4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent cookbook with accurate Danish recipes, 19 Jan. 2011
I bought this book wanting to learn to cook some of the meals I have grown up eating from my Danish mother and her family.

The recipes are easy to follow, with great images to whet your appetite. The section on 'smørrebrød' (open sandwiches) is slightly too long. However some of the recipes are great. Firm favourites of my fiance and mine are 'gammeldags kylling' (olden days chicken) and 'kyllingsuppe' (chicken soup), which taste just like my Mum and Grandma make! However, I do find that I replace some of the ingredients stated from my knowledge of how my Mum makes them. For example, the 'frikadeller' (wonderful Danish pork and onion meatballs) recipe calls for breadcrumbs, whereas my Mum and her family have always used plain flour. But other than changing that, and adding a little less milk, my frikadeller always come out lovely and light and tasty.

Other reviews have said that it's a shame not to see recipes such as hakkebøf included. Though, to be fair, hakkebøf is not a complex recipe at all, and to include it in the book at the expense of a more complicated recipe would not have made sense.

Over all I think it has some accurate Danish recipes and is worth using to explore Danish cooking.

Every Light in the House Burnin'
Every Light in the House Burnin'
by Andrea Levy
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 19 Jan. 2011
I've read a number of Andrea Levy's novels. First Small Island, which I fell in love with, followed by Never Far From Nowhere, the Long Song and now Every Light in the House Burning. And what a wonderful story this is, as all Andrea's novels are.

Andrea writes with such a feeling of sincerity, making the characters in this novel very believable. Every Light in the House burning is a very engaging and moving novel, which I found I whizzed through and shed tears finishing it on the train.

Thoroughly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic film, 31 Aug. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Gran Torino [DVD] [2009] (DVD)
An elderly man (Walt Kowalski), having just lost his wife, unintentionally finds friendship with his Hmong neighbours when he inadvertently saves the teenage boy nextdoor from an altercation with his cousin's gang. Walt then finds himself stepping in on a few occasions where either the boy or his sister get into bother.

This is a brilliant story about a man who finds he has more in common with the immigrant family around him than his own family and feels compelled to help them.

By far the best film I've seen in a long time and definitely recommended.

Fantastic. I loved reading this book and really struggled to put it down. In fact, it got me back in to reading after a period of reading very little.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC, 1 May 2006
Don't be put off by all of the negative comments about this film.

I must admit, having watched the BBC version time and time again I was a little sceptical about the film version. Also, not being a massive fan of Kiera Knightley, I was unsure about her playing the part of Lizzie. However, one cannot deny her excellent portrayal of Lizzie.

Yes, a lot has been cut out of it, but it's done sensitively and as everything is seen throught the eyes of Lizzie, all of the less necessary storylines were taken out. This makes it a refreshing and digestable version.

This film is now a firm favourite of mine and I cannot get enough of it. The cinematography is fantastic, the soundtrack moving, and the acting superb. It beats the BBC version hands down.

An enchanting film and a must buy!

Bought it as a present for boyfriend's stepfather. Not a huge fan of the Beatles, but it is well worth a flick through

2.0 out of 5 stars Completely ripped off, 5 Mar. 2005
This review is from: Keep This Fire Burning (Audio CD)
The Swedish pop star Robyn released this song all over Europe over 2 years ago. It was so much better than the Beverley Knight version, and should have always been brought out here. If anything, track down the original and get that instead. You can download it, and really should.
