5.0 out of 5 stars Breathtaking and groundbreaking!, 5 Oct. 2011
I have just read this book for the second time! I had to ... I kept thinking about it! The detail is as meticulous as it is extraordinary. The characters are as wonderfully fleshed out as the narrative is solid and totally believable. The imagery is especially powerful and I am delighted to see that someone has bought the film rights. I could see it in my head so clearly and hope they do justice to this wonderful book! Would highly recommend! Gripping stuff!

1.0 out of 5 stars Sunken Pirates, 19 Sept. 2011
I'm not sure who's to blame for the travesty that is "Pirates Of The Caribbean (4) - On Stranger Tides". It can't be the writers as Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio penned the previous 3. It can't be the actors! Certainly Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane, Kevin McNally and even Richard Griffiths put in good performances. I can only assume the responsibility for the dreadfulness of the film falls to the director Rob Marshall (revious films: "Nine", "Memoirs of a Geisha" and "Chicago"). The fact that the film lacked direction says it all! It was slow to the point of lethargic and I would not recommend this film to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great British Film, 21 Jan. 2011

This review is from: The Holly & The Ivy [DVD] (DVD)
This is AN ABSOLUTE CLASSIC film and stars Ralph Richardson,Celia Johnson, Margaret Leighton, (a very young) Denholm Elliott and others. It's set in the post war Britain and follows the story of Ralph Richardson who is the vicar of a local church in an English village. Almost the whole film is set in Ralph Richardson's house on the run up to Christmas. Margaret Leighton plays one of his children, a journalist writing for a London fashion magazine, Denholm Elliott plays his son doing National Service and Celia Johnson plays his other daughter who feels duty bound to reject John Gregson's proposal to accompany him to South America as the someone has to care for her widowed father. Maureen Delaney and Margaret Halstan play the elderly aunts who are kind of the "greek chorus" commenting on the events and people as the younger generation's guilty secrets begin to emerge and Richardson is forced to realise that the vocation he embraced in order to help his fellow man has rendered him lacking as a father and a father that none of the "children" feel they can talk to. Whilst this may not be the usual sugary fayre of Christmas, it is an excellent film and well worth getting and watching!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Jolly, 21 Jan. 2011
Always get one new thing for our Christmas tree and bought these lights. They are great and have various settings for different effects!!! We especially like that they came in one long string making it far easier to put up and around the tree, and of course, take them down again! Will be investing in some white lights for this coming Christmas!

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice idea shame about chronic battery life, 29 Dec. 2010
Just wanted something a bit different and bought 8 of these. One was dodgy from outset and company advised me to check battery. Battery proved to be issue and company sent me a further 5 pack of batteries at no extra cost. These lights, however, are only good for short bursts of activity and cannot be left on for long periods of time - which kind of defeated my object! Batteries get used up very quickly so wouldn't recommend these lights if you want them as part of your Christmas/Celebration decorations.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than a touch good, 22 Mar. 2010

If you were a fan of Doctor Who and went on to watch Torchwood, this blu-ray DVD set is a must! We were suffering withdrawal symptoms so bought it and watched it back to back one weekend. It was/is a fantastic programme, stuffed full of good intelligent writing and superbly acted by a brilliant cast. Hopefully they will be persuaded to make a 4th series soon.
