Don't Have To Say You Love Me' (not as good as Dusty but still good), 'To Wait For Love' (pretty), 'Call Me' (Petula did it better though)...generally though this LP is a little too much like The Supremes style & does not really suit Jackie's folk voice. (8/10)
'NEW IMAGE': this one is a little too MOR sophisticated jazz cocktail pop but it does contain three fine numbers in 'I'll Be Seeing You', 'Time' & 'Where Does The Sun Go' (8/10).
'WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE': this was in fact a compilation from the 60s and of the 12 songs then 2 are from 'THIS IS' including 'What The World Needs Now Is Love' itself? 1 is from 'IN THE WIND'; 5 from 'ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?'; 1 from 'NEW IMAGE'; 3 from 'FOR YOU'. Of the 12 tracks included on this 2CD then 8 are sublime including 'It's All In The Game' & 'Changin' My Mind' from 'FOR YOU'. (strange though to present the same 7 tracks twice on this 2CD compilation) (8/10)

Overall a 5 because there are just so many gems included here.

Bodies / My Own Mind [7" VINYL]
Bodies / My Own Mind [7" VINYL]
Price: £6.03

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful natural vibes, 17 May 2015
'Bodies' is a really beautiful effort "and life sets in motion what you wanted most". A natural vibe with no signs of being contrived. 'My Own Mind' is just as good with sharp guitar and plenty of harmonies "something had to break us up"...a brilliant 60s inspired track which sounds like the 31st Of February. Great vinyl & cover.

Ancient Tales
Ancient Tales

5.0 out of 5 stars an amazing medieval pop folk hard rock journey full of enchanting & beautiful moments, 15 May 2015
This review is from: Ancient Tales (MP3 Download)
This is a medieval pop folk rock fairy tale of sorts with some cheeky narrative throughout which describes an epic journey through a certain kingdom of Haddon in a tale of love under difficult circumstances...and so we are going to be going to a medieval enchanted folk land where Rick Wakeman's 'The Myths & Legends Of King Arthur...' meets Sandy Denny meets the brothers Grimm. The Fludes are seemingly a trio and have created a 24 track effort with 12 being short intersecting narrative pieces. Female vocalist Dawn has a powerful & beautiful vocal style as exemplified on tracks 'Touch Me (Farewell)' & 'We Are Soldiers'. Vocals drop on opening quasi-traditional Irish jig 'Heroes Live For Ever After'....but with a fine guitar percussion backdrop lifts things up. It straddles quite a number of musical styles as demonstrated by 'Burn Witch Burn' which is another blazing affair. Producer & vocalist Peter is obviously talented & his eloquent vocals impress on 'Rolling Fields'....plus also one of the star pieces here 'She's Your Woman'. Nice acoustic guitar on 17th track 'The Act' which is both a relaxing & riveting piece. 'Barricade' ignites with some brilliant guitar "can you hear me calling". Appreciate the cover image & the vinyl replica CD...also it is a fine clear production with some really nice moments. Haven't even mentioned 13th 'Rats & Ravens' with its brilliance of vocals, guitar, various percussion (really effective) & keyboards being perhaps the star track here "oh God your choir is dying". Going to play this one again. An amazing medieval pop folk hard rock journey full of enchanting & beautiful moments.

Alvvays [VINYL]
Alvvays [VINYL]
Price: £19.86

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent album amongst the top 10 of the last 12 months, 11 May 2015
This review is from: Alvvays [VINYL] (Vinyl)
Jingly jangly melodic indie pop rock in a similar sort of vein as Dum Dum Girls, Fear Of Men, Flowers plus with a little Chvrches flavor thrown in. Opens with probably the star track 'Adult Diversion' "if I should fall act as if it never happened"...great production & attractive sounds of nice drums/bass with darting guitar fueled up with some keyboards ....nice clear sound typically indie melodic pop. 'Archie Marry Me' a catchy piece with some cheeky lyrics...thoroughly pleasant. 'Ones Who Love You' floats us along on the sea of melancholy & lyrically clever "I'll be an astronaut but I won't be lost in space". 'Next Of Kin' continues the jingle jangle mood. 'Party Police' is beautiful with a fragile vocal by Molly & probably equal star track here "you don't have to leave you could just stay here with me". 'The Agency Group' more melancholic gentleness which pulls at the heartstrings...really great track. 'Dives' is a slighter affair. 'Atop A Cake' a cute vocal with all jangly guitars....pretty & vibrant indie pop "what's it got to do with me"...excellent. 'Red Planet' almost sung in a little girl lost voice but genuine tenderness shines forth "well i waited for you out here but that was just delusional". Really fine cover & pressing on what is an excellent album...certainly amongst the top 10 of the last 12 months.

Froot / Happy [7" vinyl]
Froot / Happy [7" vinyl]
Price: £5.83

4.0 out of 5 stars a brilliant catchy 80s disco affair but lacks a nice pic sleeve, 7 May 2015
This review is from: Froot / Happy [7" vinyl] (Vinyl)
'Froot' is a brilliant catchy 80s disco affair and the vocals & lyrics "don't you give me a reason that it is not" fit in really well. 'Happy' is reflective & with a sad vocal contradicts the title & makes also for an interesting moment. Marina will/has released six 7" coloured vinyl singles [each with a (sic) fruit scratch & sniff theme] being the 12 track album 'Froot' which you then place into a special box (also on sale). The actual quality of the purple vinyl pressing is great or grape but would have preferred this single with a really nice picture cover of the lady (rather than the plain purple sleeve even if it smells nice :o).

5.0 out of 5 stars proved for us to be the perfect alarm clock, 8 April 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very happy with this purchase. It's exactly what we wanted (a) not complicated (b) looks really great (aesthetic & an attractive appearance) (c) also a correct compact size (d) is easy to read & to change/alter hour/minute (e) easy to switch the alarm off (f) is run off the mains power (g) with both my wife & I being sensitive sleepers then one of our hesitations in first purchasing was the reporting of transformer hum/noise....agreed that there is some slight hum if you put your ear very close to the device but it proved not to be a nuisance at all for us (h) excellent packaging. After a long & careful search prior then this proved for us to be the perfect alarm clock & have no hesitations in recommending. [Just to note for those that live abroad then it comes with a standard UK plug & so you'll need to add a power plug adaptor.]

Sound Of A Woman [VINYL]
Sound Of A Woman [VINYL]
Price: £22.80

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent album of powerful soulful vocals on melodic chill techno dance, 7 April 2015
This review is from: Sound Of A Woman [VINYL] (Vinyl)
It was 'Hideaway' that first attracted to Kiesza plus also a friend's recommendation that she was wonderful live. Well it does open with the catchy 'Hideaway' & here is a lady with a powerful voice over an attractive disco/techno sound. 'No Enemiesz' captures with its energy "don't stop just give me some more"...."if we could all fall in love together". 'Losin' My Mind' a slow love & peace ballad....a nice gentle soul groove with some rap from Mick Jenkins. 'So Deep' is another soft ballad occasionally springing into life. 'Vietnam' electronica with a booming bass & K's powerful voice "this is why I give in"...."cause I can't use my unloaded heart against you"....fine pop sounds (don't know though why it is called 'Vietnam'?). 'Bad Thing' J.Lo-ish with some rap from Joey Bada$$. 'What Is Love' virtually K over piano on this cover of Haddaway's 1993 dance hit. 'Sound Of A Woman' is perhaps the strongest here...grandiose. 'The Love' catchy though a bit robotic. 10th in 'Piano' powerful soulful voice of K on a slow J.Lo-ish ballad.....a chill vibe & gentle groove "you you don't know you're setting off a fuse"..."so put your head on my piano". 'Giant In My Heart' with more attractive sounds "just give me back the moments that we made". 'Over Myself' dreamy up-tempo chill mood...K certainly puts her heart into proceedings. 'Cut Me Loose' is another day in the diary of Kiesza all breathless & ultra emotional with mainly piano "I'll be better on my own" & with this then you know that there is going to be a sequel. The main bulk of the songs were written by Kiesza & Rami Samir Afuni & produced by Afuni. An excellent album of powerful soulful vocals on melodic chill techno dance with some subtle splashes of interesting indie type ideas. [beautiful gatefold sleeve both outer & inner plus fine thick double vinyl pressings]

5.0 out of 5 stars lovely atmospheric sounds with sincerity & beauty, 2 April 2015
This review is from: Spirits [VINYL] (Vinyl)
Hailing from New Zealand FFR are the dream-folk duo of Brooke Singer and John Fitzgerald. Along with some excellent backing musicians (they're listed on the back of the sublime LP sleeve) they have created together a wonderful haunting atmospheric soundscape of an album with shades of Daughter, Tennis & Mt. Wolf. Opens with the wistful gentle 'Spirits' with its beautifully textured guitar & piano sound. This attractive mood continues with the ethereal 'Woke Up To A Storm' with shimmering violins "you woke up in a storm lashes of rain & thundering skies....I could see it in your eyes"....a beautiful number via a big bass drum thumping sound & a supreme plaintive vocal from Brooke. 'Cold' creates an engaging sort of Maori NZ feeling conjuring up pictures of beautiful rivers & cold lakes. 'Goat' with the extra vocals creates a fragile backdrop "keep up keep up...never lose sight"....brilliance. 'Lean' is rougher but with some majestic production touches including piano. 'Hard Luck Stories' which is closer to folk with as always some fine delicate guitar work (John). Next is the up-tempo 'Gone Gone Gone' with its soft thumping bass/drums & wistful melodic attractiveness "gone gone gone like the leaves on the old oak tree" great vocal on this stunning track with driving guitar & piano. 'Nursery Rhymes' a pleasant & delicate piece. 'The Other Side' further brilliance & perhaps the star track here "they're all running to the beach...to wash themselves clean". Final & 10th number is the soft gentle 'Seafarer' which comes as just a slight anticlimax after the previous brilliance. Overall lovely atmospheric sounds with sincerity & beauty.

(white vinyl) Brisk acoustic guitar strums with a gentle vocal from Jessica "I bend beneath the water I bend beneath the sea" is melodic & atmospheric. Different to the LP version being rougher rawer & perhaps better. Side B 'Born' is just as good... fine melodic sounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars great disco pop soul belter & red 7" vinyl pressing, 25 Mar. 2015

This review is from: Hideaway [7" VINYL] (Vinyl)
Great disco pop soul sound that straddles both Indie & Kylie/J.Lo fans alike. Begins with a highly emotional Lady K over a gentle synth before the big bass & high vibraphone sound enters. Lyrics are catchy even if nought special "you're just a hideaway, you're just a feeling...you let my heart escape, beyond the meaning". Beautiful cover artwork & red 7" vinyl pressing with flip side being a slightly different mix extended version. [Also check out the youtube music video as Kiesza beautifully dances around the streets of Brooklyn.]
