James has really brought the desert alive here you can tell he is one of our countries foremost ww2 military historians he really conveys what it was like in the desert. Here he gets caught up in espionage and intrigue as well which adds another exciting edge to it. i could not put it down.

This review is from: The Odin Mission (Hardcover)
This is a great start to what i hope will be long series. Jack Tanner is that breed to hero that so many fail to get on to a page in a believeable form but James manages with style. The plot has more twists than a rife barrel never disspointing. The description of his action sequences are brillent and brings to life the real cahos of battle.
His obvious prowess in history shows at every turn. I really liked this and cannot recommend it highly eneough.

This book makes a very clear picture of a very comlex part of the second world war. Harrowing in places the brutal truth of war and its impact on the civilian population is here in all its naked horrow.
I can't rate this high eneough and i cant wait to read his Novel based in the second world war due out in May.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprised of Bowerchalke, 6 Nov 2006

I live in the next village to James Holland and though it would be fun to read a book by him. I went to the libary and was shown the book that was filling a huge slot on the shelf and though oh my god i will never read this. I eventually ran out of books and picked it up and that was it i have read it like a man possed even going to bed at 9pm much to my wifes mirth for a couple of housr of uninterrupted reading. It is a brillent balance of personal account and grand over view giving the book a lovley balance. I much love this book because it really does explain the confilict so much more clearly than many of his contempories eg Antony Beevor do and it is such a large and confusing battle.

Should be compulsery reading for all A leval history students.
