5.0 out of 5 stars Original Horror, 16 May 2010
This review is from: Martyrs [DVD] (DVD)
It's hard to say that I enjoyed this film, considering its content but that is how you'd describe it if it were a comedy. Rather than enjoy, perhaps challenged would be a better way to describe how you are when watching it. Rather than what has become standard fare in many modern day horror films, this one doesn't rely on being a gore-fest and indeed if that is what you are looking for primarily then you are likely to be disappointed.

It takes the story of a young girl, abducted and tortured, as she runs down a road having escaped before she is transferred to a children's home and is befriended by another girl their. The story gradually unfolds as it transfers forward to the current with the girls now grown up and still seemingly searching for answers.

Highly original, full of suspense and challenging to watch - highly recommended.

This is the excellent first single off their second album, Volume Two, the link to which also (at the time of writing anyway) features the video to this single.

The second track is a cover of the Ronettes (and perhaps more famously) Beach Boys hit. Again very well done.

Both are fantastic pop songs that will leave you with a sunny disposition after listening to them

By comparing the South American Ishkanani Indians with the rich Osbourne clan, this film shows that each within its own small kingdom acts very similarly despite the supposed difference in development. It is a very engrossing, if at times uncomfortable film to watch; one that definitely warrants its 15 certificate for its subject matter.

The acting is first rate by all the main characters; especially Donald Sutherland and Chris Evans, the former as the head of the clan and grandfather to Evans.

Unfortunately there are no extras though.

Highly recommended.

The Girl Who Played With Fire (Millennium Trilogy)
The Girl Who Played With Fire (Millennium Trilogy)
by Stieg Larsson
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Millenium Trilogy, Part 2, 23 April 2010
The Girl Who Played With Fire is the second part of Stieg Larsson's Millenium Trilogy and takes up the story around a year after the first book finishes. It swaps tack from the investigation of the missing Harriet Vanger into the murder of a journalist and his partner with Lisbeth Salander being implicated as the murderer.

This book could be read and enjoyed without reading the first book but you would lose out on some of the background and insights into the characters personalities. The same cannot be said of the third as it is very much a straight carry on of this book.

As with the first book, the transation into English isn't perfect but it doesn't detract too much from the suspense.

Overall, a very engrossing read that should be essential for anybody who enjoys mysteries and crime thrillers.

About A Boy
About A Boy
by Nick Hornby
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars About A Boy, 21 April 2010
This review is from: About A Boy (Paperback)
I really enjoyed About A Boy; a fantastic character study of the lives of two very different people. Will, a mid-thirties single man with only himself to think or care about with his compartmentalised but ultimately empty life. Marcus, as twelve year old boy coping with a depressive, suicidal mother while trying to navigate his way through school.

Bringing these characters together, along with all their baggage and letting them interact made for an excellent story that is both very funny and hauntingly accurate in terms of bringing the players to life.

Yes Man [DVD] [2008]
Yes Man [DVD] [2008]
Dvd ~ Jim Carrey
Price: £1.35

4.0 out of 5 stars Positive Thinking, 16 April 2010
This review is from: Yes Man [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
The idea behind this film that positive thinking will get you great things out of life rather than nothing if you hide yourself away from life's experiences is a great way to bring about all sorts of funny things for this film and it works really well. Jim Carrey does his usual over the top comedic performance to great effect to leave you laughing the whole way through. It's well worth watching because of this.

However, because it is Jim Carrey doing comedy, it does leave the rest of the cast in the shadows and playing bit parts to his. The one exception is Terence Stamp who has the presence to outshine him. I just wonder if Jim Carrey had played it down just a little whether the likes of Bradley Cooper and Zooey Deschanel, both talented comedy actors in their own right, could have been brought forward and made it even funnier.

The extras here are very good, with all the music videos in full, plus a making of which again is mainly Jim Carrey messing about - the bungie jumping part is worth watching though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Volume Two, 15 April 2010
This review is from: Volume Two (Audio CD)
I loved their first Album, Volume One, so was excited to see that their second album was coming out. I wasn't disappointed. This one is even better than the first.

They have gained in confidence and the songs are stronger, mixing the same pop, country and rhythm and blues influences to great effect. Zooey Deschanel's voice is also even better and takes the music to another level.

Highly recommended music that will leave you feeling warm and happy.

(500) Days of Summer [DVD] [2009]

4.0 out of 5 stars A Story About Love, 15 April 2010
As the cover says, this is a story about love; not a love story. I loved the unpredictability that this introduced to the film as the usual romantic comedy formula isn't used here.

The characters are well cast and the story fun to watch and very funny. My only reservation would be that if you are looking for a romantic comedy you may not like how it ends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Performance Book, 14 April 2010
First of all a disclosure as some of the other reviewers have omitted to mention this: I have met with both Christian and Justin and know them from a business perspective. They are both SQL Server experts and very qualified to write this book.

The book covers two main areas: internal architecture and performance tuning. The former concentrated on the parts of the internals that are most relevant to the latter (so if you need to see all the specifics on the internals I would still recommend Kalen Delany's book: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Internals (Pro - Developer) as this is still the best overall book in this area. The section on hardware is particularly good though and I haven't seen it covered as well elsewhere.

The second half of the book covers troubleshooting and performance tuning. It gives very good coverage of this looking at it from all angles. It is certainly a very good place to start from and by doing this you will be given the information you need to resolve problems. Where I felt that it was slightly weaker was in the next step of actually resolving those issues; though it is stll overall a very good reference.

Overall, a highly recommended book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quirky Comedy, 14 April 2010

This review is from: Gigantic [DVD] (DVD)
I really enjoyed this quirky indie comedy about a bed salesman (played by Paul Dano) who meets a customer (Zooey Deschanel) and falls in love with her while he is trying to adopt a Chinese baby. There are also various side stories going on to add to the fun, some of which make no sense whatsoever to the film's plot and are left unexplained. There are no extras at all on the disc so it is a little disappointing that you don't find out anything extra about what they were trying to convey.

Zooey Deschanel plays her usual kookie girl that is supposed to turn the life of the male lead upside down; but this time Paul Dano is so focused on his own goals that she is left as the one looking for love.

A very enjoyable comedy.
