This is an interesting album by Francis Dunnery as the songs are mainly from his brother's old 70s band and so pays homage to him as a brother and guitarist who sadly passed away a few years ago. The first track is written by Francis and is great and like everything (mostly) on the album is electric guitar, bass and drums and so there is a feeling of a raw band playing which is a refreshing change from the mainly acoustic output, albeit brilliant, from his albums previously. On first listen the songs do tend to sound very similar, mainly down to the lack of over-production but as with so many great albums repeated listens pay off and there are some great melodies that start to come to the fore. The musicianship is great at you would expect and its good to hear him letting rip on the guitar which will please many fans. Some of the songs remindme of early Rush and Genesis in places which is no surprise given his brother's band were around at the sametime and Francis is certainly a big fan of Genesis at least. I recommend this album highly but don't expect to fall in love with it immediatley but all good things..........

Its very hard to pick a favourite Divine Comedy album but if push comes to shove i think this is it. The songs are simply amazing, from the humour of To Die a Virgin, the brilliance of Diva Lady and the move you to tears A Lady of a Certain Age. Neil Hannon is just an incredible talent both musically and lyrically and this is him at his best-that said Absent Friends, Bang Goes the Knighthood and many more are also fantastic. Don't delay, buy today.

5.0 out of 5 stars what can you say............., 1 July 2011
This review is from: Revolver (Audio CD)
This album is probably one of the Beatles best examples of amazing diverse songwriting which paved the way for so many to come. McCartney's genius is allover this album and Lennon's not bad either! Harrison's songs are also great with Taxman a complete classic. Of course, if you're a reader of Q magazine then of course its not quite as good as OK Computer (tossers...) but it ain't bad! When you look at the collection of songs here from Got to Get You Into My Life, I'm Only Sleeping, For No One, Eleanor Rigby, Here There and Everywhere and to top it all off, Tomorrow Never Knows, it's just incredible. Even now, some 40 yrs later, when you look at the quality of the songs the Beatles packed into 7 years there hasn't been any band since who have come close to their level of songwriting, let alone all the other new ground they broke. So go on, OK Computer is fine Q writers but lets not be silly now-compare the songwriting here and need i say more.......

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic album, ignore the few numptys on here, 18 Jun. 2011

This is one of the few albums that is absolutely great from top to bottom, which is a rarity these days. The songs draw you in over time and i must admit i wasn't sure when i first listened to it but if you have a liking for all things slightly unconventional, this is for you. I always admire artists who can incorporate odd time signatures and changes etc whilst also keeping the music melodic and EE do this brilliantly. I think prog gets banded about far too liberally these days (Radiohead?!?!?) but it may appeal to fans of the genre but not at the exclusion of fans of good indie/pop. Top songwriting throughout and nice production-ok, the lyrics are a little all over the place but all in all the album works. If it helps i also rate vampire weekend, mgmt, foals, friendly fires etc as well as xtc and yes who have been referenced in these reviews but don't be put off if you don't like the references.

Sorry to be so out of step with the majority of reviews for this album but as someone who's been listening to them from pretty much the start i just don't get it with this album. Its fine, its ok but it IS NOT great. I agree with one of the other reviewrs on here who suspects the positive reviews come mainly from people who got into the cure with this album. At the time the cure had reached super stadium size along with Depeche Mode and so they were at a commercial peak but they were not at a creative one! The songs all sound like they were worked out in the rehersal room with most of them made up of a repetitive riff with a keyboard melody line over the top. I think it appeals to the doom merchants as you can imagine being a spotty student listening to it in your darkened bedroom etc. Its not a bad album and there are some good moments, mainly towards the end of the album but seriously none of the songs would make it into my top 10 cure tracks. The songs individually are just not that strong-they're ok. The new release is a nice package and its worth buying especially if you like Faith, Pornography and the later Bloodflowers but i think all 3 of those albums are stronger song by song than Disintegration.

Before buying this album i read quite a lot of negative reviews on these pages and found the album often derided in other cure album reviews like " its not their best but its not as bad as wild mood swings" etc. Well, i went ahead and bought the album and whilst it may not be the best album by the cure it is definetly a very fine album indeed. The thing is cure fans are one of three types-they either prefer the dark side like Pornography and Disintegration, they like the lighter side like Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me and Head on the Door or they like a bit of both, like me. Well WMS is definetly the popier side of the cure and all the more interesting for it. The cure have always been great at doing good pop songs from boys don't cry, the caterpillar, close to me and so on. WMS is very varied and i think that puts the disintegration fans off as it is a bit all over the place but for me its far more interesting a listen. Importantly though it has some brilliant songs and really just a couple of ok songs-tracks like The 13th and Mint Car which were singles of course are fab and Jupiter Crash, Round and Round and Round and the lovely Treasure are some of the cure's best work. Now i know i'm speaking out of turn here but being of a certain age i lost interest in the darker side of the cure sometime after Pornography and so whilst i can appreciate Disintegration, in my opinion song for song it is far from their best album. Lyrically its good and probably its the weakest side of WMS but i can live with that. So if you enjoy the pop genius of Mr Smith and co please don't be put off this album because it deserves much higher praise than it gets on here-buy it and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Ok-first of all if the below reviewer is correct re royalties then thats bad news for the band but surprising also as its been released by esoteric who are the guys behind atomhenge who have been re-releasing all the Hawkwind stuff so seems strange but sad if true.
However, to review this album for its quality then this is absolutely a must for fans of the band or anyone interested in the genre. It contains some of their best songs and the live versions of 70s youth and end of the beginning are far better than the studio versions. You also get the amazing surgeons knife and think for yourself which are outstanding and as with many here and now songs not otherwise available. In my opinion this along with what you see is what you are and coaxed out of oxford are the bands best output-the studio recordings simply don't do them justice. So do not hesitate and buy this-it maybe be reluctantly re the benefit to the band but it truely is a brilliant album.

3.0 out of 5 stars oh bugger, 24 May 2010

Here we go-i love antidotes and this is nothing like it but i should get over it and open my mind blah blah blah. I bought antidotes at the sametime as i bought friendly fires album and i love them both. But one thing that really stands out when you listen to those 2 albums is that friendly fires sounds much bigger on the production whereas antidotes sounds more raw-which i like. i also like the vocals on the first album-they stand out like Keles from bloc partys silent alarm as they don't sound like everybody elses-which i like. Unfortunaltely, like a weekend in the city by bloc party, total life forever has done away with that raw, exciting edge and therefore loses the band's originalality which is a shame. The album is still good in its own right though and i'm still a fan but i would have preferred different production as now the album has to stand up on the merit of the songs only which are a little mixed throughout. Its worth getting but i think, perhaps a little like bloc party again with intimacy, the next album should be more progressive like antidotes was, without having to sound like it. still a really good band but i reckon and hope theres better to come.

This album just gets better and better with every listen and its not often these days you put an album on for the first time and it gets you. I've heard them talked about in the same company as fleet foxes which is sort of understandable but i would have to say as much as i like the fleet foxes i think this album is even better. I haven't given it 5 stars because i think you have to leave some room for a little improvement but this is seriously one of the best albums i've heard so far this year.
