3.0 out of 5 stars COMPROMISED BBC "TRIPODS" DISCS, 23 Dec 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Amazon describe these four DVDs as "THE COMPLETE SERIES 1 & 2 ", but neglects to warn buyers that when the material on these discs runs out viewers are left high and dry wondering what happens next. What the heck happened to episode 13 ? In fact the BBC decided to abandon a whole planned Series Three because (when first released) ratings were insufficient to warrent further expense. As the years went by the main actors aged so they could not continue to play their original roles convincingly, so it became eventually impossible to rectify the BBC's dreadful mistake.

As it stands the discs contain good acting with outstanding effects and graphics whenever the Triffids are at hand, But this leaves large periods in between which are relatively boring with the BBC's period drama team simply showing off their usual almost-irrelevant talents. Perhaps some drastic cutting in the early stages could have allowed the BBC to finish the project properly.

Buyers might overcome their disappointment by getting THE HITCH-HIKERS GUIDE TO THE GALAXY, or buy the books to read what the author intended.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST EVER PETER PAN, 20 Oct 2010

This review is from: Peter Pan [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
This Peter Pan is the finest DVD in my collection. It thoroughly eclipses the Disney version (good though this is) due to the truly amazing oerformance of Jeremy Sumpter as Peter, together with incredible computer graphics.
No other actor could look so right, with his cheeky mischievous grin and just a hint of sadness as he leaves Wendy at the end. Of course I believe in Fairies - they made this film didn't they?

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL DISC, 19 Oct 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This wonderful performance is acted and sung before an audience in the Munich Opera House. It is produced for TV by specialist Brian Large.
Contrary to the Amazon information, the disc is playable in ALL countries using PAL encoding.
The Thunder and Lightnihg Polka (item 21) towards the end of act two is danced with amazingly involved choreography and ends up with the entire company collapsing on stage. Banish Winter gloom with this marvellous flawless tonic !

Dear Ladies (Hinge & Bracket) : Complete BBC Series 2 [DVD]

5.0 out of 5 stars MAJOR UK TALENT AT THEIR PINNACLE, 17 Oct 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
"Hinge and Bracket" was a theatre musical double act played by Gearge logan and Patrick Fyffe in the eighties and nineties. This BBC DVD captures them at their best, with "Dr Evadne Hinge" an excellent pianist and "Dame Hilda Bracket" singing with a miraculous voice which put many a wagnerian soprano to shame.

The disc finishes with a real concert at the Manchester Royal College of Music with Principal Eve Turner in attendance.

Fans who saw the pair on stage will probably have this disc already, but others may be wary of a "drag act". Make no mistake this is an in-depth study of two ageing musical performers including their bickering, arguments and underlying respect and love for each other. It is a gem of British Theatre.

5.0 out of 5 stars JEWEL OF THE SIXTIES, 17 Oct 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In the fifties and sixties a volcano of invention and creativity erupted as hunanity strove to build a new world among the rubble of WWII. Today's youngsters can catch a glimpse of the dawn of this new era by way of this CD.

Here is someone who could SWEETLY sing and compose songs which reminded everyone of a time when Earth was a GENTLER place, where women didn't paint themselves to look like whores, and where men no longer need the pretence of being muscle-bound butch supermen.

This jewel of a CD will retain its sparkling glitter and forever eclipse today's brash UGLY generation.

5.0 out of 5 stars VINTAGE TRACKS, 9 Oct 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Most Of The Animals (Audio CD)
I remember dancing to these wonderful tracks decades ago, but now that I'm less wiggly I can now LISTEN to how remarkably Eric Burdon sings and captures the sheer GUTS of the rock n Roll era - which unfortunately gave way to the robotic DISCO beat for unfortunate mechanical teenage robots. Even more astonishing is the fantastic playing and arranging by an unnamed PIANIST. The whole disc far surpasses my previous favourite FATS DOMINO.

5.0 out of 5 stars A WORTHY CD LEGACY, 9 Oct 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Definitive Monkees (Audio CD)
After being disappointed in three now-middle-aged Monkees desperately trying to pretend on DVD that they are still teenagers, I felt glad I had also ordered these CD tracks, recorded when they actually WERE young. The singing and arrangements are as wonderful as I had remembered them. So buy the disc, lay back and let sexy Davy and the rest penetrate deeply into your worshipping 2010 consciousness!

1.0 out of 5 stars TRYING TO REGAIN LOST YOUTH IS A MISTAKE, 8 Oct 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This DVD is presented on screen by Micky, Davy and Peter, with Michael Nesbit mysteriously missing. He probably had more sense than the other three who try desperately, without much success, to regurgitate their past WIGGLY selves.
Micky is plumper in the face, Peter hasn't changed too much, but Davy's once cute pretty face is now showing its age. Years ago as a gay young thing I fell madly in love with his SPEAKING VOICE which has now lost its fascinating timbre.
People wanting to re-trigger THEIR past memories should save up and buy the original TV recordings.
