Listening to Brahms
Listening to Brahms
by Rosemary Allen
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read, 29 July 2013
This review is from: Listening to Brahms (Paperback)
This is quite a remarkable debut. The story's two parallel strands are cleverly managed, and the reader's interest is continually maintained. There are a lot of characters to keep track of, but that never becomes a problem, and you want to keep going while reading to see how the story develops. This author has an obvious talent, and I await her next book with interest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overwhelming, 17 July 2013
If like me you are usually overwhelmed emotionally when you hear Mahler 8, this DVD is for you. The sheer profusion of performers on stage - the singers all crammed in and apparently standing throughout - and probably the largest orchestra you are likely to see on one stage - is an astonishing sight. Fortunately the performance lives up to expectations, and if you can turn the sound right up, you will submerge yourself in an amazing experience. How hard was it to present this performance? It's also a true triumph of organisation. Get this and wallow. You won't regret it.
PS Congratulations to the producers of the DVD who include the names of every single performer in the on-screen credits (in itself a remarkable achievement).

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal pianism, 22 Mar. 2013

Not having encountered this lady before, I was intrigued by the comments about her new set of Rachmaninov concertos, but thought I would try this DVD first. Wow. I thought Yuja Wang was terrific, but Valentina is equally brilliant, and the cascades of notes in Liszt's solo version of Totentanz have to be seen (and heard) to be believed. Astonishing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth seeing, 10 Feb. 2013

Having discovered Ashton Kutcher first in Two and a Half Men, where he is quite a bit funnier than Charlie Sheen, I was interested to see him in a feature film. This one is great fun and very enjoyable, and in the end quite touching. Well worth seeing.

This review is from: A Bunch Of Amateurs [DVD] (DVD)
Following an interview programme with Burt Reynolds in which this film was mentioned, I decided to give it a try, not having heard of it before. It turned out to be a delight, withe Reynolds excellent, and backed by a really strong cast including Derek Jacobi, Samantha Bond and Imelda Staunton. It is obvious where the plot is going, but it is done with care and panache. Go and watch it

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential reference tool for film-lovers, 10 Nov. 2011

This books seems to review most of the films ever released, with all the details you need. It's been going for many years, and gets bigger each year - so the print size is rather small - beware. You probably won't agree with all the ratings, but it's generally a reliable guide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pianistic pleasure, 9 May 2011

For once, a film about a pianist in which the star pianist is a real one who actually plays the music himself. I enjoyed this film a lot. Liberace is always Liberace of course, but his acting is decent, the story OK, and the colour photography helps create a pleasing experience. A pity he never made the second movie which was apparently part of the original contract.

5.0 out of 5 stars A joy, 12 Mar. 2011
This is sung with great beauty by the entire cast - there is not a weak link anywhere. Strauss's music is gorgeous, and the whole production is wonderful - playing, singing, and visually. It doesn't obliterate in my memory the Peter Rice designed production at Covent Garden back in the 60s, when Fischer-Dieskau was an incomperable Mandryka - but what could? Five stars - enjoy it.

A fine recording of anthems etc associated with Winchester College - many distinguished musicians worked there, from Jeremiah Clarke, Thomas Weelkes, S S Wesley and George Dyson, to the present Head of Chapel Music Malcolm Archer. The Chapel Choir is in good form. A most enjoyable disc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rare Beethoven, 20 Nov. 2010

This miniature score gives the Quartet arrangement by Beethoven together with the original Piano Sonata in E that was the original. It means you can easily compare the two versions. Excellent
