Being a Russian myself I have always been very critical of foreign portrayal of dramatic and sometimes dark events of the Soviet history. These events are still a topic for heated debates in the Russian press and it only has been twenty years since we have learned about the Red Terror and the humanitarian crisis which followed the October Revolution and the Civil War of 1918-1921. Having read "The Court of the Red Tsar" by the same author I decided to give this book a chance. The story follows the life of a young women from the privileged Jewish background. The dramatic events of the October Revolution turn spoilt beautiful Sashenka into romantic revolutionary whose life follows the pattern so typical of a young generation whose lives and families were torn apart by the violence of the Bolshevics. The story tells us about the privilege and decadence of the Russian aristocracy, about the cruelty and treachery of the new leaders, about love and faith, and how easily the stability and peace could be taken away. A very convincing and gripping story, fluently written, making this book a very enjoyable journey through the events the consequences of which still could be read in modern Russian history.

This is the best "The Nutcracker" production so far. The masterpiece by the outstanding master of Russian and Soviet choreography Yuri Grigorovich, this production follows the story line of the old Christmas children's story by Hoffmann. This is the ballet and the libretto I am used to since I was a child is easy to follow and falls wonderfully on the famous Tchaikovsky music score. Filmed during the performance at the Bolshoi Theatre this ballet celebrates the comeback of the truly classic ballet, famous Russian technique and the genius of Yuri Grigorovich. I am afraid the glittery production of the Royal Ballet does not stand any comparison where the plot was completely revised and the dancing is not as powerful. The Russian Nutcracker is very elegant and eloquent. The filming is very sharp and brings you that perception of presence at the performance. The costumes and the set are true work of art and long-time collaboration between Grigorovich and Versaladze who staged several big productions at the Bolshoi. Watching this program you will appreciate all the praise which goes to the dancing company. Absolute must have and must see.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 21 Sep 2011

This review is from: Black Swan [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
My personal opinion is that this film is hughely overrated and misrepresented. Despite the star studded cast and intriguing theme I found myself cheated to say the least. When you go to see the ballet "Swan Lake" you expect a feast for your senses and would not expect this classic ballet to be exploited in such perverted way. Even the portrayal of psychiatric disorder is far fethched. Everyone knows that the ballet world is highly competitive and sometimes brutal. But this movie is not even about that. I still wonder what is it about. The fact that the principal dancer is struggling to grasp the character of Odette-Odille is just naive. Every ballet dancer knows the fabula of the ballet and strives to dance it as soon as they enter the ballet company. I cannot believe that in real world the character portrayed by Miss Portman would even reach the status of the Principal Dencer. If anyone ever saw a princial dancer in real life they would notice what charismatic and disciplined these people are. But...never mind. Not to mention hugh tattos on the back of Mila Cunis. Has anyone ever seen a ballet dancer with tattos, smoking, and spiknig their drinks? Well, maybe. If anyone would like to see a movie about the spiritual and physical struggle, love, competition, they need to see the Russian movie "Fouette" starring the famous Russian Ballet star Ekateirna Maximova. The drama was made in Soviet Union in 1986. There will be no self-inflicted wounds, mastrubation and Odille will be real, performed by the star of the Bolshoi ballet.

The DVD consists of 2 parts - the first part is composed of famous leading roles performed by Maya Plisetskaya; the second part - is interview with Diva recorederd probably in 90s.

You will get a chance to witness the greatest Russian ballerina in "Death of the Swan", "Don Quixote"," Raymonda", the ballets that made her famous and admirable around the globe. You will also appreciate her wit, charm and eloquency. She is a very brave, outspoken and beautiful women.

3.0 out of 5 stars Poor quality DVD, 13 May 2006
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you expect a spectacular presentation of the Bolshoi Ballet, you will be grossly disappointed by a very bad quality of filming: watery colours, blurred faces... Divertisement which you might have enjoyed in the theatre is not just the right format for DVD, on which you would expect lots of close views, rich colours and quality settings. The only more or less acceptable part of the film is "Spartacus". Famous dancers, heart rending music make you to forget about obvious imperfections of the DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous "Swan Lake" and Russian Prima, 12 April 2006
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
That is, probably, the best production of "Swan Lake" ever released on DVD. The performance is taken by close-up throughout. You will get a unprecedented chance to admire the dance, the footwork, the costumes in all their beauty and opulence. The filming is very sharp and will be a pleasant surprise for those who are only used for theatrical settings whilst watching the ballet.
