The Golden Years of Adventure Stories (Rover, Wizard, Hotspur, Victor, Hornet, Skipper, Adventure & Warlord Comic Annuals)
The Golden Years of Adventure Stories (Rover, Wizard, Hotspur, Victor, Hornet, Skipper, Adventure & Warlord Comic Annuals)
by D C Thomson
Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 4 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Found it rather disappointing considering the price. Hoped for & would have liked more stories from the Wizard from early 1950s before the era of picture stories.

This review is from: Eyelevel Overglasses (Apparel)
Increasing problems with the "strobe" effect of sunlight flickering through tree branches whilst driving, cycling, & even walking on windy days, prompted a search for wraparound protection.

These glasses have proven excellent - not only fitting over my prescription glasses but also accommodating digital hearing aids in both ears. The yellow tint of the lenses work very well with my prescription reactor lenses & make for great viewing into water to record wild-life. The design of the arms & the ledge on top of the frame cuts down side & top glare markedly & also reduces eye-watering side winds.

A possible drawback might be for those with prominently bridged "Roman" noses - wearing these glasses for an hour or more could cause discomfort on the bridge of the nose.

A small price to pay however for this level of protection - I am ordering a second pair so that one is permanently in the car & the other in my field waistcoat.

3.0 out of 5 stars A useful tool - but not a "must-have", 20 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Unit was bought to provide a lighter-weight tool than my Stihl Hedge Cutter with its petrol engine to trim hedges/trees up to 300 yards from the house and to access out-of-reach sections of hedges & prune ornamental/fruit trees.

Pros - extending handle & tilting head live up to expectations
- cutter head & saw blade easily interchanged
- quiet operation = no need for ear protectors
- deals with 1st & 2nd year growth adequately & will handle box & privet well

Cons - battery operation = small motor = small cutter blades = you cannot rush this machine & still expect good results
- blades MUST be kept sharp for the same reason
- there is already minor damage to the cutter blades indicating inferior quality steel
- the two power switches are awkwardly shaped & sized. I am going to tape the master/rear switch to permanently ON to ease the strain on aged fingers & permit better control during cutting
- saw blade has very small teeth & I doubt will be much use. A pole saw or long-handled branch lopper will be more effective.

Verdict - is it worth RRP of 150 = No
- " " " sale price of 100 = Ye....es, but with distinct reservations
- " " a "must-have" tool = No

3.0 out of 5 stars "Happy Feet" crib, 18 April 2013

This review is from: Surf's Up [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
A nice enough film, made obviously to cash in on the popularity of "Happy Feet", but it does not quite work. Much of the dialogue is too fast &/or muffled. One or two of the characters only meaningful if the viewer knows something about the history of surfing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money, 14 Jan 2013

It looks simple but is not very effective, especially at the smallest setting for soda/tonic bottles - strong fingers/wrist needed, so not good news for the elderly. We have donated ours to Oxfam in favour of a Brabantia Profile Line Universal Opener which may be double the price but is ten times more effective.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kitchen "must-have", 10 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This tool might look straight out of a mediaeval torture chamber or a CIA water-boarding unit but it is a very effective tool for opening bottle tops & jars - much better than Eddingtons Easi-Twist opener & well worth the extra money. For the elderly with weak wrists, small hands or arthritic fingers it is a "must-have" item in the kitchen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing, 1 Feb 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
We bought Ice Age 3 because its two predecessors were superb, both in graphics & dialogue with their lovely one-liner jokes. Ice Age 3 however is a grave disappointment - story-line is poor, script is dull & the dinosaurs will probably frighten more children than they entertain. Have watched it once but never again - whereas we will continue to enjoy the other two for years to come.

3.0 out of 5 stars P Gordon Smith, 9 Jan 2012

Hama Cable Release For Digital Cameras This product is obviously designed for cameras of rectangular/flat-sided body shapes. The velcro straps proved totally useless for my Canon Powershot A620 & A650 with their curved right-hand grip-cum-battery compartments. I therefore replaced the velcro with a 1.5 x 1 inch strip of leather and fixed the whole thing to the body of the camera with three strips of insulating tape. Fiddly undoubtedly - but once in position the release worked well & stayed in place. Do not forget to add that vital roll of insulating tape to the camera bag before embarking on outdoor/natural history photography.

3.0 out of 5 stars Curate's Egg, 5 Mar 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
We bought a pair after a very nasty fall on ice meant a visit to A&E to check against possible fractured skull.

These Ice Grips are effective and do work. HOWEVER 3 points should be noted :
1. if toe straps are fastened first, it is then very difficult to get heel strap on properly
2. therefore, we suggest reversing manufacturers fitting order and fit heel first, then toes
3. BUT, and this is a big BUT, aged or arthritic fingers will find toe straps virtually impossible to fasten. Why they cannot have velcro fasteners like heel strap seems incomprehensible.

We are therefore taking ours to our local shoe repair shop to have velcro fitted to the toe straps.
