4.0 out of 5 stars Unnerving but worth watching, 20 Mar 2013
This review is from: The Silence [DVD] (DVD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is based on a novel by Jan Costin Wagner who set the story in Finland, what is taken away from relocating to Germany is immaterial as this is a fine film which will satisfy any "Scandi" crime fan (I know technically Germany is not Scandinavia but I refer to Wallander and the atmosphere of The Killing.)

In a repeat of a murder 23 years previously a teenage girl is abducted while riding her bike, she is then raped and murdered in the exact same place. Amongst the detectives is Mittich who worked on the other murder as is about to retire. This may seem predictable stuff however we have the privilege of knowing who the killer is (not a spoiler it happens early on) so rather than spending the time wondering who its about the why and we get to experience the bleakness of those left behind in a film that absolutely crackles with menacing atmosphere.

If, like me, antivirus programmes tend to be much of a muchness then this does the business well. Easy to install this offers security although perhaps not enough if you enjoy using public wifi.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does Exactly What Is Needed, 21 Feb 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Although I got this some time ago it seemed appropriate to try it out over a dull and dark Scottish winter. I have to say that as someone who suffers from ME, where waking up and sleep itself is difficult enough this works fine. I don't use the radio and found the "beeps" enough but on a regular alarm clock there is nothing more depressing of a morning. The addition of this light has made all the difference, it acts the same as early morning light through the window even when it is pitch black outside.

The replaceable bulb, I hadn't realised some manufacturers don't make this which seems ridiculous considering the expense of the things. This one is a good idea, or perhaps wait until they bring out a DAB version if listening to the radio of a morning is your thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Read For Science Fans and Novices, 21 Feb 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Science may or may not be your poison however this is the kind of book you could imagine being written from a few episodes of QI, highly enjoyable, extremely informative and enlightening, this is full of treats. Indeed it is well titled as, like a magpie, Flynn has collected all sorts of shiny things and might just dispel the myths that science is not full of humour.

If science had been like this at school how many would have paid much more attention in class.

3.0 out of 5 stars A New Take On Crime Fiction, 21 Feb 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Ana Maria Galindez is a 21st century forensic investigator dealing with the fall out from the Spanish Civil War and in particular the actions in the 1950s of Comandante Guzman. This is a little explored time and interweaving three different eras into one story, an engrossing story at that and full of historical information. Some of the dialogue, especially during the earlier periods, might seem a little modern, as this is not a translation from a Spanish writer it is hard to confirm whether or not people of that time in Spain would use certain phrases and this might distract and jar from the story. Apart from that, although weighing in at a daunting 600 or so pages with a certain amount of violence, crime fiction fans will possibly enjoy a new direction and a new heroine in Galindez.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy Sewing Projects, 25 Jan 2013
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
For beginners or those looking for fun yet simple projects to do then this a wonderfully stylish book. That is not to say it is all style and no substance, with clear instructions and great tips. The photography gives this a very "on trend" feel.

As sewing craft books go this would be a good addition, prettily packaged and enjoyable to read, if you want something more complex however there are plenty of other books available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not Just For Cath Kidston Fans, 5 Dec 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I'm sure Cath Kidston is a well known enough name in the craft and design world to make this collection shoot up to the top of the wish list. This set brings all of her books together in a neat box decorated with typically Kidston flowers.

As someone who sews there are plenty in these books to keep anyone from beginner to expert quite happy. The instructions are clear and accurate, the free bag is quite fun although as I haven't made it yet I can't vouch for what the end product looks like! There are lots of projects to get busy with, both the small ones that will take a few hours and larger projects that need a bit more attention to detail. Each design also has enough scope to alter to own tastes once a bit of confidence is gained.

Sew starts off with some easy to follow cushion ideas before leading off to more sewing based designs.

Patch introduces, as the title suggests, patchwork with some attractive bag projects to get you going.

Stitch brings sewing and cross-stitch together.

There are so many things to do, each book (paperback) has enough ideas to keep you going for years to come and you'll never be stuck for a Christmas or birthday present again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Feed Your Handmade Addiction!, 5 Dec 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Before delving into the projects this book has a section of clear illustrations showing how to get started with crochet, some handy tips and need to know things that would be worth practising before setting off on an actual project if you haven't done any crochet before.

The author has separated the items into categories - Kitchen, Living Room, Bedroom, Bathroom, Children's Rooms, Out and About. There is a good variation between small and larger projects that could be completed depending on how long you can spend on them. It's not completely retro, there is an iPad case to make too!

There is a lot to keep the crochet hobby going for a long while, attractively packaged in a well designed book. I cannot speak for those who are more crochet experts but as a beginner it is very inspirational!

5.0 out of 5 stars Masterclass from the Masterchef, 5 Dec 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Cook books can fall into two categories: those which provide endless family recipes and those which provide inspiration. A book from Michel Roux would be expected to fall into the latter. Instead, despite recipes possibly perceived to be a little on the simple side (how to poach an egg, don't mock it, this is Michel Roux so listen up) there are plenty of interesting yet easy to follow recipes that should become firm favourites.

We particularly liked Escabeche (p.47) which was so yum it actually got children to eat up sardines no quibbles.

Beautifully illustrated with colour photographs of the recipes and guides on how to do things such a prepare scallops then this would be ideal for someone who enjoys cooking but needs a few tips and ideas.

Sections include - Breakfast & Brunch; Starters; Fish and Shellfish; Poultry, Meat and Game; Vegetables, Eggs and Cheese; Desserts; Baking; Party Food; Stocks and Sauces.

Plenty of good ideas to fill your menu plan, without a lot of fuss, from one of the best known French chefs in Britain!

5.0 out of 5 stars Defines "Modern Classic", 15 Nov 2012
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A well deserved title - modern classic as this book is an utter delight from beginning to end. Here all the themes are covered, life, death, tragedy. The narrator's expressive voice carries the reader through events. On the death of his lover, a woman the narrator has been having an affair with, he is faced with the consequences, the child asleep in the house, those she has left behind.

At times the prose is heavy yet worthwhile and satisfying completely by the end of the book when all is uncovered.
