Die, Monster, Die! [DVD]
Die, Monster, Die! [DVD]
Dvd ~ Boris Karloff
Price: 6.99

1.0 out of 5 stars COME ON! COME ON! COME ON! COME ON! COME ON! COME ON!, 28 July 2014
This review is from: Die, Monster, Die! [DVD] (DVD)
This film is a poor effort. The script is dull and as for the story line there isnt one. As if Nick Adams acting isnt bad enough you have to endure his "Come on" line on umpteen occasions through out the film. I know peoples attitudes to the female sex were different then compared to today but really! Even for 1965 the script must rank as extremely masoginist. And even im not keen on feminists. The sets are good and it is quite atmospheric. How ever in short the film is shat. One good scene though is the ending. As Suzan Farmer hangs off the bannister you can just see she has suspenders on. Or perhaps hold ups. Either, a damn sight more stimulating than her acting.

One more thing. Most reviewers of this film rate it highly. They must be highly too!

The first hour was entertaining enough. Well paced, a story unfolding, rich colours, expensive sets, good acting. Then it became lacklustre, dull. The Night Porter is a far superior Italian made film also with Dirk Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling.

Gumshoe is a so so film that fails to hit the mark. Although a well acted film the story line is silly from start to finish. A depressing throw back from the early seventies that really is quite forgetfull. Certainly not classic british.

I was glad when it was over. 5 out of five for Dark Sky's DVD presentation. 2 out of five for the film itself.

The Brass Monkey [1948] [DVD]
Dvd ~ Carole Landis

2.0 out of 5 stars More like a Comedy than a Thriller, 7 Oct 2013
This film is a dreary half baked comedy. It could have been half decent had they killed Carol Levis off at the earliest opportunity. It was a half decent plot so why include the clowns. Film is a poor copy but the sound is OK. Normally Odeon Entertainment release top notch thrillers but not so here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Able early Hammer Sci Fi flick, 7 Oct 2013

I enjoyed this film. Although low on budget and its cheap sets the acting is overall quite good and the script entertaining. Good acting from Howard Duff as a scientist and Alan Wheatley a a military intellegance officer. Hammer should have stuck to the espionage theme of the story and developed it with a down to earth approach in stead of going down a rushed and silly ending. But then this is Hammer sci fi 1952 style. Poor sound but listenable and overall I really enjoy these early hammer films. Very good late fifties science documentary included plus booklet. Hammer fans wont be dissapointed.

Not a bad film. All be it a bit rushed and a tad silly in places towards the end. Worth watching though, just to see the very attractive and sexy Veronica Lake.

2.0 out of 5 stars STOLEN FACE, 11 Jun 2013
This film is mediocre at best. Take no notice of the the review that gives it 5 stars. This film has has little in digital remastering. More like a VHS to DVD convert. There is no world of hammer documentary. Official hammer anyway. Who are likely to have wrote the review are more interested in sales than a bona critic. As for the film it is rushed and as of such is out of sorts for a film only 72 mins long. The acting is average and then there is a relentless annoying carry on style soundtrack throughout. This film just lacks it and is not Fishers usual standard. Fishers Four Sided Triangle is vastly superior and has a good print on its DD disc release with a informative 24 page booklet.

Svengali [DVD] [1954]

Price: 10.02

3.0 out of 5 stars Svengali, 20 May 2013
This review is from: Svengali [DVD] [1954] (DVD)
The film is ok. The last 20 minutes covered too many events and had the script been longer it would have tired. Hildgarde Neffs acting is of a good standard. The same goes for Wolfit. The film is not digitally remastered.. The sound is ok but not brilliant and the print is washed out and scratched. No extras.

5.0 out of 5 stars TONY CARMONTE, 12 May 2013

This film is entertaining. Taut and full of action. Briiliant performances all round. This has to be seen if you have the taste for black and white gangster American movies of the thirties. Paul Muni is very good as Tony Carmonte and this man would have been taylor made to play Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
