4.0 out of 5 stars Good story. Well acted but dated looking, 7 Nov 2013

Watched this because love Lynda La Plante. Story is pretty convincing and really holds your attention throughout. It's quite dated looking now but not so much that it really matters. On the strength of this, we decided to buy some of the others in this series, even though there's loads of stuff like this on ITV3 all the time. This is high quality drama that's worth making time for. And there are no adverts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well acted and tense but also relentlessly tedious, 28 Aug 2013

Great cast and good camera work. Lots of hand held, close up shots of what it is like to be stuck on a stinking, hot ship with limited food and the relentless misery of fear and boredom in turn.
Cut to the corporate meeting room where the board and the negotiators strategise over how much money to offer the highjackers day by day, as they would close a business deal with Japan or New York.

Sound like a fun hour and a half? No?

Well, the acting's really good and the guy who plays Jasper in Borgen is in it. Look out for the guy who plays the professional consultant who is brought in to advise them on the negotiations. He is remarkable. You forget that you're watching a film and not a documentary because he is so natural.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest films I've ever seen, 28 Aug 2013
This review is from: In Bruges [DVD] [2008] (DVD)
This is one of the funniest, most original films I have ever seen and on top of that, there are some stunning back drops of gorgeous Bruges. This is one of those films to watch with a mate so you can keep quoting funny lines at each other for years and still fall about laughing after the fourth time.

The humour in this film involves A LOT of swearing and the story is quite dark, being about hitmen and everything. The dialogue works because the two main characters contrast with one being a wise, older man and the younger one being like a really silly, immature, insecure, impatient youth who thinks anything to do with culture, particularly Bruges is s***.

As the story develops, you have formed an attachment to the younger character who is haunted by his past. Even though he is really annoying, you care about what happens to him. As the plot twists and turns, the shock of why they are In Bruges comes to a nail biting conculsion....

There's rather a nice DVD extra on the version of the DVD that I've got that is just the view from a nice gentle boat ride along the canals in Bruges (it's in Belgium).

4.0 out of 5 stars Overproduced, 4 Jun 2013

The lead singer of this group (the eponymous Florence) has got a truly outstanding voice. Why the producer seemed to think it was needed to add tons of echo and layer upon layer of sounds I don't know. It seemed a shame. Great album though. I think half my problem is that I've got a really awful stereo but if the production is good enough, it shouldn't matter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highlights of Highlights, 4 Jun 2013

When they said highlights I thought they meant ALL of Mo Farah's race for example, but not all of the heats. They really do mean highlights like you'd see on the news so I was a bit disappointed. I think part of the pleasure of watching a lot of olympic sports is the build up and tactics during a race. They even edited the rowing!

1.0 out of 5 stars A waste of the tree it was printed on, 28 May 2013
This review is from: Dust To Dust (Paperback)
Some guy is found hanged. Was it murder or some sort of auto-erotic homosexual loveplay? Even after half of the book it still hadn't got anywhere. The dialogue is so cliched and the characters are just so dull. I didn't finish the book. I tried flicking to the end but I couldn't find the relevant bit where it said whodunnit but I didn't care.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Romp, 28 May 2013
This review is from: Jack Reacher [DVD] (DVD)
Look. Don't analyse this too much. Get yourself a takeaway and put your comfy trousers on. The ones with the elasticated waist. Or better still a onesy. Now, enjoy the action. I told you not to analyse it. Why did you do that? I know, I know. Why would anybody coming face to face with their enemy who wants to kill them just throw their weapon away in favour of a good old manly, rugged scrap? I think we know the answer. He wants us to forget him jumping up and down on Oprah's sofa, doesn't he? There's a great scene where he gets his top of and believe me, you won't be picturing him shouting 'I am in love with Katie Holmes' at that point. Anyway, back to the film. It has a silly story whereby he is the best police soldier who has ever lived and has awards coming out of his ears but he chooses to live in the shadows until a man he promised to come and find if he ever committed an evil act puts out a call asking for his help.....(tense music)....

3.0 out of 5 stars A Slightly Disappointing Pot Boiler, 3 May 2013
It's nice to see Jonathan Creek back on our screens. Strange, isn't it. If someone asked you to describe your ideal man, most ladies wouldn't say 'I like a bumbling, antisocial, borderline autistic wierdo with shaggy hair and a duffle coat'....but there's just something about him, isn't there!

In this episode, he is a high-flying executive who's moved out of his beloved windmill and working for his horrible, middle-class, yuppie wife (the pretty one from Smack the Pony.) His blond side kick (Sheridan somebody) comes across some kind of mystery in and old school, you know, the usual and he just has to help her because she's only a woman. The story line just isn't as enjoyable as the other ones but it's still watchable.

It's worth watching this for the scene when he reaches into the back the wardrobe to get the duffle coat out (yey!)

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Watch, 8 April 2013
This review is from: Man on a Ledge [DVD] (DVD)
We watched this on a Saturday night, at home with the family and a a few snacks. We all really enjoyed it! None of us saw the twist coming and the film held our attention throughout. The whole point of the film is WHY he's on the ledge and why he will only deal with one negotiator.

It's well made and well acted most of the time. Having Billie Elliot in it was a bit distracting though but he was really good too. His girlfriend's push-up bra was also shall we say, a feature. I know when I've got some acrobatics to do, I need one. Ed Harris is fantastic as the villain, despite a truly awful wig.
