As an 81 year old Manchester man, I have been aware of the Pankhurst's and how Women had to fight for their right to vote. This book does not only highlights the Pankhurst family, but also stalwarts such as, Annie Kenny,Mrs. Drummond, and many more.
It also shows some of the so called "Great Men " in their true colours, men such as Churchill, Asquith, Lloyd George, Baldwin, men who spoke well, but did very little during those terrible years. For ALL the people who did not vote at the last election, read this, and be ashamed.

For me the term "Cool Jazz " is over used sometimes. However, in this case the term was made to describe this pure music delight.
Ms. Teal once more proves that this country has produced no better Jazz singer, and together with Grant Windsor on piano, they are unbeatable..

Although written over 50 years ago, this book is still worth reading. This book is just right, not to long, but with enough information to please any reader wanting to know the true history of one of this countries most exciting times. The duty of any historian is a most difficult one, he must feed the reader, without over feeding him. He must give facts, without boring the reader. He must research deep and hard for the truth. Christopher Hill does all this and more, in his usual captivating way, when you have put this book down, you will be looking for more works by Christopher Hill.

With a general election just weeks away, oh how I wish that we had men and women of the likes of Jennie Lee and her husband Nye Bevan in the world today. This book should be made compulsory reading for ALL M.P's it could help them to keep the nose's out of the trough, and work for the good of the whole country, not just a few.

Having read a number of books about the Great Man, I would rate this as amongst the best. For anyone wishing to understand how one of our finest governments ( The Attlee government of 1945-51 ) pulled our country round following world war two ,this is a must If we compare todays politicians with the men and women of that era, we come to understand what pygmies they are.

With the hindsight of 100 years it would be easy to be critical of Wells and his thoughts in the early months of the first world war. However, the reader's should try to put themselves back into the year 1914, it is then that they will read words of wisdom, that some of our so called leaders of today could dwell upon. His thoughts on the arm's dealers are as true today as they were then, think of how we in the west armed the Taliban in the 80's and 90's. His views on the future of the Balkan states could have been a warning for 80 years in the future, plus his idea's for a future map of Europe make interesting reading.
Old Idea's, Old Thinking, are not always irrelevant to todays problems. Anyone with concerns about the future, could gain by perhaps, reading these words from the past

This must be one of the most enlightening books ever written about the first world war, or, indeed any war. Robert Graves tells his story in an honest and open narrative, from the point of view of an infantryman who was there. He tells it hard, he tells it true, read one page and you will cry, turn that page and you will laugh.
Perhaps some of our so called leaders in power today should be made to read this, instead of addressing our troops in gung-ho fashion, dressed in shirt sleeves trying to be one of the boys, when in truth, they would jump if a paper bag was burst behind them .
We need a copy in every 6th.form classroom
