5.0 out of 5 stars Japanese Classic Transfers Well To Disc., 27 Sep 2002
This review is from: Kagemusha [1980] [DVD] (DVD)
A long but fascinating Japanese historical epic that looks and sounds fine on DVD. The only minor quibble refers to the English subtitles which are only available as a Hard Of Hearing version. This means that indications such as (laughs) or (moans) appear on the screen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Aspect Ratio Spoils A Excellent Film., 27 Sep 2002
This review is from: Gosford Park [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
I saw this film at the cinema and was so impressed I bought the DVD as soon as it was available. Unfortunately the screen ratio used on the disc (1.78:1) does not match the cinema release (2.35:1). Either there is more height on the disc version or less width. While this is not as bad as a 4:3 transfer it does spoil what would otherwise be a five star disc.

4.0 out of 5 stars Introducing Dorothy Dandridge., 31 Aug 2002
That was the original title of this made for HBO movie and it was shown under that title on UK cable TV. But the company that released the film as a rental video title decided to change it and it now comes to Region 2 DVD as Face Of An Angel. Although to be fair the phrase is used in the dialogue at one point. The film tells the somewhat tragic story of the first black actress to be nominated for an Academy Award (in a leading role). There are quite a few musical numbers included to stop the story becoming too downbeat and in some ways the film resembles the glossy entertainment of the period that is being recreated here.
And of course there's Hallie Berry who went on to win that elusive Academy Award not that much later. And her you get to see her play a character with depth unlike it the awful Swordfish.Highly repeatable.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Large Portion Of Cheese In Unfunny British Comedy., 22 Aug 2002
This review is from: Spanish Fly [DVD] (DVD)
If you are drawn to this film by the cast , you could regret it.
This came at the tail end of a cycle of British comedies which ran from the fifties into the seventies but by this time was looking very tired rather like its stars Leslie Phillips and Terry Thomas. The makers tried to dress up the old formula by making it slightly raunchier than before , but unfortunately the film comes over as cheap and not very funny.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best In 50's Monster Movies., 13 Aug 2002
Before making his Sinbad movies and Jason And The Argonauts , Ray Harryhausen created the visual effects for a number of black and white monster pictures , the last of which was Twenty Million Miles To Earth. Most of the other elements of the movie are rather quaint , but the stop motion animation used for the creature from Venus still looks amazing today. In addition to the feature , the disc also contains a detailed one hour documentary on the whole of Harryhausen's career , a Dynamation promotional short from the time of The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (both of these have appeared on previous releases ) and the original theatrical trailer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Unpublicised Gem., 11 Aug 2002
This review is from: The Trial [DVD] (DVD)
Co-produced by BBC films , another little known film creeps out on DVD.Not as challenging as the Orson Welles film but well cast and photographed on Czech locations to make another unusual addition to your collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Two Exploitation Films For The Price Of One, 10 Aug 2002
Red Scorpion is an above average exploitation film set in Africa with Dolph Lundgren playing a Russian mercenary.Frankenhooker is from the maker of the Basket Case series with a slightly more expensive look. The disc has one film on each side of the disc. Also includes a selection of cheesy trailers for other low budget films of the era for a value for money package.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neglected Musical Makes Entertaining Disc., 10 Aug 2002
Based on the Broadway and West End hit musical ( with a few new songs added for the film ) ,this adaptation was not widely liked at the time. But now that Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton are no longer ubiquitous , its easy to see that there are not many film musicals nowadays. As the movie is still a tiny bit raunchy it does not show on TV all that often. And you need the full widescreen format to see Burt and Dolly at the same time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Disaster Movie Looks Great In Widescreen, 10 Aug 2002
This review is from: Airport [DVD] (DVD)
The film that started the disaster movie cycle of the 1970's , with a terrific all star cast in the thrilling widescreen process of Todd AO.Based on the bestselling novel by Arthur Hailey , this is one of those films that has a outstanding level of cheesiness thanks to it being satirised in Airplane and elsewhere and includes such amazing lines of dialogue of "You'll kill yourself for nothing if you explode that bomb".
The widescreen transfer makes sure that the split scrren shots work properly and restores several gags where you need to see the full width of the screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Box Set For FILM Collectors, 8 Aug 2002
Most box sets of dvds usually contain a couple of dozen TV episodes from three or four years ago. But this set has 10 (count them) feature films from the 50's and what's more they have been painstakingly restored to look as good as new.
It's quite a revelation to watch Marilyn on these discs instead of the faded cropped versions on TV. The vintage advertising materials and other extras make you wish the other studios would prepare box sets of the films of other great stars of the past.
