5.0 out of 5 stars The truth really can hurt!, 19 Aug. 2011
I have recently watched this film again, and it was even more powerful than before, with excellent performances by Fonda, Lemmon and Douglas.
A 'routine' visit to a nuclear facility becomes anything but when an 'incident' occurs. In spite of reassurances from a a management which is willing to do a cover-up at ANY cost, the reporter and a senior scientist begin to understand that there is a very real danger of a major radiation accident.
But, as I say, that management will go to any lengths to protect their project and their profits!...

4.0 out of 5 stars when films were beautiful!, 19 Aug. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The title of my review alone may be enough to dissuade others from buying, given that filmgoers today want action, violence and CGI thrills.
Well for those who may want an old-fashioned love story - and one of the finest stories portrayed by three of the finest actors - "The Enchanted Cottage" is hard to beat.
A young couple, scarred and damaged by life, find happiness together in a small cottage and come to see one another as beautiful. Their blind friend realises the enchantment of the cottage has brought them a new happiness - but the world as always finds a way of shattering dreams! Will true love find a way?
For once forget the popcorn and bring out the tissues!

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm just wondering what I missed!, 18 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
You know what it's like. You check in, locate your room, live out of your suitcase for however long, and then depart. No fuss! No excitement! No nothing!
Try watching "Hotel" and see just how much you've missed in life. The bellboys and the house detectives; the sultry nightclub singer who seems to be tickling the ivories twenty-four hours a day. If that's not enough, try your luck on the elevators, operated by a dear old liftman who looks older than the hotel itself, and looks panic stricken every time the lift 'sticks'.
Time has not taken away any of the drama or atmosphere of this enjoyable movie based on the book by Arthur Hailey (he of 'Airport' fame).
A great cast, and a briskly paced film will give you a fascinating look into the old douce world of 'southern hospitality'.

The Resurrection of Christ;: An essay in biblical theology
The Resurrection of Christ;: An essay in biblical theology

5.0 out of 5 stars A deep truth in simple terms, 17 Jun. 2011
Generations of Christian have enjoyed and learned from the many books written by Professor William Barclay. Some will still remember the TV lectures he gave on a Sunday evening, often meaning the suspension of Evening Services in many Churches.
While I enjoyed his many teachings, however, the book which helped me to best understand the Resurrection was one written by Michael Ramsay when he was Professor of Divinity at Durham University, some time before his elevation to higher offices in the Church.
This was one case of 'wearing one's learning lightly' as he looked at the enormity of Christ's Resurrection, and did so in a manner which was to prove most helpful to the many who wanted to believe but found it so difficult.
I was fortunate to find this little book, and commend you on your good fortune should you manage to acquire a copy.

3.0 out of 5 stars There's always one nutty scientist!, 17 Jun. 2011
This review is from: Indestructible Man [DVD] (DVD)
Dear old Lon Chaney gets what he deserves - the death sentence! Just when he should rest - whether in peace or not - enter the mad doctor who has the age-old dream (which made countless horror films) of restoring life.
After that it's all downhill as Lon goes on the rampage. The beauty of this movie is the unconscious humour whih runs through it - especially the regular camera close-ups of Lon trying to look all scary and menacing.
Not a great movie by any means but sure to be watched by real horror movie buffs.

The Brain That Wouldn't Die [DVD]

4.0 out of 5 stars Brings new meaning to the phrase 'headstrong'!, 17 Jun. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was a new twist on the frankenstein story. His creator started with a body and then looked for a brain. Herb Evers, having crashed the car and decapitated his girlfriend, keeps her head alive presumably to have someone to talk to on those long winter evenings?
She, however, prefers to talk to some unspeakable monster who inhabits the locked cupboard across the room. While poor boyfriend is out looking for a body for his true love, she's doing mind games with horror boy. It can only end in tears, although in this case 'flames' might be more correct.
An oldie but still worth a look, and a worthy edition to your old horror film collection!
