5.0 out of 5 stars I can't write about this without sounding risque, 31 May 2014
Who would have thought a garden hose could be such fun? The instructions strictly remind us that that it really isn't a toy, but truly it could well be. Family and friends crowd around to watch it come to life ... See the scrunchie-like, feather light, jolly green caterpillar hose sitting there as innocent as can be; then, wow, with a turn of the tap it engorges with water and becomes Super Hose! Champion, the Wonder Hose! Fierce and powerful, or soft and careful, with several settings, each one is surprisingly effective.

I had a lot of amusement trying out all the positions - Full, Flat, Shower, Centre, Cone, Jet, Spray, Mist, some felt as strong as a pressure washer. Others as gentle as a scent spray. Altogether ideal for my tomato plants and seedlings; then again just the job for the car wash and the patio clean up. The water supply can be turned on and off from the gun. Then be sure to empty it out for the hose to return to its contracted state.

You may need a Bulk Hardware Push on Tap Connector with a Snap-Fit Hose Adaptor to get the wonder hose attached. We got ours to fit the hose tap connector ok without. If you pull off the tap connector the standard push is underneath. When you are spraying you can keep the action going without having to hold down the trigger, there is a little metal clip that takes over. The spray head itself is excellent, in fact it might cost you almost as much as the wonder hose just to buy a spray head.

Our old garden hose has set rock hard in its loops, has many old war wounds taped up along its length. Prone to annoying kinking and interruptions which end up with the attachment blowing off the tap, it is generally uncooperative, heavy and takes up too much space. Off to the recycling with it now as I have a new best friend, thanks to Henry Baker and Pampered Gardens. They are a pleasure to deal with, offering a refreshingly old fashioned style of customer service. I look forward to other useful products from this family firm.

Thank you for the chance to review this new and improved slant on an ordinary and previously overlooked item.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lighten our darkness, 30 May 2014
To get this going you will need aMaximalPower 18650 3.7V Rechargeable Li-ion Battery (Pack of 2) and/or a battery recharger to suit Battery Charger & 2 x Batteries 18650 1600mAh 3.7v Li-ion

I was supplied with charged up batteries and a torch for a fair review.

I must say the light is spectacularly bright. This torch will be a great help on short trips to and fro the car, for camping, for night dog walks and to have by the bed for power cuts. It has a substantial, well made feel to it. I felt very secure holding the torch and using it, the torch would fit happily into a coat pocket or handbag. The clip could secure it to a belt.

You turn it on by pressing the button on the bottom, you can adjust the beam and also create a strobe effect by turning the wheel, cap by the lamp. This is not a torch for using over hours, just short trips as it does quickly get quite hot. I suppose that could be useful in a big freeze...

So if you take care of it and are happy to recharge batteries rather than buy ordinary ones (I don't think you can get those to fit this torch) I can recommend the light it throws out as very effective and the size of the torch is such that it will be handy to have on your person in the darker days. Being waterproof is a big plus too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank goodness these really do stick fast, 30 May 2014

Every few months your steam mop will need new pads. This is inevitable as each time you take them off the mop they are filled with dust and grime. Then they go into the washing machine with the jeans and rough towels, dusters and cloths for a good hot wash. Well mine need that anyway, as we do have two furry dogs and live in the country...

The original striped Black and Decker ones with the tab are ok but actually these are even better, fluffier, fatter and really good at staying put. Towards the end of the pad's life they start detaching themselves as you wipe, the velcro is weakened and loose.

It doesn't matter that these don't have a tab, you can still pull them away easily.

I am really pleased with them and will order again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Turquoise, Sun on the Sparkling Sea, a Refreshing Spritz, 29 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have loved this for years, it vaguely reminds me of a perfume I used when younger, Ma Griffe, but it's lighter, and more modern.

Yes, it does have a 'rebalancing effect' that certainly lifts my spirits and sends me into the day with a positive vibe. The 'tranquility' promised is a plus, more of a hope than an expectation, maybe, but definitely an attractive aim. As is the promise of 'Serenity', 'Freshness' and 'Replenish'.

The 100g lasts a couple of months for me, liberally sprayed around whenever my eyes alight on it's pretty bottle, I feel flat and undressed without it.

All Clarins products are desirable, the summer fragrance in the orange bottle also a boost, the shower foam is gorgeous too... In case you're wondering what to buy me!

4.0 out of 5 stars Stretch out in style in your own bed-sit, 29 May 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
We found it quick to put up but definitely needed two people, in anything other than perfect conditions, as the half erected tent could easily be blown away. You need to pace it out, and one person's arms aren't long enough to put it up alone. The instructions are sewn to the bag, which I (63) carried happily to the field on one arm.

Pros:

The outside goes up first, which is sensible as the inside section and ground sheet will stay dry.

This is a common sense, uniform type of tent; perhaps similar to ones used by the Scouts. It would easily fit 3 -4 children or two adults in perfect comfort. Four persons? well maybe if you don't mind a squash and a squeeze.

The darker green colour means you can sleep in longer, you won't wake up at dawn.

The extra space apart from the sleeping area is really useful for storing wet boots, stoves, chairs, shoes etc. You could sit in it to eat. I am 5'4" and I can nearly stand up straight.

All is easily aired with the good ventilation and doors.

Cons:

We don't imagine that it will be all that durable; the materials are very light, and we had an immediate problem with an elastic gone inside a pole. There are only exactly the right number of pegs, which seems a bit tight, you will probably need another pack.

We found it hard to stuff it back totally tidily into the bag provided. However we got it so it could be carried again.

All in all a good buy, and certainly a lot cheaper, and hopefully more fun than a B&B!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Crystallisation of 20th Century Concerns., 26 May 2014
This review is from: The Facts of Life (Paperback)
I first read this in 1995 and it has been sitting safely on a shelf, together with my nearly complete collection of Patrick Gale books for nearly twenty years. This month we are reading A Perfectly Good Man for our Book Club and so I decided to revisit The Facts of Life as background browsing.

The more innocent first part is easily reminiscent of wide ranging mid last century family novels such as The Cazalet Chronicles Collection - 4 Books (RRP £33.96). Edward/Eli Pepper/Pfefferberg, most elegantly bridges both sections. He arrives, in wretched health, at a TB hospital, to be cared for by Dr. Sally. They make friends and the book begins to take shape. As a couple they are at first bohemian then more middle class. Throughout the story, wonderful music ripples through, as an underscore. Edward earnestly composes and plays, struggles as an artist ahead of his time, to conform, earn and build a reputation. Sally settles, allowed the freedom she needs by a generous mentor, Dr. Pertwee, who gifts her The Roundel, an unusual and inspirational female entailed property, that becomes their characterful home.

This is a very good tale, a hugely involving read; all of which is suddenly turned around by a shocking event. Sally only appears twice in the second part, which takes a very different turn. Written at the height of HIV/AIDS panic Patrick Gale has sensitively and comprehensively written the ultimate account of what it meant to be alive at that time and feeling very frightened. Infection may not anyway come from lifestyle, it can be medically introduced, so all are at risk. The relationships we are introduced to in the second part are illuminating, understandable, sweet and sour, always fascinating. Ghastly guilt is surrounding and enveloping the characters, to a deeply damaging extent; so much goes on in their heads, it is touchingly real and human. Generations unfold, children grow up, parents age... Nobody gets the perfect life.

I loved it even more the second time around and felt drawn back to the revolution in attitudes towards race, sexual orientation, moral judgement that is one of the major changes of my life span. Patrick Gale is a towering talent, his ability to conjure up atmosphere, smells, looks and feelings is pin sharp, and always kind, it is a privilege to be educated and entertained by his measured, thoughtful writing.

He should be even more widely appreciated. He feels like a friend.

I find these iron pills give a real boost. They have no adverse digestive effects for me, luckily, and so I can go on taking them without noticing anything upsetting.

I find I need them in phases, the clue is that I begin to feel slightly more tired than I should be and my legs begin to ache. Then I resume having one with breakfast every day and soon notice a return of renewed energy and flexibility.

I came to them via prescription iron which didn't agree with me, a local health food shop stocks these and other quest supplements and now I see they are on line at less cost.

These tablets must be kept away from children, only one a day is ever necessary. to be taken with a meal and water. They are not a substitute for healthy meals of course but we aren't always as good as we should be about that and may miss naturally absorbed iron in everyday food.

Suitable for Vegans; as well as the easily absorbed Iron, these tablets contain Vitamin C, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folacin, Vitamin B12, Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, Copper, molybdenum.... All around or slightly in excess of the recommended daily allowance. Sounds good for me!

4.0 out of 5 stars The truth is stranger than fiction., 25 May 2014
I galloped through this in a few hours, loving the references to our wonderful Helford River area. Liz Fenwick has found her niche, a perfect setting for her varied stories and this, the third, is the most accomplished. The artwork on the cover is fabulous.

Initially, I found that the frequent use of the name 'Jaunty' jarred; the confessional passages written by this lady, 'J,' shall we call her, appropriately, for a little relief, seemed at first, slow to gather momentum, perhaps, to be fair, because they were being written by a failing 92 year old lady. Happily things speed up and the rollicking good story gathers wind in its sails and sets off at a lick. By the end you have to stay awake and keep up, there are adventures to be had, misapprehensions corrected, threads drawn up tight, secret doors opened.

Glorious descriptions of art, nature, birds and boats chime happily with my own life, forty five years, spent here. Swimming in the creek was beautifully described, this must have been from personal experience. The wooden house at the mouth of Frenchman's' was aching for a romance to be set there, although already the real life tale of it's reclusive male occupant Powder Thurburn is told superbly in The Artist Who Loved Boats: Percy 'Powder' Thurburn - Mariner,Artist, Adventurer (1869-1961). As an inspiration, a starting point, for A Cornish Stranger, his own life deserved the excellent, illustrated book his friends wrote about him.

SOE operations from the Helford during the last war are also touched on, for other novels, about this clandestine effort, sometimes organised from The Helford River, try Deep Water Night Sky or Charlotte Gray

Liz Fenwick sends Gabe to the aid of her ailing grandmother, Jaunty, an acclaimed artist who has lived here, most privately, since the end of WWII. Little realising that she is about to uncover a hornet's nest of Jaunty's long kept secrets, Gabe settles in to the cabin to help. She is feeling low herself, unable to fully enjoy her inherited musical talents, which are blocked by a horrible episode that has left her damaged and nervous; Gabe has her own demons to face. Help is to hand fortunately, we can enjoy her thawing out, physically and emotionally.

Out of a storm a drama unfolds and a stranger must be rescued. Gabe summons all her strength and resources to save a life. This is where the mysteries tumble out of their boxes, past lives are awakened and unfortunately the truth must out. The man she saves is significant, there are connections to tease out. All the while there are songs to be sung, coffee to be savoured, wine to be shared, sketches to be drawn, music composed and friends to be made. Manaccan, St. Anthony, Helford and the Helford River are the busy backdrop, the local folk friendly, talented, interested, helpful, caring and kind. All as it should be!

4.0 out of 5 stars Summer time and the walking is easy, 20 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These shoes actually mould to your foot and grow in comfort so don't be too worried if for the first few days they feel tight around the toe fitting or under the wide strap. Just wear them for short walks at first until they settle down.

For me it is the shock absorbing effect that makes the world of difference to summer walking and every day use. Aching knees, pulled hamstrings, flat footedness are all history once you get used to wearing your fitflops. In and out of the water, no problem they dry fast. Out in the garden, just hose off your feet and shoes together before you come in.

Make sure to paint your toe nails to match your Walkstars for a final flourish!

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a duck to water, 20 May 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Our two year old grandson is perfectly content to sit on this cheerful chum. This toilet trainer is bright, sturdy, versatile, and most importantly attractive to him, he is more than happy to sit proudly on it as he learns to move from the potty to a grown up toilet. It has made all the difference to his training and we couldn't be more pleased.

Safe and secure, and that's the boy and the seat, all is set up for a relaxing, no fuss session. The bright colour and duck styling doesn't take away from what is a very effective design, which fits the various toilets I have tested and will safely hold an average size three year old in place. Gripping onto the sides helps balance. To get up to the seat on his own we offer a small plastic step ADDIS Step Stool, Metallic.

How proud the children are to achieve a loo visit all on their own.

It is easy to clean, and comes with a storage peg that fits on the side of the cistern. All in all, a very good value and effective toilet trainer which is easy to use and store.

Top marks. This special extra is well worth the money.
