2.0 out of 5 stars Brad's Bitches Brew this ain't, 6 Mar 2014
Like other reviewers here I'm a long-time fan of Mehldau's music, but this was a bit like listening to the Tallis Scholars doing a Motorhead tribute album.

1.0 out of 5 stars The hero all teenagers want to be, 26 Feb 2014
This review is from: The Matrix (Amazon Instant Video)
Great concept, executed with quite bottom-clenchingly,juvenile plotting. A fantasizing fourteen year old's wish-list of super hero encounters, all realised with superbly wooden acting..

1.0 out of 5 stars 24 carat rip off, 18 Dec 2013
This review is from: Bach Cantatas Part 4 (Audio CD)
I have all of these discs, bought individually. They're sublime, so the single star is for the theft that this current price represents. Retailers have latched on to the 'Anniversary Edition' nonsense and booted the prices accordingly. Originally issued as '10 cds for the price of 3', this and the other boxes are now - ludicrously - more expensive to buy than each disc therein individually. If you have more money than sense, go ahead. Otherwise wait for the inevitable complete cantatas box set from BIS - I'll bet it won't be any more expensive than this travesty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up with - if not - the best, 20 Oct 2013
Along with Bryden Thomson, Handley was for me one of the best VW interpreters of his generation. This - the 5th and Flos Campi - was his finest moment. At full price it would be a bargain; at its current giveaway it's one of the best purchases in British classical music. I'd give it six stars if I could.

5.0 out of 5 stars Golden memories, 20 Oct 2013
When I first plunged into VW in the late 80s, Bryden Thomson's symphonic/orchestral cycle on Chandos was in the process of being issued. Some reviewers weren't entirely overwhelmed, considering his interpretations a touch staid. For me, they were - are - special. His sound, aided by Chandos of course, was sumptuous, and, like Klemperer with Beethoven, he fully realised the majesty of VW's music. Though not on this current reissue, his Tallis Fantasia remains unsurpassed in my view. The pieces here were 'fillers' to the symphonies, though every bit as enjoyable. If I didn't have every one of them on separate discs already I'd snap this up.

2.0 out of 5 stars A shame, but inevitable, perhaps, 23 Aug 2013
With the explosion in the number of classical recordings since the late 80's, it's been increasingly difficult to produce a comprehensive guide. Ideally, sub-genres within Classical music could have been dealt with discreetly, but I guess that Penguin weren't going to commit the necessary funds for something that would never pay for itself. Still, it's sad that the 'answer' has been to so fundamentally abandon the previous format and produce such a throwaway, of-its-time inconsequence as a '1000 best' exercise. I bought it for old times' sake (having refreshed my guides once every 3 or 4 years since 1989), but this is the last time.
