5.0 out of 5 stars Classic maiden type thing, 30 Jan. 2005
This review is from: The Number Of The Beast (Audio CD)
I own nearly all the Maiden CDs, and this one still stands out as one of my favourites. Over the band's history of albums (is it 23 now?) this is definitely one of, if not, the best.
Now, in the classic words of stephen_armstrong_sa, whoever you are:
Track by track analysis? Why thank you.
(there, i gave you credit, so don't sue me)
Invaders: Strangely viewed as filler by a great deal as fans, but for me it's a classic play-me-loud brainless heavy metal tune. And that's no bad thing. 8/10
Children of the Damned: Brilliant riff throughout, and haunting lyrics from brucey. A tune brilliantly written and composed, stands out on the album. 8.5/10
The Prisoner: What other band could do a song based on an old show from the 60s and make it actually worth listening to? Probably quite a few bands, but maiden do it better. 9/10
22 Acacia Avenue: Another great song, even if it did kinda freak me out a bit at first. Packed with atmosphere and outstanding guitar work throughout. 8/10
Number of the Beast: Hooray! The famous title track doesnt fail to deliver. From the legendary words of the passage read at the start to the blistering solos (and everything in between), this is one of the best songs maiden ever wrote. 10/10
Run to the Hills: Another amazing song here. The simple but oh-so-effective riff at the start leaves other bands wondering why they didnt think of it first, and the pounding chorus is just amazing at max volume! Hilarious video, too. 10/10
Gangland: Well, after the last two songs, it would be nearly impossible to create something worthy of following after. Not to say this is a bad track, but it just seems a bit poor in comparison, that's all. 7.5/10
Total Eclipse: The only song on the album that went thru one ear and out the other when i listened to it. Give it a chance - it may not be able to stand up to the classic anthems a bit earlier on, but it's still quite good... 7/10
Hallowed be thy name: That's more like it! An explosive 7 minute finale to the CD. Mind-blowing twin guitar work from Dave and Adrian, and Bruce's voice can't be topped. How can anyone hold their breath for that long?! 10/10
Overall, this is a landmark offering from the band we all know and love. Or if you're a new fan, you will know and love them after this. Excellent bassage from the mighty Steve Harris and awesome guitars make for an energetic performance from start to finish. Bruce's introduction into the fold gives the band almost a different identity, but its a good direction to be going in. The signs are clear: buy this now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection in CD form!!, 5 Jan. 2005
This review is from: Winterheart's Guild (Audio CD)
ok, you know the deal - its a bunch of ridiculously talented power metallers from finland: look at the bottom of the page there... you'll see a few other bands who can make exactly the same claim and show you to their album collection instead.
So what sets Sonata Arctica apart? Well, the answer would be this album! It is without doubt one of the greatest achievements mankind has produced, ever. The music is so brilliantly composed, including the most catchy - and powerful - melodies you will ever hear. The raw emotion behind the songs comes out perfectly, such as in the beatiful 'broken', an incredibly moving piece, or the fast paced 'victoria's secret', a great tune but with real emotion behind it, an feeling that comes out every time you listen to the songs.
I would recommend this work of art to anyone in possession of some sort of music playing device - I honestly can't understand why anyone wouldn't enjoy listening to a collection of the finest music in the universe.
It doesn't deserve 5 stars - it deserves a lot more, perhaps some kind of award.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing game, really, 3 Dec. 2004
This review is from: Red Faction 2 (PS2) (Video Game)
i just wanna start by saying i played this game long enough to get 11000 kills and counting, which really shows how much replay value there is. and now its on platinum!
where to start? the levels and enemies are perfectly designed for a varying difficulty level and a enjoyable experience: the geo-mod feature (thats destroying the scenery for those of you who didnt already know) lets you blow walls out and collapse towers on top of enemies! the weapons are also cleverly created: you get the usual stuff like machine guns and the like, but then an 'anti-personnel' explosive gun and a railgun to shoot thru walls! awesome
as well as the single player missions, you get botmatches, which stand out from deathmatches in most other games because you can create your own bots and upgrade their stats - another good idea that increases replay value further.
yes, the single player may be a bit short as other reviewers have said, but you play through it several times anyway: its all explosive action with not a single boring bit.
the only complaint i really have is that while the developers claim to have improved the geo-mod, you can actually blow up less stuff than before, but this is hardly noticeable.
overall, a revolutionary game full of fresh ideas that make it better than the other 5 billion shooter games.

Heroes Of Might & Magic Compendium
Heroes Of Might & Magic Compendium

5.0 out of 5 stars a little expensive, but definitely worth it, 3 Dec. 2004
all three of the games included are absolute classics, hundreds of hours of gameplay easily - i bought this years ago (i didnt know they still sold it til i found it by accident) and im still playing heroes 2!
basically each game comprises of a few campaigns and a mountain of scenarios to choose from. you take a bunch of heroes, give them monsters to fight with and spend the rest of your life thinking up new strategies to outwit your oppoenents and having more fun than most games nowadays give you.
i would highly recommend this because it really is hard to find (especially the price of loyalty expansion pack) and is just an amazing experience to play, mainly because of the sheer depth of it.
go buy it now!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars a great star wars game!, 17 Sept. 2004
i got this game a while ago, and as soon as i turned on the playstation i was amazed, not only by the brilliant graphics but the smooth, simple control system and the fun to be had flying around shooting down anything in sight!
There are loads of things to unlock: new missions (1 and 2 player), loads of new ships and bonus items such as trailers and comic books. Once you finish the game the first time round, you'll want to go back and play it again, not just to unlock everything, but because the missions are so well designed and fun to play!
The only complaints i have are that the game is a bit short and not too challenging most of the way through. Also i do not like the main character you play. But these are minor complaints really: nothing to stop you buying this great game!

4.0 out of 5 stars ... oh , it's not like you care, 5 Mar. 2004
What's that? He needs the toilet again? But with all the time spent eating, drinking caffeine and then cleaning up after himself, my funky, fez-wearing sim hasn't much time to party and have fun!
See, that's the problem with this game. Well, not so much a problem as a minor imperfection. The Sims has its good moments, like throwing house parties and becoming strip poker champion, or relaxing in the hot tub before creating an army of wooden gnomes. It's just that these bits are frequently punctuated by your sim needing the toilet, or getting hungry enough for their mood to drop jjust before work so you miss promotion again. These daily chores are of course what make up life but they come far too often in the Sims. If you just had to take care of your sim with boring tasks a bit less and live the wild life (like the adverts said) a bit more, then this would get 5 stars. As it is, they have to get the balance right it time for the next game.
That said, I don't want to give the wrong impression: this can be a fun game, if not for everybody, so go out and buy or rent it, see what you think.

5.0 out of 5 stars A PS2 classic, 5 Mar. 2004
This review is from: TimeSplitters 2 (PS2) (Video Game)
A lot of people say this game is often overrated and that it's not as good as other reviews made it out to be, but I found it to be a surprisingly enjoyable adventure amongst the sea of FPS games on the market.
What really makes the game stand out is the fast paced action, sense of humour (something missing from a lot of good games) and immense replay value. The levels themselves are well-designed and great fun to play over and over.
I also think the producers have nailed the difficulty curve perfectly. On an easier difficulty, the whole game can be completed in a day or two, but on the tougher settings the game can be nigh on impossible at times!
Overall a game which is simply great fun to pay at times, and even better with a few mates at the same time!
