3.0 out of 5 stars very folksy Classic Driftwood, 13 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this only knowing a few tracks by him, its ok but never breaks sweat.
Need to be a real fan or at least a fan of US folk, very folksy type music, original version of Battle of New Orleans of course but thats available elsewhere without the other 5 CDS but price again is tremendous value for money but again it is very samey and you need to be a big fan, I'm ambivalent to it to be fair but it is unoffensive for the price, probably never get played again but if you like this stuff go for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Now Ladies..., 13 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Once again a great set, price and content are Value for money.
Mainly drawn from the fifties and early sixties, some great sound quality some not so good, One or two from vinyl i think!
The patsy montana stuff (and carter family) a little out of kilter with the rest of the collection on both sound quality and style (being from the 20's and 30's) sort of spoiled it for me but hey I'm being picky.
the content has lots of "answer records" i.e lost to a geisha girl (answer to Geisha girl-Hank Locklin (and others)) and "I let the stars get in my eyes" etc....
but some good uptempo rockabilly from Wanda Jackson and Rose Maddox, great uptempo Patsy Cline, all available elsewhere but fit nicely in here, as with all of these box sets there are some obscurities but not too many on these.
it is nice to hear Jean Shepard, Kitty Wells and Goldie Hill and some good Skeeter Davis.
also as a "bonus" one or two duets, Marvin and Patty Rainwater(siblings), Jean Shepard and Ferlin Husky, good stuff too
if you like country ladies go buy! should not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUN Arise, 10 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If I can still say that (don't know how the court case is going!)
I have almost very track on this set on various CD's but to listen in Chronological order was interesting to say the least, really enjoyed both CD's, thought I was all "sun'd out" but no! re-discovered my enjoyment for the Sam sound, sorry Sun. bloke obviously had vision but was slightly unhinged but then aren't all geniuses?
You would think that Herr Weiss (Bear Family) would start to issue the box sets in single CD's to prevent PD labels diluting his market but as usual I expect he will ignore any call to do that! obviously more Euro's than sense even with the current exchange rate.
really great R&B, Rockabilly and Country took me back to the early 70's when I used to play each Charley release almost until they wore out! Fantastic quality of Price and sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good ole Ray, 10 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Ray is Jimmie Skinner Mad but them so am I, this is a good set and other than the Bear Family stuff (gotta spend a fortune or get a mortgage one day and buy the box set) there is not much out there on Jimmie who remains very much under rated.
Mr Campi gives Jimmie's stuff the treatment and it works for me! (also rate the originals).

5.0 out of 5 stars cracking set, 10 Jun 2014

Great set and a brilliant price, apparently cross over artists in reverse by the time we get to disc 5 and 6, that is mainstream artists selling into the R&B charts, can only explain the last two CDS, Haven't read the notes yet, looking forward to that once i get the CD out of the car!

4.0 out of 5 stars "welllllll I woke up this mornin'... ", 10 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a good set if you like yer blues, differing recording quality reflects the original recorded sound techniques but considering I bought this on a whim (usually go for much more rockin' sound) I really enjoyed it, driving along in the car jus' chillin'

good stuff and value as usual

5.0 out of 5 stars Rough and rowdy, down and dirty more like, 4 Feb 2014

Great collection for the money!

Very roots of rock i would say, in fact the last CD has a collection of "original" cuts of well known tracks more popular by other artists.
this goes from 1930's to 50's and covers what i would call edgy jazz to full blown R&B. its really good up tempo stuff, I defy to listen and stop your feet moving or toes tapping.
couple of tracks dodgy sound but two from 200 hey, what do you want for a tenner? sound quality on head phones was really good. there's a couple of obscure acts (as is the way with these releases) but they do not detract from another great set, a very commercial version of a Ruth Brown number Mama etc..(gotta feeling its on one of there other sets too), why not the original cut but that would be my only real criticism, as I said £10.00.... surprisingly a couple of Milton Brown tracks, one pure Western Swing but the other holds up well with the others.
cant wait to stick it in the car and have a real good play though with no interference...(wife saying "its loud", only way to play this stuff)
Enjoy if you like good solid R&B (proper stuff that is)
