Agile!: The Good, the Hype and the Ugly
by Bertrand Meyer
Edition: Paperback
Price: £23.54

5.0 out of 5 stars A " MUST READ" for anyone thinking of doing, ..., 11 Aug 2014

A " MUST READ" for anyone thinking of doing, or starting to use Agile processes. A very well put together book that is well researched and level headed discusses the pro's and the cons of XP. Scrum, Crystal and Agile in general. IT will be a real eye opener for many.

Jason Talbort - The Masonic Detective
Jason Talbort - The Masonic Detective
by Martin Faulks
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.11

1.0 out of 5 stars promised much but delivered little, 10 April 2014
The cover blurb reads like a cross between a Dan Brown and a Conan-Doyle. Sadly this book is small with large print containing three quite short stories. They appear to have been magazine articles. The characters are two dimensional and hardly developed at all, the masonic wisdom, or indeed any wisdom is lacking and it comes across a s a 6th formers failed attempt at a Holmes and Watson pastiche. Anyone expecting anything masonic in the book will be sorely disappointed. A great pity as I know the author could and should have done so much better. Rather than reprint three short magazine articles actually do what the cover said and produce a masonic detective novel. Dan Brown for all his faults and inaccuracies does a far better job.

iPhone Millionaire: How to Create and Sell Cutting-Edge Video
by Michael Rosenblum
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.20

5.0 out of 5 stars Some waffle but lots of nugets of gold in there., 8 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought the book after going on a Roseblum course the book is based on so it made a lot of sense to me. I can hear Michael saying some of the things in the book". So the book could save you 1000 GBP (though you don't get the personal tuition) but. all the salient points for making reality Tv programs are in there. It is not just (simple) techniques but a look at the whole TV/Video industry and why it is the way it is in the 21st century (it has gone though several revolutions in the last two decades) . The book is well worth having for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lot of performance in a small package, 8 Nov 2013

lot of performance and features in a small package at a good price. The safety track recording is great for reporters. Only grip is you have either the phantom power to the XLR on or off. Might have been useful to have them switched separately(the levels are separately controlled) otherwise I can't find anything to fault.

3.0 out of 5 stars a great book but...., 7 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this book as all the other reviews praised it highly. I would have agreed with their 5 stars BUT....
to quote Larry Lazlo of Entertaionment Weekly from the DVD (talking about reporting at the Cannes Film Fesitval) Photo Journlaisum in the US is very different to the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia etc. That is the only failing of this book for anyone outside the USA.

The book is very US centric which is not a problem for anyone in the US. This book will be The Book to have for any aspiring US photo journalist. Totally essential to have.

Outside the USA (an alien concept to many Americans :-)it is still a very good book and as long as you can filter the US specific stuff. It does make facinating reading with many usefull comments and tips that are universal. The sections on Ethics and the Law are, of course, somewhat differnt to Europe and the rest for the world. It will help you work out what sells in the US.

My final thought is that the book is dated 2008. So it was put together in 2006-8 (6th edition) and is probably due (mid 2012) for an update to the 7th edition. Not only have [digitial]cameras, laptops, phones etc moved on, requireing a change in the equipment chapters so has the market and the news industry in general (far more on line and on tablets) and the change in newspaper/magazine market. The pace of change is frightening.

That said the basics of Photo Journalisum have not altered in many decades. This book should be THE book on the shelf of US photo Journalists and one of the books on the shelf for the rest of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars chapter 1 IS important (buy this book before you buy lightroom), 29 July 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very good book but but you MUST buy it before you buy lightroom. Chapter one can save you hours of grief if you read it before you start using Lightroom! How you set up your library(s) is very important and the suggestions and strategies will save much swearing (and time) later!

Note the introduction to each chapter is an "off the wall" counter point and a muse on almost anything but the the subject at hand... if you watch the associated on line video(s) for the book it explain that this is the comfort/cofffe/smoke break he has on his courses. There are several videos and example pictures on his web site (password is in the book) that help bring the book alive

Also I agree with the author you should read this book in chapter order from end to end I would also suggest with a couple of memory cards of pictures and try out the ideas. Then use Lightroom on your main collection....

The only other comment is the chatty style is the same as his video style go to the web site and see what his videos are like. if you like the style buy the book (then lightroom) otherwise the style will drive you nuts. I like it.

If you already have lightroom the book is still very good though you may want to re-rig your entire library after reading it :( You can also dip into it chapter by chapter after you have read it from end to end and it works but don't do it the other way around.

4.0 out of 5 stars A new "standard" book on TCP/IP, 8 Aug 2006
I liked this book. It book is in two parts. First is theory I found that the theory was clear enough to understand it. Diagrams always help :-) In many ways the first part is "just another TCP/IP book®

What set this book apart for me is the second half and the software (on the CD). It uses a series of labs to do various part of the stack including serial and ethernet drivers. I found it was brilliant for understanding the theory.

The target processor is ARM which is everyone's favourite at the moment! One thing I like is the dev kits used are obtainable in most countries (they are IAR kits to match the compiler) I hate having to send off to the other side of the world for hardware for a book! That said the SW runs in the simulator too though that is pointless for comms SW!

I think the book is easy to read, all the SW and tools are on the CD. If you want to understand TCP/IP from theory to the last byte of SW this is the book.. This is an ideal book for students. I can see it becoming THE course book for TCP/iP

Why only 4 stars? I had to go and buy a dev kit to really use the SW. I now hacve a new nodes on the network. The quation is what do I get the board to do now.
