5.0 out of 5 stars Great but no Tamara, 7 April 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was there for this perfomance and can be seen on the DVD. I also saw Tamara Rojo in the same production Miyako Yoshida is getting rather old (as we all are) and she never reaches the youthful beauty and stunning emotion expressed by Tamara! What a shame the recording was not that of the Tamara performance. However a great performance filling in a long awaited gap!

5.0 out of 5 stars Floods of tears MacMillian and Massenet, 4 Mar. 2010

Could not wait for the bluray. I just break out in floods of tears when I watch this so words such as fantastic do not do this proper justice! NO PROBLEM Amazon sent me region 0
The discussion with Monica Tamara and Carlos was very moving particularly when Tamara said she used to rush to see her favourite dancer from Cuba perform when she was a young girl! Tamara and Carlos wished they could have met Kenneth MacMillian but had this occurred Kenneth would have asked for Jules Massenet to be present for nobody else could have tinkered with his scores so effectively without being totally besotted by this somewhat underrated composer. Furthermore the roots go deeper as the first few bars are from La Verge first performed at the Palais Garnier home of the Paris ballet and a wonderful ballet from Le Roi De Lahore. Where the loveliest theme from the bedroom scene comes from I have yet to identify but it is of pure sunshine. What they said about the darker side of MacMillians ballets make Massenet and MacMillian kindred spirits.- Mayerling's choreography and Massenet's extreme passionate and lyrical expression in Werther make Mayerling and Werther as close as Manon the opera and Manon the ballet.
When you go to Paris take the Metro to Jardin du Luxembourg. Pay homage at the Massenet Memorial. A truly emotive experience as one metre in front stands a lonely figure of Manon . You may cast a tear or drop flowers but think of the lovely dancers and singers that are our most precious Manons. Tamara you are one of these!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Superlative!, 2 Mar. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The Royal Ballet are producing DVDs that set the highest standards against which everything else will be compared in the 21st century. Manon has just come out to compliment this great MacMillian ballet. Words aren't good enough - this grips the emotions and brings one to tears! I have seen this four times live at Covent Garden it is unique to its historical period, addictive sensuous with choreography which is second to none. Recording artistically and technically perfect. Do not hesitate - buy it!
After watching Massenet/ Macmillan's Manon I see MacMillian's Mayerling and Massenet' Werther as having both unrivalled underlying expression and lyricism one in ballet the other in opera. Both works are fanatical with the extremes of expression resulting in the inevitable outcome, suicide

5.0 out of 5 stars A TOTAL WINNER SO LOVELY!!, 7 Jan. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Winter Dreams [DVD] [2011] (DVD)
DVD arrived today, most of UK in snow so this was an appropriate time! MacMillian's ballet lies between La Dame aux Camelias, Aniuta and Mayerling in an atmosphere of rural Russia, snow and beautiful women. Based on Chekov accompanied by traditional Russian music and pieces by Tchaikovsky it is beautiful in every way. It's not too dark as the other reviewer states. A total winner! THER SHOULD BE NO REVIEWS LESS THAN """""

5.0 out of 5 stars Leanne Benjiman we love you!, 5 Jan. 2010

saw the same cast perform at Covent Garden 2009. I also saw four Stravinsky Ballets that year. This is Stravinsky's best work so beautiful that it had me in tears. i will always remember that haunting music interlude before the last scene. The whole of Covent garden is tranfixed. Leanne you are the magical Firebird and always will be. We love you!

WHEN WILL PRODUCERS REALISE THAT SETTING IN THE WRONG ERA IS JUST A GIMMICK. ATTITUDES CAHANGE WITH TIME AND IT IS TOTALLY INAPROPRIATE TO SET THIS IN MODERN TIMES - RETURNED BY RETURN POST! DO NOT ENCOURAGE THIS PRACTICE

3.0 out of 5 stars Distractions Wrong period setting, 23 Nov. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
At the beginning the singer seems more intent on messing about with a pair of boots - This goes on for too long. I do not like operas that are set in a period after the composer is long dead. The genuine period is always best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning Genius - Also available region free, 21 Nov. 2009

I was there in the stalls when this was recorded - so lucky!. Tamara Rojo (pronounced Rocco) is always great but in this performance she must have well out performed anyone who has ever danced this role both in technical ability and expression. A Shakespere plot, a leading Soviet composer, a leading conductor, a world class orchestra, magnificent settings, preiod costumes, the most powerful cast, superlative sound and visual recording, first class camera work, faultless editing. MacMillan, of course, was the extreme genius of choreography of the 20th century! Not forgetting the genius behind the Royal Ballet - Monica Mason who selects and trains her magnificent team.
Right from the moment she dances on as a young playful girl, then falls in love, then kills herself in a tragic end, Tamara grabs your heart continuously. A recording of Shakesperian proportion! He would approve and express his admiration better than I can. For me SIMPLY THE GREATEST!!! ********* stars. Tamara outshines all others. No other Juilet, danced or acted, matches her.
