4.0 out of 5 stars For Napoleon history was a set of lies agreed upon, by the powerful, 5 Feb 2014

For Napoleon history was a set of lies agreed upon, by the powerful. In `The Evil Empire' by Steven A Grasse all the woes of the old/new world can all be traced back to the remnant of the English Empire - England. Yes the modern world would be a much nicer place without the English claims the author who gives 101 eclectic examples to prove it. For instance: imagine North America without English colonisation, the destruction of its native population and wild life. Or imagine the world map without the divide and rule partition policy that followed English invasion from Ireland to India and beyond. The jousting style and accuracy of the book is criticised by many an Amazon reviewer. Nevertheless the underlying theme (with an introduction by English anarchist Penny Rimbaud) remains true - the evil of Empire and its subsequent airbrushing from orthodox history. Thus the reader is given pause to consider the historical and modern implications of Western lead empire.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not to be taken seriously, sober or at all, outside of a library copy., 1 Nov 2013

I honestly started to flag and lost interest having read the opening chapters of the 'Lord Lucan mystery.' The book is a theoretical account of Lord Lucan's unresolved disappearance following his murder of children's Nanny Sandra Rivet. Unfortunately the book fails to engage the reader or deliver any narrative meat to such a promising plot. The Lucan character reads like a poor relation to Harry Flashman, in George Macdonald Frasers incomparable series of the `Flashman' diaries. So my advice is simple. Save your money on this Lucan poltroon and read the far more amusing `Flashman diaries' instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars In 2013 the majority of the American public remain unconvinced by the conclusions of the official Warren commission report, 21 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In 2013 the majority of the American public remain unconvinced by the conclusions of the official Warren commission report on the JFK assassination and Ventura's book will effectively add fire to the conspiracy arguments. `They killed our president' by Jesse Ventura (with contributions) is a real page turner or `shifter' in the case of the Kindle, even for those tired of `JFK conspiracy' theories. I read the Kindle Fire edition with its full sources, footnotes and direct web connections to the text.
Jesse Ventures stylistic voice is always apparent in this direct, accessible and convincing read on the events surrounding the JFK assassination. In part one Ventura uses documented sources, materials and witness testimony throughout (with some unpublished new material) to sustain his main argument that the USA security services, mafia and Cuban exile forces and others conspired to assassinate JFK. Ventura in part two argues the official Warren Commission's report on the assassination was part of a media cover up that focused public attention on the theory of lone gunman assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. Furthermore the Warren Commission omitted or retro fitted evidence to prove its lone gunman case. Ventura in part three analyses the principal characters and their conspiracy in the cause, event and aftermath of the assassination. Ventura notes in conclusion how the full JFK story has yet to be written, not least due to the amount of withheld documentation concerning the events and its lead characters for reasons of ongoing `national security' - 50 years after the event!

Chomsky on Anarchism
Chomsky on Anarchism
by Noam Chomsky
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars You learn more from Chomsky than anyone else., 10 Aug 2013
This review is from: Chomsky on Anarchism (Paperback)
It's simple. You learn more from Noam Chomsky (by peer review the world's greatest living intellectual), than anyone else. Even Chomsky's arch critics (Hitchens, CIA etc) read him for illumination. In `Chomsky on Anarchism', Chomsky in eleven chapters gives his personal views and eclectic understanding of this increasingly relevant political movement. The usual Chomskian analytical brilliance, research and full references are on display so readers won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars ''The writing of history, Voltaire believed, should be one form of battle in the age-old war for our intellectual emancipation.", 2 April 2013

This review is from: History as Mystery (Paperback)
The following is taken from a review of Parent's `History as mystery' by Dan Brook of `Z magazine'. I found the chapter on the death (and possible poisoning) of the 12th President Zachary Taylor, especially informative. I recommend for further reading: `The Parenti Reader.'
"The writing of history, Voltaire believed, should be one form of battle in the age-old war for our intellectual emancipation." This eloquent and persuasive book is for anyone interested in history, of course, but also for those with an interest in sociology, politics, psychology, pedagogy, media criticism, and the on-going culture wars. Parenti seeks to "deconstruct some of the filters, to show that much of mainstream history we are commonly taught, the popular version of events that enjoys maximum circulation, is seriously distorted in ways that serve or certainly reflect dominant socio-economic interests". Parenti's content is without doubt vital, while his style makes history--whether "ruling-class", "people's", or "real"--come alive! Voltaire would be proud and readers will be grateful for Parenti's unraveling of the mystery of history.''

5.0 out of 5 stars Bill Murrays best movie to date, 5 Jan 2013
Lost in Translation is arguably Bill Murray's best movie to date and has the most memorable start ever! BM is sublime as the jaded middle aged American film star on assignment abroad; in a role he was born to play. Scarlett Johansson is equally convincing as the sensitive and lonely newlywed whose chance meeting with Murray in Tokyo morphs into an unlikely search for love and life's meaning. Old and new Japan as experienced by both outsiders, its glitz and tradition, holds an increasingly beguiling fascination that becomes an intriguing movie theme in itself. The Zen like soundtrack: an eclectic mix of western and oriental song and sound simply magnifies the disjuncture banalty and beauty of modern urban Japan. Without doubt repeat viewing of LIT is a pleasure. The DVD I bought (in China) has the soundtrack as an extra.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 star entertainment, 26 July 2012
I first saw `Where Eagles Dare' on release and from the opening credits; the movie had a powerful cinematic effect. W.E.D is based on Alistair MacLean's novel of the same name. The novel casting of Burton and Eastwood as lead characters in a clandestine mission deep in German territory, combined with stunning alpine scenery and a memorable musical score, remains compulsive viewing for the World War 2 action fan. W.E.D was Warner Brother's biggest grossing film of the year for good reason and is pure 5 star entertainment.

1.0 out of 5 stars I can't comment on the radio as advertised, 2 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I ordered the advertised radio and received instead a Lloytron `Aztec' analogue radio. The `Aztec' is a small cheery rotund radio, of lower spec and value than the radio ordered. I haven't returned it and incidentally the volume was declared `good' by my mother. As I can't comment on the radio as advertised it gets one star.
